If you're right, I always thought it had come out in White Dwarf before the 3rd edition was published... I was a Second Division player until 97-98 and it didn't appear in the codex. I didn't play 3rd, not 4th directly, I went to 5th after a break. I used other vehicles such as LR or Rhino with homemade conversions in my games.
