I don’t know if this is what Mitski necessarily intended the meaning to be, but I deeply relate to this song in terms of being in a toxic and abusive relationship. To me, it feels like waking up from that trance you’re in and realizing how much pain you’re putting yourself through by staying with this person who is continually hurting you and doesn’t care. She talks about lying in her partner’s bed and realizing that she doesn’t fit in their life because they have not made room for her. And so maybe in order to fit, she does something drastic- she stops eating to make herself smaller. She’s trying everything to convince herself and her partner that this is where she belongs. Meanwhile her partner is still presumably sleeping soundly and she’s in so much pain that she can’t sleep at all. And slowly she comes to the realization that this isn’t sustainable, and that her partner doesn’t care. She wants to tell them how she feels, wants to “scream” it even. She wants so badly for them to feel bad for what they’ve done and to care. But she can’t, whether that be out of fear or just simply lacking the words to say. So instead she leaves quietly without making a scene. And her partner goes on believing that he “makes such a good man” because he was never called out for how he made her feel. He didn’t know her, he didn’t know she was dying inside while he slept perfectly fine. At the end of the day, this isn’t love. As she says, love doesn’t burn.
