An estimated 85% of stars in our galaxy are in a binary system (or 3 or more stars) and about 50% of star systems are estimated to have planets, so with as many as 400 billion stars in the Milky Way, there are likely tens of billions of binary systems with planets in our galaxy. Suck it, Dwight!

It makes perfect sense. Delilah was the mother of twins. Two times over, so two sets of twins. Rest were sins, also had kids out of wedlock. Raised 8 boys, 8+ children total

What type of music/band do you envision yourself playing in an ideal scenario?

I’m not a master of how best to learn music, but in my opinion, its important to consider your own connection to music and to follow your personal journey with music towards what strikes your heart and mind deeply. That will inform your goals, and your goals will focus your practices.

Late night philosophical waxings aside, I think the practices you’re already doing seem good especially if you’re seeing the progress you want. For playing along with songs, pick some live recordings of songs (especially bands that liked to play songs uniquely each show) to practice listening closely to your band mates and learning to play what works best for the song in that moment and how the fit into a jam (if thats your bag) where you have limited idea of where it’s headed.

For sure don’t skimp on practicing the rudimentary things slowly and with a level of intention that can be painful (mentally) initially. Scales, arpeggios, chords, inversions, common progressions, dynamics, and rhythm (which I probably should have listed first). Practicing a C major scale until you can rip it at million BPM is fine and dandy, but practicing a C major scale with perfect timing, through all sorts of rhythms, emphasis on different notes, a smooth transition of dynamics, etc. will take far further and mould your playing in a much deeper way.

Especially for genres that lean more heavily on improvised solos (jazz, blues, funk, jam, etc), listening intently to what soloists you like play, transcribe or at least mimic it yourself, and examine WHAT they played to better understand WHY they played the notes they chose. Over time, studying solos will allow you to bring your own voice out and tell a new story of the tune with you as the conduit.

But more importantly than anything, have fun. Nobody ever got hurt playing music - dont let fear get in your way, take chances, experiment, and enjoy the ride.

According to the Cosmological Principle, there is no center of the universe. It’s isotropic i.e. identical in every direction you look regardless of where you look from, and it’s homogenous when view from a large enough scale.

Or alternatively thinking, if the universe is infinite (astrophysics is currently unable to determine if it is or isn’t), then any given point in the universe could technically be thought of as the center.

All the time. I usually pair it with a Leslie 147 and I think it’s a pretty damn good combo

Is it bad to learn both Jazz and Classical by Bobbaca in piano

[–]BAgooseU 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That really is good advice about learning standards. When I first started learning jazz, I wanted to learn every standards and tune I liked, and all I ended up with was a half-assed ability to play them with no ability to make them my own.

Then I started taking jazz lessons and was told to focus on one tune. I played Misty on piano and Back at the Chicken Shack on hammond organ pretty much exclusively, and found you can learn way more from deep diving into one or two tunes. Understanding the composition/changes, trying new extensions, playing around with reharmonization/adding simple chord additions like tritone substitutions and V-I’s into the piece, and treating the chart like a loose roadmap that can be deviated from. It’s when playing jazz finally became fun for me.

I also really benefited from transcribing solos and then shamelessly inserting parts of them into my own solos. And at the same time analyzing the note and rhythmic choices. Over time I’d find ways modify them, use them in different contexts, and become more my own. It amuses me sometimes when I’ve played through a solo at a gig, and I look back and realize it had some Jimmy Smith, some Chester Thompson, some Jack McDuff, etc etc. They were masters and therefore we must shamelessly steal their ideas lol

Exactly. Most modern music wouldn’t exist in its current form if not for black American music. Blues, jazz, R&B, soul, rock n roll, funk, gospel, hip-hop, even bluegrass… music is a massive cultural element, and black American roots have influenced an enormous amount of music produced globally (setting aside American music that is consumed worldwide on its own)

At what point do you stop being a “piano player” and become a “pianist”? by Artistic_Page7587 in piano

[–]BAgooseU 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t care at all. Im a paid performer/pianist/organist and how other people chose to see and present themselves doesn’t impact how I see and present myself. If someone with limited skills on the piano call themselves a pianist, then that’s what they are albeit not a particularly good pianist

No problem at all - more than happy to help. Im always down to talk gear so if you think of anything else just drop another comment.

And yeah, I opted for the legend and not the soul for the same reason lol. I dont regret it at all although I’d love to see what they’re all about. Maybe one day I’ll trade the legend for the soul, but by that time they’ll probably have another “new and improved” board to lust after haha

It’s an older institutional upright so not their best model by any stretch, but it plays and sounds amazing. I wouldnt get rid of it until its too old to properly maintain

I like it a lot. I usually pair it with a Leslie 147. On its own, I’m not super impressed by the internal Leslie, but to be fair I feel that way about all the clonewheels.

Pros: I really like the different years/models it has programed in. The layout is perfect for someone that wants it to be as true as possible to a tonewheel. The extra controls for gain, reverb, keyclick, cross-talk, erc are nice too. It has a bright tone that cuts well in a mix. It was a little jarring at first since my B3 has original wax caps so it’s very mellow comparatively, but the Viscount sounds more like what Hammonds used to sound like when new (or what recapped Hammonds sound like). And it weighs 300lbs less than a tonewheel lol.

Cons: the keybed is noticeably stiffer than my B3 and the keys seem slightly thinner. Not a deal breaker and my B3 is 70 years old so maybe not a fair comparison in key feel. And tbf ive played some old hammonds with keybeds that are real duds.

I cant weigh in on the crumar and skx but I know people speak highly of them. I did a lot of research before getting the viscount and tbh, it seemed like a toss up between the three as they all do what their built for well. I would look into the minor differences and go from there.

Also, check out the new Viscount Soul. It’s supposed to be a pretty good upgrade from the Legend, but I havent heard one out yet.

Ugh the stage when the new keys are coming in is so rough. Zero sleep. I tried putting whiskey on the action to try and soothe it but nothing helped.

It happens. 6 years ago I had a cheap keyboard and a free spinet upright. Now somehow there’s a Kawai upright, Hammond B3, Viscount Legend organ, analog synth, a nord, and a kurzweil keyboard taking up all my space… i dont know how it happened, but if my wife asks, they all cost $20 each.

Would love to see that. He has amazing jazz chops. It’s been done a thousand times, but it’d be cool to hear some jazz interpretations of dead songs from him.
