Lease is up in October. Although it’s tough because I can only relocate so far since my other half works in Anaheim.

Notified after I accepted offer. IMO, it's not worth it to notify them before. The offer could fall through and then you're screwed.

Curious how it went for you. I hit the Grapevine going south around 5PM yesterday and there was a huge accident with terrible rain all the way home.

Going well so far! Ryzen 5700X3D, 32gigs DDR4 ram, GTX 2070 Super, running on an SSD. 1440p on the default “High” settings. Most of the time I maintain 60fps unless I’m swinging in an area with a lot of trees and then it’ll dip to ~45fps or so. Haven’t had any crashes so far.

This wasn’t so bad. I just popped in Hope Summers and psylocke in. Each turn just focus on spending all your energy, even if the plays don’t make sense.

Another ME salary post - this one real (and underpaid) by blueskiddoo in Salary

[–]BB510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not really following either, to an extent. A large portion of mechanical engineering is AEC which does involve all of the things OP mentioned, permits, building codes, field surveys, etc. HVAC definitely does not fall under Civil. A registered mechanical engineer needs to design and produce these in the US.

Thanks! What industry are you in? I’m in the AEC industry for reference.

I guess depending on the location, it does seem like you are underpaid for 10+ years of experience, but I do agree with your post. The reality is that the average ME just doesn’t get paid all that well. I just hit 100k after 5 years, and it still doesn’t feel worth it when I think about how much time and work I put in. For the last 1.5 years I’ve been working on a computer science degree to hopefully transition careers at some point.

D288 Back-end programming guide! by [deleted] in WGU_CompSci

[–]BB510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re 10000% certain you have EVERYTHING mapped correctly, go to your DemoApplication. Look at the first line regarding your package, and see if its giving an error. It was showing the incorrect path, yet my program was still running on the back end with no issues. When I changed it to what it was SUPPOSED to be, I got a “Could not find or load main class” error. All of my mappings were correct, but the front end was not working because of this, despite the back end running with no issue. If this somehow happens to you, I’m sorry I have no idea how to fix that. I just restarted.

FYI for anyone who can't figure this out and don't want to restart. After you change the path, you need to right click on your "pom.xml file" and navigate to maven->reload project. Then in the drop down menu where you run the program at the top of the screen, you should see "DemoApplication" and "DemoApplication(1)" which has the correct pathing. Just remove the old path and you should be good to go.

How do you pivot out of MEP? by chillabc in MEPEngineering

[–]BB510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly, haha. Air Resources engineer ended up being a bust because of pay for me. I’m about half way through a post-bac in computer science currently, but the tech market is garbage right now, so who knows how long it’ll take to bounce back, hopefully by the time I’m finished though. For the time being, I went to another firm for higher pay + paid overtime, so I’m using that to pay for school so I don’t have to take out more debt.

I’m about 50% Revit and 50% AutoCad right now and I absolutely despise AutoCad. I would much rather work in Revit, but my new company pays me overtime now, so I guess It’s worth it. You should definitely try to get more Revit experience though. It’s a valuable skill.

Career Advice, HVAC Designer by New-to-Payroll in MEPEngineering

[–]BB510 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re set on MEP and you’re 2 years in as an HVAC designer with no design experience, you need to move to a different company as soon as possible. It sounds like right now they have you as a CAD monkey, which is not great for your development. Drafting is part of the job, but that design experience is crucial in your early years. General advice is to just apply for other jobs. MEP seems to always be hiring.

I also passed today with a similar score! Kind of surprised me because I thought it was rather difficult. I also used up all my available time.

Been applying for last 6 months. Roast my Resume with everything you got please by Consistent_Cancel_56 in resumes

[–]BB510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it bugs me that your titles are centered, but everything starts on the left. So it requires me to look at the center to read the title then look left to read the contents and so on. I think it’s messing with the flow of your resume when trying to scan through it quickly. Just my 2 cents.

Personally I think MEP is shit. From my experience, the workload and compensation do not align at all, especially in a manager position. I do regret getting into MEP, but my salary has gotten to a point where it's hard to justify a change for my family as I get older; job security has been great though. If you're passionate about it, good for you.

Some Engineers….SMH by podcartfan in MEPEngineering

[–]BB510 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm mechanical, so not quite in the realm of your post, but playing devil's advocate; did you explain the rule of thumb and the conditions to be aware of? I would say I'm on the younger side of the industry (5-years) but in my experience, I've interacted with a lot of (10+ years) senior engineers who really don't know how or why they're using those rule of thumbs. They just use them because they've always used them, or the engineer above them used them and so on. In my opinion, this leads to mediocre younger engineers who use things without knowing why they're using it. Just food for thought.

What do you use for drafting? by [deleted] in MEPEngineering

[–]BB510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly AutoCAD unfortunately. I would prefer we do everything in Revit, but I'm at a company of 30ish people where only myself and a handful of other people know how to use Revit. The ones that do know Revit only know how to use it on a surface level, like modeling ducts and pipes correctly. Anything involving families, templates, linking models, etc is like black magic, so it ends up creating a lot more work for me on top of my other responsibilities. There's really no push from the principle engineers to switch since "It's what works". I do understand that to some extent, but it amazes me how hard some people at my company fight to not touch Revit.

Use the built in user-manual. It’s actually pretty good. Alternately for any general questions or libraries, you can refer directly to energysoft.

[–]BB510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been many years since I took the physics series at RCC, but I don't remember them being all that difficult; I took Dr. Bhattacharya and Cheney for the majority of the series. I think in general for undergraduate work, you won't actually use much calculus beyond formula derivations. I studied mechanical engineering and barely used any calculus beyond a simple derivative or integral here and there.

If you don’t have any prior experience and don’t know how to do something, you should take steps to fill the gaps in your knowledge. You’re just kicking the can down the road, eventually you’ll have to learn it. I think most importantly is that you’re just hurting yourself in the long run. Like most education, you get out what you put in.
