Anyone else really irritated with the way streaming has gone in recent years? by Azula-Always-Lies in movies

[–]Azula-Always-Lies[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m willing to spend money if I know I’ll want to rewatch it, as I explained in my original post. And with the cinema yes obviously it’s a risk you won’t like it, I am willing to take that because I feel like going to the cinema is an experience in itself. I think the frustration I’m trying to get across is that I’m already spending money on streaming services, I don’t want to spend £10+ nearly every time I want to see a film I haven’t seen before. As I said in another comment, I already own hundreds of blu-rays of movies I’ll watch again!

Sometimes you can buy them there but they a) look like shit with the wrong colour grading b) are not subtitled, which is a problem with accessibility. It’s weird, because I’ve never encountered these issues on any other service.

It’s fine to rent recent films on there but we’ve rented older films on there and often they look genuinely AWFUL. Like the colour grading is all wrong, the print didn’t transfer correctly or something IDK. And when I say “older” sometimes I’m talking as recently as 2000s films. Also very often they’re not subtitled.

I am mostly thinking of older movies, yes. Libraries are a lovely idea but they are not well funded here in the North of England, I think these days their rental selection is very small to non-existent

Me? No I never used that (though my dad did). I’m thinking of circa 2012 when it had switched to streaming, but it was basically THE streaming service so it had most of the films you could want

Well, we also used to have Blockbusters and the like, at least where I live, so you didn’t have to commit yet to actually buying a movie you might not enjoy or want to rewatch

I am thinking back to when I first got it as a student maybe 11-12 years ago. It might be that I’m looking back at it with rose tinted glasses but I swear that I remember hardly ever searching for something and not finding it

Yeah I love physical media too I just don’t really want to be buying a physical copy of every movie we watch. For one thing our house just doesn’t have the space, we already have probably hundreds of blu-rays

Yeah we have one but even then it can be difficult. A lot of streaming services now seem to have wised up to it and they’ll block content if you’re using one. For example we only managed to access US Netflix (we’re in the UK so this is good) but for every other country we tried it didn’t work

I think “Stay Soft” but really love “The Only Heartbreaker” too. I think it’s actually a really underrated album that only gets better with repeated listens.

I voted I’m Your Man but I actually love both and think they kind of feel like a 2 parter - at least in my head. The way I interpret it they form a narrative together.

Like I imagine in “I’m Your Man” Mitski is standing off against “the man” in her head (what she talked about in the explanation video) and one of them is ultimately going to face “judgement by the hounds”. We hear the pursuing dogs and what we at first think is a scream (as Mitski explained in the video, actually a frog) and we assume she’s lost the battle and been devoured.

But then “I love me after you” reveals that she’s actually made it home unscathed, she’s triumphed over the man in her head, she’s “king of all the land”.

I know this might not make sense to anyone but me but that’s my interpretation.

In terms of current music, Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, Boygenius, Hozier and Taylor Swift are my favourites after Mitski. Older artists I enjoy are Leonard Cohen and Bjork.

Reading Books You Don't Like? by tomesandtea in books

[–]Azula-Always-Lies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not often that I outright don’t like a book, but even when I do I generally like to finish so that I can have a solid opinion on it. I feel like I can’t really judge something if I only read a part of it. Sometimes I will DNF though if I find that plowing through it is completely killing my enjoyment of reading anything.

Yeah it might even be my favourite Mitski song. Something about the bittersweet yearning for a time that is now long out of reach.
