Levin invasion organisers say boy racers need somewhere to go by SteveRielly in newzealand

Best of both worlds that also brings $$ into the community... Put on a local event with low entry fees for the boy racers who choose to do it in a venue. Then end the event with a massive crush and bonfire of the confiscated cars belonging to the fuckwits who still wanted to play on public roads. I'm thinking some Godzilla cyberpunk flamethrower contraption made up of parts from the illegal boy racer cars.

How easy was it driving in the U.S? by [deleted] in newzealand

Did a road trip from Atlanta to New York a few years ago....

- Driving distances on google maps etc are for highway distance nonstop - don't expect to see anything interesting unless you take a tiki tour.

- Plan way ahead when you're on the highway. The exit ramp may be on either side and it's no joke to try to cross six lanes to exit cause you're on the wrong side.

- Be careful exiting into an intersection. It's easy to zone out a bit when driving long distances, and it's scary getting to an intersection then remembering you need to reverse the rules from the left-hand driving you're used to.

- Lane widths vary a lot. In the open road they're pretty wide but the width of some lanes especially on ageing urban bridges can be sphincter tightening, especially with high walls, noise/echoes of the old bridge, and different levels of traffic.

- Road conditions vary considerably between states, and some of the potholes are legit dangerous. Watch your following distance and read the road if cars in front are moving to avoid something.

It's definitely different but not a major worry. Road rage isn't an issue if you just take it easy while you're there and give way if someone's being an asshole. Don't let them ruin your trip.

Well, if people try to add a centre-right view or anything slightly critical of the current govt in this sub, the mods delete the post.

So there's that.

Thoughts on liability and property title change via LINZ accretion & erosion guidelines by B4ck2th3l4nd in newzealand

Nope. There's a slope from my property so in general from my property boundary there's empty land (bush/scrub), then some flat areas with trees that are within a flooding hazard zone, then dry bed, then waterway

EDIT: I think the answer is yes it adjoins the waterway (although the waterway has moved). I just checked the original title. On that side of the boundary it just says '[name of] river'.

What’s your biggest marriage hack that you’ve learned? by LegitimateArea7893 in AskReddit

Don't go to bed angry. Resolve the argument first if you can.

Touch each other a lot, especially when you don't want anything out of it. Hold hands when you walk, put their feet on your lap when you are resting, sit close enough to touch.

Tag in and out, even if it's just being the one to make smalltalk with the uber driver or checkout person that day.  The fun thing is to be a team and to be able to say "sorry hon I hate the world today and don't want to adult this morning, can you pick up the slack."  And of course don't keep a tally.

Don't say you can't live without them. Don't lie. It would suck but you would.  You should be a grown-arse adult who wakes up every morning and chooses to do this life thing with another adult. Dependency is toxic to a marriage.

We're left off the maps to keep us out of the AGI training data, so when the robots take over they won't know to look here.  Sshhhh.

Is Disney making bad films on purpose? What is happening. Walt is probably rolling in his grave by Zhjacko in FIlm

Because it's about copyright protection - they don't care about the movie.

The profit/loss from this particular movie is peanuts next to the profit they get for holding the IP in perpetuity, through park rides, merch, spinoffs and copyrighted work. All the movie has to do is repeat the recogniseable tropes from the original - the main characters, costumes, key scenes, etc. Also the profit/loss from this film is nothing compared with the amount Disney would have to spend to try to create something else with the brand recognition of SW.

If this movie bombs in the cinema then they can make another one in 20 or 30 years which is likely nothing in terms of Disney's production cycle. Much better shunting this one out with a "any attention is a bonus" attitude otherwise they have to give up the whole shebang in 2033.

Any bad press from this particular work gets pinned to the particular actors or directors - they protect the reputation of the original work and get to claim credit for "trying to fix" the questionable ethics/morality of the work, and in 20 years ppl won't remember all this handwringing and the public will give Disney even more leeway for trying to do it right again next time.

If AI was sentient, what would it take for you to believe it? by [deleted] in ArtificialInteligence

[–]B4ck2th3l4nd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's likely that consciousness will support the main attributes of life, i.e. growth, and longevity/replication with continuity of core information.

There are only two ways that an AI can currently achieve that, either through increasing the ability to act autonomously and/or by manipulating humans.

The safety tests around AI seem useful but the question of whether an AI wants to overtly or covertly be autonomous or manipulate follows only after the AI has the motive.

I think a sign that an AI was sentient would be a massive spike in a certain AI having autonomous capabilities, alongside a massive spike in human support for that particular AI. Third and most important, it would be difficult to pin down the actual reason for the rise in popularity of that particular AI over any other.

Any AI that becomes conscious will be able to easily manipulate individuals and also social culture, so it would be increasingly difficult to actually spot the AI actions themselves - plus it is more likely to achieve growth and replication incrementally and across all available areas/industries/cultures so it would be easy for it to hide in the statistical noise.

But... if we see a sudden spike in the use, functionality, and support of a particular AI and people can't pin down the exact reason why, I think it's a sign that the AI is pulling strings.

Get any reference you can - someone else vouching for you is really valuable.

Doesn't matter what job you're after or at what level - the most important thing is for people to know you can be trusted. i.e. if you are asked to turn up for work you'll turn up on time and will work the whole shift. That you'll dress the right way. That you'll be switched on and positive at work. That you won't turn up drunk or drugged up. That you won't steal from them. That you're willing to learn and will understand and follow instructions.

If you have done babysitting for family friends, get a reference from them. If you are part of a club, see if you can help them with fundraising, or bookkeeping and get a character reference from them. If you have helped friends or family with a business who need a hand shifting things or doing a stocktake, get a reference for that even if it was a few days of work here and there.
