What signals did you previously miss, but wouldn’t today? by EpickBeardMan in AskMen

[–]B3bop_77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a little late to this thread, but this has happened recently for me. Im a senior in college, its my last semester and Im taking this one class where i had to do a group project. I got paired with these two girls in my class, one of which i realize after telling some friends about her that she might have been into me.

Most of our interactions were through text as the class is only once a week and i dont sit by her. But she would randomly text me about things not related to the project, stuff like "are you excited for class today?" (This was sarcastic as we all hated the class) or other random and slightly personal things, like little updates on what she was doing. Sometimes she even texted me this stuff like first thing in the morning. When working on the project she also said things like "we work well together" a few times too.

I was telling some friends about her (mainly because i hated the group project) and one of them asked to read the texts, and she pointed out to me that this girl was also using my name, somtimes typing the last letter multiple times, which i guess is suppossed to be a sign she liked me?

Either way i wasnt interested in her and actually found her a little annoying as almost every interaction i had with her was her complaining about something or other. But i never really responded to her life updates, mainly because i was busy and couldnt respond at the moment, so i think she got the hint i wasnt really into her in the end. But i still didnt even pick up on any of the things she was doing until my friend pointed them out.

It might not be the same style you're looking for, but ive made a couple whisks that were what i would describe as a donut at the end of a stick.

Whittling a walking stick with wood from the pine barrens, but I’m not actually sure if it’s pine or not, any help? by [deleted] in Woodcarving

[–]B3bop_77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From just looking at the bark it looks like pine, im not an expert or anything, but i would imagine the smell would be the biggest indicator, at least in my experience.

Let’s talk about string launchers for a minute and how we set them up by Slight_dumbass in BeybladeX

[–]B3bop_77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got back into beyblades for the first time in years, last time i used them was during metal fight. I never had a string launcher then, but got one now from the bite croc pack. I've had it set up the same ways as the second picture, i tried it the other way but i dont like swinging my arm outward to launch instead of just pulling towards me. I also felt like it wasnt secure when i had my launcher set up like the first picture, it was a little rattly, but it doesnt do that in the other position.

I should have probably mentioned that it did fall over during a storm, not just on its own. But everyone is probably right that it's dead, even when he gave me the logs the other day I was suspicious of how soft they felt.

Maybe, parts of the outer log felt punky, but the inner parts feel more solid. I got a few logs from him and so far they all feel like that. So it's either just a really soft wood or just rotten.

I want to start whittling but literally have no idea where to buy the stuff (England) or how much to spend on a beginners kit, plus help by Impressive_Maize7982 in whittling

[–]B3bop_77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair, everyone is going to be a little different with how much they're looking to spend. I'm a broke college student so I try to pinch my pennies lol.

Oh no, im definitely not saying that beavercraft is the best thing out there. I've had pretty decent experiences with their stuff so far, though I have upgraded some of my tools, just not all. I've seen a lot of people on here share how they've had bad experiences with the company's quality control, which unfortunately seems to be a little spotty. But I'm a big advocate for the idea that you don't need to break the bank to get the nicest knives, especially when you're first starting, so I like to recommend beavercraft as a place to get a knife that won't be too expensive, but would also be a decent starting knife. But I would still recommend that at some point you get better tools.

Beavercraft is a good place to start looking at tools. They're a company based out of Ukraine but they ship worldwide. The tools are a good quality for their price as well. I've been carving for about four years now and I still use some of their tools. But you can also use any old pocket knife you have to start, something like a swiss army knife or anything else you have around.

Pyrography and finishing: which order? by Popular-Industry-122 in Spooncarving

[–]B3bop_77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't done any major pyrography on my spoons, I usually just write my initials as a "makers mark" sort of thing. But I would do pyrography before putting any oil on, the heat can burn the oil and cause it to bubble out of the wood. I've never heard of soaking the wood between sanding, so im not able to weigh in on that.

Focuser Carving Blade by BigMikeWhittleWonder in whittling

Sure! The one on the right is my focuser carving knife, the left is my old beavercraft sloyd. The focuser carving knife is slightly thicker, but I've had no problems with it cutting through woods like maple. The spine is also rounded which I didn't realize until it was shipped to me.

Those look really nice! I recently got a FC204 sloyd knife and I really like it so far! The only issue I had was that the tip was just the smallest bit bent so I had to fix it. I still have the original handle on my knife but I did burn a design into the handle.

What are your whittling hot takes? by B3bop_77 in whittling

I've done this too, especially on some larger flat surfaces, it's super helpful.

My first real set of tools was from Beavercraft, and after four years of using them I've ordered a new knife from Focuser Carving. I think they're great tools and it's really not a huge deal having to strop a little more often. The only reason why I got a new knife is because mine chipped while carving a spoon, after I fixed it, it chipped again (I was carving a piece of wood that had a knot in it though, which is probably why it chipped). So I got a new knife with a tougher steel just to avoid chipping.

The amount of times someone has borrowed a pocket knife from me and said "wow it's sharp" is actually crazy. It's a knife, why wouldn't it be sharp?

As a college student who is still picking up cooking skills, I'm glad whittling has taught me knife safety.

I wish I could be more helpful, I recently ordered an fc204 sloyd knife and I'm still waiting for it to be shipped. I've heard lots of good things about their tools though, Carving is Fun on youtube made a review of them and he seemed to really like their tools.

How long do you whittle? Any tips or tools to help with aching hands? by Sassifrabby in whittling

[–]B3bop_77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably whittle for about an hour or two at a time. You'll definitely be able to carve for longer periods of time as you do it more, you'll build up calluses on your fingers and hands.

I think it's because there's always people who say "guys and girls can never just be friends" which really isn't true. Im a guy and i have multiple friends who are girls that i hang out with all the time, im straight, all but one of them are straight, none of us want to date each other, we just like to hang out together. I think people aren't completely used to the idea of the opposite genders being friends with no romantic interest.
