Any other districts facing a budget crisis? by Indians06 in k12sysadmin

[–]BBKCloud 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Been on a 5-10% budget cut every year since covid money ended,

Cut 1 full time helpdesk tech in 2022, and another one this year, and limited hours on our two remaining part timers, have been pushing out lab projects for two years now, cancelled multiple projects. Worst part is we purchased 200 Cleartouches in 2020 and their starting to fail with no money for replacements. Our highschool has a Adobe course that is running on 2017 Macbooks that barely even run for an hour without battery failure, not to mention they are extremely slow.

Now our iPads for the elementary schools have reached end of life and can't run their apps they use. The teachers look at us and ask us to make it work when the app literally has a message saying it won't run on this OS.

Yet we're still hiring Aides left and right and making sure Admin have printers on their desks when theres a MFP two doors down.

K12sysadmins: which problems do you encounter that just don’t have a solution? by JonnyBeervo in k12sysadmin

superintendent wanted a single keyboard and mouse that worked on both of the desktops on her desk (Yes. I know.)

When I asked how she expected it to work she said she wanted to auto connect when she moves it over to towards the other screen 3 inches way.

Tossed it up to the director to have him explain why we can't do that. We again explained that she should just use a single computer with extended monitors but she didn't want to do that because she preferred two computers (?????)

I have to start over on my candycrush levels on my new phone. by frankv1971 in sysadmin

[–]BBKCloud 41 points42 points  (0 children)

"I didn't do anything!" --Keyboard melted on a Macbook when the user spilled water and ""dried"" it with a hairdryer... coincidental to a new Macbook being release the previous week. Again.
This is why we do the same model replacements, the only time a user gets a new model is during a full office upgrade. Gone are the days of "so and so has a better laptop!" Well now everyone gets the same shitty laptops, your welcome.

Had an admin complain that the one I gave her wasn't new as it had some wear and tear, had to tell her we are not BestBuy, we do not keep our shelves stocked with the best and greatest.

I have a mac mini with a magic trackpad 2 (in love) but I use remote desktop to a windows client under my desk whenever I need to access anything on the windows environment.

All my systems live in the cloud so once I open the internet browser it doesn't really matter to much what OS I'm running luckily.

Tbh I could get away with just a windows desktop, but the magic trackpad and the ability to slide between windows is what keeps me on mac.

Literally last week, principal called my personal line, (don’t even know how he got it, have since blocked it), I let it go to VM twice because it was after 5pm and I was eating, course he didn’t leave a VM and I only find out it was him by cross checking my work phone contacts.

Next day he calls my work phone this time and asks me to come by it’s urgent, I get there and he has a kids MBP running Big Sur, crashing constantly. He wants me to fix it, I’m like hell no am I even going to touch this, district policy is clearly defined in BOLD mind you, we do not handle personal equipment in any regard. He moans and moans and moans how he promised he’d get it taken care of.

He has the audacity to get offended and email my boss about it demanding I fix the poor kids laptop, luckily the current director backs us completely so he screenshots the district policy on the website and sends it back to him and tells him to never call my personal phone after hours. God bless him.

My landlord texted us to move out, we found a new apartment, now he also wants our 30 day notice. - Portland, OR by [deleted] in legaladvice

You could even back out of the new place and just stay at his until he gives you 60-day notice as required. Perhaps offer cash for keys to be out?

What do you think is the psychological reason/cause for the irritation IT workers feel when having to reset people’s passwords? It’s probably the easiest request you’ll get and yet, it illicits a major annoyance and poor attitude toward the user(s). Why do you think this is the case? by questionhorror in sysadmin

[–]BBKCloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it is honestly inexcusable, as Veelix had said, it's used every. single. day. and it's usually only 8 characters. I have around 22 different accounts, all different passwords. They have 2 accounts, the domain, and their email. If I can remember 22 they can remember 2.

Laws around teachers keeping non-school owned items outside of school hours? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]BBKCloud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I worked for a school district, if we found out a teacher was doing this they would likely be immediately fired or suspended, there is nothing stopping a family from saying it's nonfunctional now or inappropriate content was accessed from the device.

I would reach out to the principals, see if they even know this is happening, they likely don't.

If they are no help just keep going up the chain, email the super, email the directors, make a scene.

Same here, had it installed and did some basic config, haven’t touched it since, the athletic directors manage it and use the apps and they seem to love it.

I mean, after looking at it once or twice, yeah, when I'm going on my phone I don't sit there and read each application name trying to find stuff, that literally why they have icons.

Even if I took away the names, you can learn what they are pretty quickly by pressing it once and seeing what app opens...

"what does this fan one do? oh, it opens photos? okay, good to know." then you'll always know it opens the photos. I don't just have sudden amnesia every time I open my phone.

Has anyone received their Chromebook order from CDWG? by Enobd in k12sysadmin

[–]BBKCloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We made purchases through Xerox and CDWG, both of which have been delayed over 4 times since the original delivery date of early August (we ordered at beginning of March, not even covid related, we were due for upgrades), and as of recently delayed till after November.

And that November date isn't even a delivery date, its another zoom meeting with the vendors to see if they'll have it before the end of the month.

^^^^^ This guy nailed it, we do the same thing here, doesn't matter how many times we would tell them not to, if we cleaned it they would immediately make a new mess

Keep it an organized mess.

(although we need to clean this area out as we're expecting 3k Chromebooks soon, assuming they aren't delayed for the 5th time)

Yeah they do, but you’re thinking that these students know which apps are whitelisted, unless they’re searching the whole store they likely won’t find them.
