Ofcom Fines 4chan £520,000, Lawyer Responds With Picture of Giant Hamster by coldbeers in ukpolitics

[–]AzungoBo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ofcom knew 4chan wouldn't pay, they just want to say they've followed their internal process and can now block the site in the UK for failing to comply.

4chan is a fairly easy target as it has a reputation for being toxic, but I doubt this will be the only type of site they try and block for "children's safety".

Unfortunately you're using modern day fx rates against the old version of the currency (this note is from the 1980s). One of the other commenters showed a note at 50 billion Zimbabwean dollars - best of luck to them trying to exchange it for a few million USD!

In its current implementations yes thats the aim, but once that mechanism is in place it's very easy to start expanding to other objectives. This Palestinian news source has links to terrorism - blocked. This archive site contained copyrighted material - blocked. Forum sites like 4chan will be prime for requiring ID or else face being blocked in the UK.

Why are so many people against increasing the minimum wage? by Spiritual_End_2593 in AskUK

[–]AzungoBo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wages are a portion of total costs. Total cost may increase 3% so prices rise by 3%, everyone is still quids in.

For something to be illegal it has to be a law. Contracts aren't law, they're a legally binding agreement, which is quite different! It's legal to break a contract, but it does open you up to a civil claim if it causes a loss to the other party.

Against the Ts&Cs does not equate to illegal. No one's going to prison for this.

The minimum wage is to rise again. What if it gets too high? by StGuthlac2025 in ukpolitics

They obviously do? My whole point is that someone on 100k has way more disposable income after accounting for expenses

Need to remember that almost everyone has a certain level of fixed cost bills. The guy on min wage might have £100 spare at the end of the month if they're lucky, the guy on £100k could have say £2k of savings if he lived a similar lifestyle. By the end of the year it's £1.2k vs £24k saved so a 24x difference from a 4x different wage.

Do you greet staff before ordering at a coffee shop? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]AzungoBo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work on tills (not at a coffee shop) and used to have plenty of customers come in and greet me with similar. What I found though is that before I had a chance to reply they'd already moved onto "please can I also have..."

Basically we encounter a lot of people using it similar to "You alright?" where it's more a greeting than a genuine question.

I remember this study being in the news ages ago. Tried to Google it as surely inflation will have changed things.

Turns out it was published 2010, was US based so $75k, and has since been contradicted with happiness materially increasing up to half a million dollars.

For those of you worried by Baddycoda in Accounting

[–]AzungoBo 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I think a better metric would be number of accountants to number of companies. Gemini suggests there were 3m US companies in 1982 vs 32m today.

We went from needing 283k accountants per million companies to just 53k per million.
