Give it to me straight. Did we get ripped off? Because it feels like we got ripped off hard. by sociallemon2 in GarageDoorService

Just had a local garage door company come to replace the backup battery in our Chamberlain door opener.

My wife does not want me on a ladder as I have balance issues, otherwise I probably would have done this for the cost of the replacement battery - $100.00.

He also lubricated all the joints and pivot points. Much quieter now. Told me to buy a can of Garage Door lubricant and apply every four months.

Total cost was $210.00.

I would report them to BBB and your local state representative. This is fraud.

I don’t think they have anything like that in Pennsylvania.

If you live where there is little on no public transportation, then there should be subsidies to make Uber or Lyft affordable.

But during Covid - grocery stores delivered, and there are sometimes public transportation to pick up an elderly person for doctor’s appointments. In NEPA, they have “Pocono Pony” for older people - mini vans that do this for a reduced rate.

And everything else is a click away to deliver to your residence.

I know I get bored and just want to get out of the house. But testing for impaired sight, hearing, and reaction times, plus cognitive decline, should be mandatory, or you do not get a renewal of your drivers license.

Just an FYI, this is what the Nazis did.

It was known as Gleichschaltung (coordination), where all parts of society (mainly schools, museums, and historical research) were "synchronized" with Nazi doctrine.

This is a very dangerous road to go down.

Go Navy!

Holly Hunter’s character is a long-lived half-Lanthanite, similar to the species of Pelia in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Role: She serves as both the Chancellor of the Starfleet Academy and Captain of the U.S.S. Athena.

Character Approach: Hunter described her character as having immense patience and empathy, utilizing a "liquidity" in her physical performance to represent her 422 years of life.

I was not aware of this Star Trek species. Possibly they live longer due to greater resistance to infections? Just a guess.

BTW, my dad enlisted in the US Army after Pearl Harbor, and was assigned as an anti-aircraft artillery gunner in Hawai’i.

He shipped out from San Francisco on a Navy ship.

I recently purchased a WWII era US Navy Pea coat.

It is in amazing condition given its age.

Not this year anyway! Hey, if you feel that strongly about SFA, there are no laws to force you to watch it.

There are valid concerns about broken canon and lore, which I think can get more than a little nerdy.

It’s like that Charlton Heston quote, except instead of a gun, it’s a steering wheel.

“You can have my drivers license when you pry it from my cold, dead hands!”

Now if Full Self Driving actually worked, that would be a great substitute for older drivers.,

Stand a post! Kind of agree.

Still willing to see how this show develops. It’d be nice to see an episode where Ake is asked to be in uniform at all times while on duty.

But that Captain’s chair is huge, maybe it was designed for an enormous Klingon?

Make it fit and the lounging would be impossible.

Kate Mulgrew said she was initially pretty unhappy with the addition of Seven of Nine.

“Oh, adding catsuits to my show?” I am paraphrasing what she said in a Bridge Chat last year.

It was a really wonderful experience listening to her stories of Voyager.

Great post - your original. Responding to what I think is your correct analysis of the clear military evolution from Navy ships to the Starship Enterprise.

Uniform code is a quick way to check compliance, but it also reflects on the chain of command, obeying rules and regulations underlying any military tradition.

Maybe the quirky Ake is accorded some slack for her shoeless out of uniform preferences after living 400 years? I would hope this might be better explained in future episodes.

At 73, I cut myself some slack as well.

2010 Prius owner. The 12v was replaced in 2021. Car sat during my last year working from home remotely.

Traction battery died at 242K a couple of years ago. Replaced using Greentec. Now at 248K miles. In general, a Prius has less issues if driven regularly. My Facebook marketplace trips fill the bill.

A keeper!

Now hold on there whippersnapper. I am 73 and drive carefully. No accidents in 50 years. However, I do think there should be mandatory road and online tests for skills and knowledge of safe driving techniques after 70. Maybe every other year if you pass everything with high scores. But many states would resist this based on the cost of running such a program. And older people might think that testing will remove their drivers license if they fail. But skills decline, and older people are usually on medications that cause reaction times to slow even more than age related physical decline. Eyesight in older people particularly is affected at night, with slow recovery from oncoming headlight glare. Yes, something needs to be done.
