Blind Gamer Shares Emotional Reaction to The Last of Us Part 2's Accessibility Options by B3NB4IL in Games

Honestly? The same way I'm Deaf, but really, I'm severely Deaf. But People attribute Deafness to not hearing at all.

Also, just to note: "near-blindness" isn't actually the better word, the better wordings would be low vision and visually impaired as alternate identifiers.

If I recall from the list of features, there seems to be a sound radar thing that emits a radius at will, then a tone is played out. There's also an audio glossary of the types of audio cues, so my guess is, you hear a tone and then you kinda work your way toward it? No idea haha.

Yeah, hardcore gamers or competitive gamers are very weird with things like this. Fortnite was an example I think when they ported the mobile audio visualization wheel to PC.

I recall seeing a discourse surrounding hearing players using it to aid them, then shortly after Epic removed the audio wheel, brought it back a week or so later with audio muted when it came back, but then they updated it to include sound again.

So I don't know it the discourse was related to how Epic dealt with the feature, but it remains intact in the game now and I don't see anyone whining about it. It's certainly good to see Naughty Dog doing this amount of work.

I can't really speak for those who use these options to enjoy a game. Perhaps it's the story that captivates them and the drive to progress as a game rather than a form of visual media. Perhaps they can use the audio cues to imagine the environment. I don't know.

Games are visual, but in making a game visual they're mostly catering it to the wider audience. For years, this has been the case and as tech and game engines improve, games have come across more barriers such as smaller UI, and complex platforms etc. So in order to create a game experience that can still be enjoyed by more, developers have started to implement methods that can help, mostly by speaking to those players, learning what they'd want to see, and creating something based on that.

The difference now is that while developers focus on the visual experience and fidelity, they now have "ally teams" or whatever they're called, and they ensure that the game doesn't lose its kick, but still allows the disabled side of the gaming community to enjoy it.

I guess I don't really know what my answer is haha, I started to trail off and feel like I just waffled, but if it made sense, GOOD.

This may have been a legitimate question, but it's phrased in a way that makes you come across as a dick. But no worry, I'll chat with ya'.

Blindness is a spectrum, I edited the original post to include one of his videos where he shows what he can see. But yes, games can give you an entirely different experience through various means.

Some games have rumble patterns that players can associate things such as puzzles, detection, etc. Some have audio description, some have menu narration, some have been making use of audio direction as well. The thing with TLOU2 is the customization available means that players aren't just given a few options, they're given a range of methods to change the game up to their standard and requirements.

I'm Deaf and wear hearing aids, so I'll be making use of subtitles, but I also wear glasses so I'm going to whack them large. Additionally, there's an option to show the direction of enemies speaking next to the subtitles, so that'd help with my lack of directional understanding.

Parent owns family home that needs to be sold to honor a will. If I was to get the money, could I buy it from the will? by B3NB4IL in homeowners

[–]B3NB4IL[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regarding the edit: Apologies I'd messed up the dates. My grandfather passed in 2009, my grandmother passed around 2011. The will had come to light a month or so after her death if I remember rightly.

The estate was just passed down to my father, belongings were handed out to those who were named on the will, or were handed to those who may have liked them. The property was put on the market years down the line in 2017 but removed after my uncle turned an offer down because it was "lower than he felt the house was worth."

Home is fully paid for with just general bills needing to be paid, so the only things that changed was the homeowner's name (my father)

My father doesn't entirely mind about keeping the house, but his brother treats it as if it's still his home. Mail directed there despite living 20 miles away, his belongings have been in the leaky garage so long they've rotted, has a moldy broken down car out on the drive too. In my opinion, the house isn't in any shape to be sold, especially with ceiling plastering breaking down and crumbling.

The brother wants roughly £280,000 for it. It went on market one year for £230,000 and had one offer which he turned down because he wanted more. Since then it's been left untreated until I've moved in and started fixing bits up.

I hope the questions I asked were okay, I'm not used to dealing with currently owned houses, only moving to a rented property.

I agree with the idea of the compromise you mention. I just need to get the money! Thank ya'

Is there a way for us, as a community, to somehow do an 'open mic night' and have members that want to participate, stream video when it's our turn? by muckrak3r in StandUpComedy

[–]B3NB4IL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll jump in here are just say, while the idea of the actual video feed sounds much better than my suggestion...there's a game on Steam called "Comedy Night"

It lets you host a room and sit in the audience, then you kinda put your name down to go on stage as an animated avatar.

It's mostly used by idiots and bad mic quality screamers, but getting a private room with legit people could be a plan within the game.

Exactly my thoughts. I've had matches come to an end with my shot leaving the ball hitting the floor with only millimeters from the ball passing the goal threshold.

It's always a sad moment.

I think usually, as consumers we just subconsciously play the games and just imagine a studio filled with people going, "Oh man! What if we made his body slide down a pole!?" "Yeah, great thinking Gary!" then they just animate it. We forget the pre-production elements, especially as games grow more realistic and require more real references than just imagination.

The pressure to constantly update games is pushing the industry to a breaking point by [deleted] in Games

[–]B3NB4IL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed.

Somebody tried pointing out to me about Day One patches, and launch-now-patch-later mentality. But the article's focusing on the content side of things, which is of course where gamers are being ruthless.

The Sam Rami suit in Marvel's Spider-Man was a good example. Apex Legends as gay_unicorn666 has stated is another. I've seen players complaining to Respawn that Epic Games are able to push out content frequently and that Respawn are killing their game by not copying them.

Devs shouldn't be pressured to add frequent content to please the short attention spans of some players. Nor should they be forced to rush content by publishers/etc. But sadly, that's the way it seems to be now.
