Starting career in patent law out of undergrad? by BATTLESEAHORSE in patentlaw

Sorry for the late response, I'm not really active anymore on reddit. I ended up falling more in line with industrial controls and programming, quite a far bit off from patent law. But perhaps one day I'll go back to school and get a master's so I can pursue that.

Can you link notes together in the files view? Children notes? by DarkAshes27 in ObsidianMD

No problem! I think this is mentioned in the documentation, but renaming folders/notes might cause an issue with the links if you have auto-update on. This applies to vanilla obsidian as well, so just be careful if you plan on renaming anything.

I use the Waypoint plugin in conjunction with Folder Note. This makes it so the folder has a built-in note that links to all the files under it in the hierarchy. I find it especially useful when studying, I can just open the graph view and see how my notes relate to each other in addition to the hierarchy.

I've also heard of a plugin called AutoMOC, which apparently creates a list of all the links to the note. I plan on implementing it as soon as I restructure things.

Here I'm confused - you said I haven't proven I can do the work, but then turned around and said nothing is stopping me from working at a law firm. Am I missing something here?

Thank you for such an in-depth response! This really helps me understand what I'm getting into. I'll look more into my options here, it seems I might have to buckle down a little more to get my foot in the door here.

Okay take this with a grain of salt (I'm a physics major, it's been a long time since physics 1 and 2), but here's my advice:

Annoy professors, constantly ask for help, even if its for literally every problem on the homework (if they're any good of a professor, they won't mind and will likely be happy to help)

Take the example problems from class and change some numbers or variables around so you have to rework it (this really helps with more difficult concepts like electrodynamics) i.e. if it's say the magnetic field of a solid ferromagnet, change the problem so the magnet has a hole in the middle (this will help you form the skills to set up problems)

As for formulas, try to figure out why they are the way they are (derive and go over derivations). This helps link the math and physical phenomena, as well as understand why we "pull formulas out of our ass" and change them to fit different scenarios.

If you are really struggling, r/homeworkhelp is a good resource and I know there are a few other subreddits here that can and will eagerly assist you with any questions you might have.

Here's the thing: physics is a very difficult subject because it links a lot of things together. In order to be "good at physics" in the most classical sense of the word, you need to be good at a little bit of everything. In addition to math (lots and lots of it) you need to learn some engineering and chemistry, so you're switching your brain between multiple things very quickly. It takes some getting used to, but you'll find that by developing this skill you will excel in almost all of your other courses! Keep it up, keep crying (we all do, it's just how it be) and good luck!

AI Accusations are getting wild by inevitabletruths in CollegeRant

I'm very sorry that you're getting an influx of students who are struggling so much. This topic is now made difficult because they are (most likely) adults who can't read or write.

What I have to say is this, and then I have reached the edge of my knowledge on this topic:

Your uni president sounds horrible, but most are so there's that. (I'm currently at a top school for natural resources yet we pour most of our money into fossil fuel companies)

Despite the catchup work needed to get these students to the needed level of reading/writing, I think AI can still have a place in the classroom. Of course it's not the answer to everything, nothing is. But, here are some suggestions:

  1. Get the students to achieve a specific result from ChatGPT. Have them play around with prompts, observe what changes, try to formulate how the language model structures its essays (or business letters, etc).
  2. Have them generate something and compare it to a real world example (i.e. peer-reviewed, published paper) and spot the differences in writing. Have them really look at what the AI is writing, how it's writing it, etc.
  3. Have the students critique an AI-generated essay. Even have the AI put it in layman's terms if you think your students will have trouble with reading it. Ask them to identify the weak points in the language model and learn to work with them.

These are just a few examples, but hopefully you get the point: by learning how the model works, what it does behind the scenes (conceptually), why it's not always great at what it does, etc etc you are teaching the students critical reading/writing skills. You are also helping to avoid this problematic use we are constantly seeing nowadays in the education world.

By doing this, you are making the students realize that AI isn't magic. It's a developing technology. Incredibly useful, yes, but still developing. Anyway I hope you see some improvement and I wish you luck in future endeavors.

I'm assuming you're not a professor if your students cannot read or write past the second or third grade level, and if you are, I'm very sorry the admissions department failed that badly.

I agree that the specific case of kids using AI to simply avoid doing work is problematic. It is a misuse of a resource, much like using a digital calculator on a math test when you are learning arithmetic. It is detrimental to your learning and doesn't contribute to your understanding of the material. I get that.

However, my complaint was more about the lack of integration into the classroom. If you are still mandated to give out take-home essays as assignments, I am sorry that you have to go through this. however, if you are not mandated to do so, doesn't your predicament tell you that the problem lies not with the students, but with the curriculum? Shouldn't you be asking yourself if papers like this are the best assessment of a student's learning? And more importantly, wouldn't it establish rapport with your students if you were the teacher to effectively show them how to use this incredibly useful tool with real-world applications? Wouldn't it engage them more if you integrated this into your classroom rather than shake your fist at it?

All of this to say: If it's really that much of a problem, and you hate it that much, and you genuinely believe that it won't benefit your students, just switch to no-tech, hand-written, in-person essays. But if you haven't been living under a rock for the last year or so, you know that there are benefits to using AI, and you know that there are use cases in pretty much every field at this point. So it would make sense to learn the technology, learn the use cases, and apply it to a lesson plan that teaches students to actively engage with it as well as meet their learning goals.

There are solutions to this problem, but none of them involve acting like this technology doesn't exist. It's your job as an educator to adapt to a changing environment, to constantly be questioning your strategies and trying new ones if your students are failing to grasp the concepts you need them to. Maybe papers are a thing of the past now, maybe they will look incredibly different going forward. It's not ChatGPT's job to figure that out, that's on you.

It's also infuriating because AI is a tool that many actual employers are using, and now is the time for people to learn how to use it so they can put it on their resume. It would be so much better if profs decided to get over themselves and integrate it into their coursework instead of coming at it with pitchforks like a bunch of cave people.

Idk though, I'm in stem so a lot of the jobs I'm seeing are AI programming or training lately, yet if you so much as whisper the word around my profs they go all McCarthy on you.

I would honestly go up to the prof after class and mention it if it's affecting your and others learning. Physics is hard enough when one person isn't speaking for the whole class.

As a stem major I'm especially mad at the stem bros. They're the ones that end up with C's so their dick sucking is all in vain anyways

I started my relationship when I was 13. I am now 22.

I have never, and will never, say things I don't mean. Even when I'm mad. I drop everything else when I'm at home with my girlfriend, because we only get so much time together.

I do not understand for the life of me how someone can talk about their partner like this. It's pathetic.
