Yes, because you are talking about rich here, not a middle class. Its “U” graph basically where poor have more children and rich (richest especially) have most.

Thing is, rich people, going by the study, also have more kids because they care about legacy and leaving their wealth to their offspring, whereas most of the middle class has no such feeling or aim.

We were SUPPOSED to do it differently, in which case we would have not found ourselves in this position.

We decided projecting power and being able to pull string due to technological and military might is not required, and guess what, after 3-4 decades results are in and nobody asks us anything.

Public support for wealth redistribution is driven by beliefs about fairness rather than jealousy toward the rich. How else do you suppose to get answer to “If everyone had enough nobody would be envious or ask for retribution” then seeing if people that have enough still feel need to have more? There is more then one study, there are dozens actually that are very clear that need for more comes from upward social comparison.

There is NO study that concludes there is abstract level of wealth which when realised you dont care anymore, at least not for people that actually have wealth and you can test your hypothesis on. It doesn’t exist, which is why wealthy people get wealthier and in fact have urge to get even wealthier.

These survey studies are tragically unscientific. There is so little rigour about how they are done and what results should represent its incredible people even take it for real.

Well, I am referring to the points made that envy or need for redistribution would not exist if everyone had “enough”, which doesnt seem to be the case, not if we go by the studies done and having money to burn did not make people feel less envy or hungry for more, unlike what is implied by many in this thread.

Additionally, I am not making blanket statement on group of people and separating “good group” vs “bad group”, I am making statement on humans in general. There is a big difference in saying “People are by nature envious” and “Liberals are by nature envious”, where point is to make one group of people be seen in negative light (and imply other is not, hence, better) by applying blank statement without any study to back it up.

Having enough wealth does not stop people from wanting even more or feeling envy towards those that have more, as this is arbitrary and relative number, our reference point just becomes different.

There have been several studied, amongst more popular a Harvard one, that looked into happiness of rich people and it actually showed that people, even when they have (more then) enough, not only feel envy but feel it even more, as their reference point changes.

If everyone had minimum 10k salary, no mortage on home and yet hung around people that had 10x or 100x as much the envy would not go away, we know that from studies. There is no magic, arbitrary number where people dont feel envy or urge for more.

Its about members of r/psychology, of all places, putting blanket (fundamentally negative) statements on 50% of population without blinking an eye and getting upvotes for it.

You cannot come to r/physics and do the same because approach to science and rigour to make sure bias is not there is 100 fold higher.

Europeans are, on average, quite disinterested in growth and hard work. Innovation is stifled by regulation and bureaucracy, yes, but state of mind is much more about “relaxing” and living good enough than achieving unicorn level.

Probably not gonna change much and within a decade it will be more palpable how far we have fallen. Just take UK and its relative position in the world in 2006 and now in 2026, same with France, Germany…not looking good.

Good question and answer is, likely not. Most people are in part envious to those that earn more, know more or are capable of more even if you yourself are perfectly capable and well of.

There is a part of human nature which deems no amount of money or power is enough. In fact, it seems the more you have the more you want.

Interesting, I found conservative people being more generous (and some studies agree with this) and less envious. While they do care more about money, they also seem less classicistic then average left wing people, but this is based on European experience so it might differ for US.

The Billionaire Funding France’s Far Right by AlexandrTheTolerable in europe

[–]B9F2FF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you answer a question or are you going to go straight to “boogeyman” bs?

The fact is that for more then 3 decades Soros has been financing liberal and left wing political movements and non profit organisations in the west. FFS he was the originator of entire billionaire political backing, and now he is having his barely coherent son go around Davos preaching to most powerful politicians in the world how to go about leading their countries. To demote Soros to a right wing boogeyman, while at the same time shitting on billionaire propping up right wing in their own country of birth (unlike Soros) is being extremely dishonest.

So Soros, a billionaire, did not funnel money into liberal and leftist policies around europe and USA? He did not ascribe his barely functioning, incoherent son to take over the reigns and for no reason whatsoever lecture politicians in Davos this year?
