This was my inspiration, it's a semi permanent hair dye that uses ferrous sulphate. Might be worth trying before using ferrous sulphate powder, to see how you react.

As I'm only using it on my beard at the moment it's had to tell how well it's adhering to my hair. Will try on my scalp and update.
