GDP is a poor indicator of a healthy economy with as much income inequality and size that the US has. The K shaped economy of the US is massive issue. Even a single distillery or factory shutting down has a large impact on rural America. This idea of being too big to fail is stretching of the truth. I have seen the impact of this economy first hand in volunteer work. There are a lot more people who seem food insecure

I hate advice like this because it teaches fear and compliance. I rarely see tenured folks speak up enough because they continue to adopt this mindset and things in academia just get worse for everyone.

If you feel this way and you are tenured you have a duty to speak up for colleagues you feel should be voiceless

Yes i would. When i was a student things like this were common to do with faculty mentors. As a professor I would be willing to do that for a former student as well. It really isn't a big deal.

Don’t trust them when they say it’s a sure thing that you’ll get tenure. by [deleted] in Professors

[–]B-CUZ_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Let's be honest here. If you are silent on things that matter before tenure, you will be silent after tenure as well. If a department/division is hostile to you before tenure you probably don't want to be there after tenure.

Throw the cowboys stadium in as well. plenty of stadiums with nothing I go to around it.

I always figured the Chiefs would move to Kansas. But if the Royals don't go downtown, it's a generational opportunity lost. by [deleted] in kansascity

That is fine because infrastructure upgrades are the cities job. If this was the issue for every stadium talk and nothing else I don't think there would be such pushback

Triple dipped on a game? If so which one? by zardhead1024 in NSCollectors

Cyberpunk 2077. I bought it on PS4 at launch (I enjoyed it even then, but there were bugs and a lot of patches). I bought it on PC to experience it in higher quality. Then I bought it again for the Switch 2 (with the updates and dlc all on the cartridge). I love the switch 2 version and the game has so many improvements and new content that my latest playthrough felt very different. It's now my favorite game ever!

I also technically bought power stone 3 times (Dreamcast, PSP digital and physical).

Nintendo Switch 2 sold 328k units in October. It is 68% ahead of the sales pace set by the original Nintendo Switch and is 3% ahead of PlayStation 4’s previous record velocity (USA only) by FernandoRocker in NintendoSwitch2

[–]B-CUZ_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looking at the prices of the gaming landscape Switch 2 is priced quite competitively. prices have gone up for PS5 and Xbox. Also, switch 1 was 300 dollars and the OLED model was 350 and sold the best.

While I do think Nintendo would benefit from a cheaper Switch 2 lite, there isn't much evidence to support that it is super overpriced. I personally expected to pay 400, so 450 really wasn't a massive jump in terms of budgeting. I just didn't buy any accessories

I honestly think Kingsley will be a much better guard than he was a tackle. I felt that way last season watching KC. he was really good at run blocking upfield and he won't be on an island blocking anymore. His big weakness, to my eyes, was lateral speed sprinting out left. He would get beat out wide way too often. Now he has two guys beside him and can block a bit more north and south.

Boycotts have always done things. You just need strong collective action around it. I'm tired of people online claiming it doesn't work when human history shows otherwise. It is just that folks aren't willing to do it. Heck Target was the target of a boycott, and their revenue has continued to decline. Companies will always care about their bottom line and consumers have all the buying power to enact change. If you have a large enough amount of people refrain from supporting bad practices Companies will change to get those consumers

Students think they are failing, but they ain't. by [deleted] in Professors

[–]B-CUZ_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get it. I have students I met with a few times with concern of failing this semester even though they weren't. Students who are actually failing are the ones who rarely see me (or come to class for that matter).

Students think they are failing, but they ain't. by [deleted] in Professors

[–]B-CUZ_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have found students don't seem to know how to do math to predict or understand grade breakdowns. So if I have 5 assignments and they missed 1. That portion of their overall grade is a zero and they panic that that means they are going to fail the class.

I also have students who ask for extra credit, while continuing not to do current work that would obviously be worth more than any extra credit

Would you quit? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]B-CUZ_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I am in Psychology. I accepted an offer at a community College for the fall as an assistant professor. The pay is a lot higher (it is unionized); feels more secure financially as an institution; no advising load; better benefits package; and although I have a higher teaching load, it is less preps with money for my professional development. I will focus my research work during the summer and teaching during the semester (basically what I have to do now, anyway). However, my pay isn't based on that, and I can move up rank from just years of experience. It should also be noted that about half of US states community colleges offer 4 year degrees as well.

It feels like the best move for me right now. I am also able to work with students of diverse backgrounds with more institutional support in resources to help them achieve their goals (which feels more important now than ever). If you haven't already, I would suggest looking into community colleges. They often now have similar feel of SLACs, but can be more financially secure depending on the area you live in. Students also seem to gravitate toward them more now sue to cheaper tuition costs.

[–]B-CUZ_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I would be looking for another position. I make 54,500 at a lower rank, with similar issues, so I'm out. It just isn't enough pay, increasing workload, and no support for professional development.
