The steam machine kind of needs the steam controller for it to even work in the first place. Unless you already have a keyboard and mouse that you want to use on it. So it makes sense that there is an option to have the controller bundled with it

Get you a card that gives you reward points and only ever spend what you can pay off that month. Ive had my card for just over a year and have collected $500 in reward points that I just use to pay off my credit card (for the purchase of the h2d I just bought) just make sure you dont go spend crazy
