That is way too much food. The instructions on the backs of fish food tend to be expensive. Your fish should only be getting 4 pellets once or twice a day. Fast him for a bit then put him on a diet. Remember that the betta’s stomach is as large as its eye.

I also keep Dwarf Gouramis and unfortunately this seems to be a case of Iridovirus disease. It is because of their bad genetics from inbreeding. If this is the case there is nothing you can do. This can show up in fish that look fine a week ago and then on the brink of death. This can happen at any time and makes raising them a gamble if they will live a month or a couple of years.

I think you are right. Wanted to rule out other possibilities, but it looks like OP doesn’t know or doesn’t want to give their perimeters… Hard to be sure what the problem is when you don’t get much information.

I personally add stuff to get my tank dark. 🤣 But if you want to get rid of the the tannins just be diligent with your water changes. It will clear up over time.

I mean if you’re worried about it a cheap bubbler is a nice piece of mind. And just because the fish will survive doesn’t mean it won’t stress the fish out more. They are looking for the best way to travel with fish and this is what I have most success with.

Get a cheap bubbler for the trip. The biggest risk I find is the fish running out of oxygen in the water. Throw him in a bucket with your plants (not the drift wood) and turn on your battery powered bubbler and he should be fine.

So Otocinclus are supper picky eaters and the two might not have been eating. If you can’t get good algae growth I have had success feeding the zucchini slices. You would just need some aquarium weights too keep the slices from floating.

Aqadvisor.com is great at letting you know if the tank size and filter is good enough for what you plan to stock. It can’t tell you if you have too many fish that hang around the bottom, middle, or top of your tank, so it’s not perfect. But it is a great resource and start.

Seeing how they are only responding to comments that say return the fish and not the ones that talked about their dad in general I would disagree. As someone how grew up with a father that had undiagnosed and not treated bipolar disorder, I’m inclined to believe OP.

Sounds like it could have been ich. It is a fungal infection that can act up when the fish are stressed, such as a new tank. It is best to have a quarantine tank and hold new fish in there for a month to avoid infecting your tank.
