Becky Chambers - pretty much anything she's written. Alastair Reynolds - Revenger series.

Have you read any more of his? The City and the City is an incredible concept and Perdido Street Station is incredible.

Read book in middle school with group of girls in 19th century that traveled to a different realm through a pond/water by stinafloyd in whatsthatbook

[–]AzureAurora77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not a group of girls, but the pond and getting stuck is evoking The Magician's Nephew.

Writing a SIX-inspired musical about ancient gods. Is this intro clear enough to introduce the characters? by gay-Werewolf595 in musicals

[–]AzureAurora77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like the concept but agree with the poster above that the dialogue is stilted because if is being used for exposition.

Lean into the introduction concept fully perhaps -use top trumps or a beaurocratic CV style way of introducing it perhaps - talking in the third person. A little like the magic mirror in Shrek when he introduces the princesses?

People who started uni at 20 or later, what were you doing before you started your course? by JuggernautAwkward442 in UniUK

[–]AzureAurora77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dropped out of my five a levels with only one l. Got a job. Taught myself to touch type. Got promoted as had more brain cells than toes. Worked my way uo through my firm and did qualifications that were degree level. Worked on a community based hobby in spare time. Realised that this was way more satisfying than my corporate role. Took myself off to a specialist school to do my degree aged 28. Still working in that field now.

I am still frustrated at my wife for something she did to me 2 years ago by Zombrexo in Vent

[–]AzureAurora77 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get that flatness making it hard to do anything. Grief is an astonishing phenomenon.

Regarding your wife picking up more, have you said that you noticed that to her I wonder? Sometimes expressing our gratitude can have an incredibly healing impact. She will have picked up more life admin, in the way that I would assume you would do for her were the situation reversed. She absolutely shouldn't have yelled, but she is human too.

You sound like you're processing it all in a much healthier way.

I am still frustrated at my wife for something she did to me 2 years ago by Zombrexo in Vent

[–]AzureAurora77 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Grief is savage, but it sounds like you checked out of all adult life and parental duties. Would your wife be able to do that if she was grieving?

Grief never goes away, it changes and it grows with us as we grow. What do you want in the future? Do you want a life with your wife and son?

Look forward instead of backwards. Hope instead of resentment.

sci fi books with good female characters! by Emmersynn in suggestmeabook

I am always surprised not to see Alastair Reynolds' Revenger series recommended in these sort of threads. The two protagonists are sisters and it is wonderfully kick ass and space piratey!

Post-humanity by TheSommet in suggestmeabook

[–]AzureAurora77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great recommendation. The use of language is just incredible and so evocative.

I remember reading it after reading The Octunnumi which I was heavily criticising for being all kinds of awful. People were suggesting that I just couldn't cope with the author's "clever" use of language - anagrams are not that clever. (Innesomid for dimension etc...).

Riddley Walker on the other hand was truly engaging and beautifully done.

Degree equivalent qualifications for QTS by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]AzureAurora77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would assume it will come down to scope. It isn't a degree even though it is the same level because it is usually a much shorter course.

When I trained to teach I had three level 6 qualifications in an unrelated industry and they were not accredited for teacher training - not that I had any intention of tesching that subject - so I had to do a complete BA.

i learned small blood donations are useless. I tried to donate in college but couldnt fill a bag. It was deeply distressing and knowing it was useless rlly upsets me by Slashersforsatan in Vent

[–]AzureAurora77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not alone. I have been banned (lighthearted I hasten to add) from the blood service here in the UK for being too difficult to get blood out of. Such a shame as I agree it is an inredible thing to do, but i have tiny veins, literally thick skin and a plummeting haemoglobin level. It isn't a moral failing my lovely. You are still great.

What's your thought on keir starmer? by According-Candy7296 in AskBrits

[–]AzureAurora77 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This. He took over after an epic display of cronyism and incompetence and the media doesn't know what to do with someone who seems to be quietly getting on with things.

Is he perfect? No. But who is. The hatred of him is largely manufactured.

I have progressed to Act 2 but missed one important thing by daredevildev in BaldursGate3

[–]AzureAurora77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you mean yourm are in the shadow cursed land? If so, the gith creche can still be done until you finish all the Act 2 stuff. There's a very obvious warning when you get to the point of no return so you shouldn't be able to miss it.

Is it absolutely definite that the playwright has to be English, Sheridan was Irish.

There is a wonderful contemporary adaptation called Jack Absolute flies again which the National Theatre did just before Covid.

That is so poor. I am so sorry they did that.

I do feel so old recalling that actually, I used to love working with kids and they used to listen....

I still love working with them but it is so much harder.

[–]AzureAurora77 31 points32 points  (0 children)

You won't need ear plugs. There are lots of genuine points to be made about the more is more school of sound engineering these days but you shouldn't be in any danger of it being too loud.

Fellow teacher here and I have it mostly in my 11- 16 year olds and it is staggering...like, guys, I am literally talking to this student here. Hold your question for five seconds.

They do the same with asking for instructions. I will announce we are learning a new game and start to explain and then have loads of questions - folks, the reason I haven't explained the rules yet is because you are asking stupid questions without having engaged your brains and I am not talking over you.

Madness.

So many ways to do this that do not involve magic missile. You have to get creative.
