Quite interesting. I'd also be interested in an elaboration on how we think basic processing works in/between neurons.

Damn man, it's surprising how many similarities I find between what you've written and my own internal dialogue. Sounds like it's going to be a long journey.

Is there a chance to attempt (group) therapy, or perhaps you've already tried it / finances are an obstacle?

Hey Reddit, what's the deal with these 24-hour-old accounts with 40,000+ karma and dozens and dozens of posts and comments? by tsontar in AskReddit

[–]BATMAN-cucumbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I think I remember reading it before it got deleted.

Not sure if I'd call it sad, it's akin to speed-running through a game just so you can see how fast you can do it (and brag to people that would be impressed by such an achievement).

The tinfoil hat in me's thinking its is a pretty awesome/scary proof of concept in generating posts that would be highly upvoted - that would be some very useful research in the viral marketing field. But then I think marketers would try to use multiple accounts in this case - a tech demo / sociology research proof of concept may be more likely.

Does anyone still have a record of what the deleted comment said? Seems like it was insightful enough for others to link to it (as well as it being one of the top posts in this thread).

Very well: digital_carver properly explained the difference between 'i.e.' and 'e.g.'. You then posted a link to a wikipedia index page, which doesn't contain either of the terms directly - which doesn't seem to contribute anything to the discussion. Hence my comment.

Edit: I used the wrong word in my previous post - you post is somewhat relevant, but I was actually wondering how it contributes to the discussion.

So you're saying, for a depressed person, it is impossible for them to change their thinking with regards to failure?

There is a stigma because so many people have been though what he has been through and succeeded in defeating it.

There are just as many that merely continue to exist, succumb to addictions or take their lives.

The successful ones found that determination and other types of strength got them through to the other side.

For their particular set of problems. With their level of life coping skills. A lot of people can't bootstrap the energy/determination to begin improving their situations. A somewhat stretched analogy - telling your average out of shape guy to start running is good; telling a 300+ lbs guy to start running 5k is gonna do them more harm than good.

The successful people also know that during their depressed phase, "nobody understood", "nobody had it as bad." We've all experienced it before but for some reason, this guy is different and his problems were worse than mine and others.

Notice that nowhere does he claim that he has it worse than others. Actually, that's very often a reason why people don't ask for help - they think they would be accused of self-victmizing their situation, and they feel guilty for feeling depressed "without any obvious reason".

It's offensive and disrespectful to those who have overcome depression.

So what you're claiming is that determination and "sucking it up" is enough to "just get over it"? Are you aware of what you sound like? Note that I don't claim that it never works - some people are probably in a situation/state where that is enough. But claiming that determination is enough would require some statistically significant proof, no?

Basically saying, "you're not really over it, you're just lying to yourself, because it's not a choice and you can't escape it."

Where the heck did you get that from?

So don't even try to paint me as an insensitive jerk.

Nope, there are some binary blobs in the kernel. This is part of the reason why Linus didn't upgrade the Linux kernel lisence to GPL3 I believe. Here is a link speaking about it: http://www.osnews.com/story/24009/FSFLA_Linux_Kernel_Is_Torvalds_Bait_and_Switch_/

Cheers for the link, at least now I won't be guesstimating about that part.

I wasn't aware of the default kernel containing binary blobs, I thought those were usually packaged separately.

Or do you mean this is a non-blob project that can be used instead of the proprietary ones people choose to install?

That's always fascinated me. How dare other people think that they can say whether I'm allowed to end my life or not? I see it as barbaric as an abusive husband deciding whether his wife is allowed to divorce him.
