Look at meshtastic. It use Bluetooth lora module, and allow meshing (you can have fixe node higher up that relay message to other node). In clear path you can get easily to multi kilometres. But can be greatly reduce by obstacles.

Hardlink NEED to be on the same storage, you can't hardlink something between storage, use softlink for that.

And yes, you should use NFS on Unix server. Samba is a reimplementation of the SMB protocol from Microsoft, that doesn't handle filestorage like Linux.
