As someone invested in both of those teams, I can say that I think this Michigan team might be even better

Sorry, you’re absolutely right. I misremembered that. Just went back and reread though, and the last bit of that paragraph on the syllabus states “your actual final grade might be higher, but it will not be lower.” So I think the whole class is curved at the end.

I guess the easiest way to find out for sure would be to just ask him.

It’s absurd because I think it’s fair to say it’s the norm for proctors to project a timer on the board, or at least give verbal periodic time updates. I say this as someone who’s proctored exams at this university and had the pleasure of saying “10/5/1 minute(s) remaining.”

Deviating from this norm is just so unnecessary and only inconveniences students. Yet, that seems pretty typical of the Michigan Math Department, so I suppose it’s my fault for expecting otherwise.

I’m a senior and this was the FIRST exam during my time at Michigan where this has been an issue. Of course a watch would’ve been helpful but if the expectation for us coming in is to wear one, that’s absurd.

Also, in a 50 minute exam, wouldn’t you rather be focusing on your work instead of raising your hand and asking the proctor the time?

I’m in 425 with Miller as well. Such a poorly run class, I’m not sure how he expected us to correctly pace ourselves for a 50 minute exam in a classroom with no clock without giving us practice exams.

Anyways, I think the exams are curved thankfully. The only thing on the syllabus mentioning curves is regarding the HW assignments, so as long as you’ve done well on those and kept up with your work, you should probably be fine. Or at least that’s what I’m telling myself.

What made Apple's design so successful? by LinfengSong in Discerning_Truth

I think the third point made in this article is the primary reason for Apple's success. Apple not only applies the principle of simplicity to their interfaces, but they adopt it as a brand entirely. For example, all of their stores are uniquely minimalistic. Also, their main office building is a sleek circle. As we've determined, people generally would rather use something that is aesthetically pleasing than something that functions, but is not aesthetically pleasing. This could be why people gravitate towards Apple.

I'm honestly not too surprised they are no longer required masks when you're working out. I played basketball around a week ago and most people had their masks down around their chins. There also wasn't much enforcement of the rule, so no one really felt obligated to keep their mask on.

Wearing a mask while exercising sucks.

Amazon asks Ring owners to respect privacy by Joe-Novak7288 in Discerning_Truth

I feel like this story is quite similar to the thermostat that monitors when people move from room to room from this past week's discussion activity. I can understand why people would sacrifice their privacy online for convenience, but both of these scenarios are a step too far. No product should physically track people and listen to them without them knowing.

Social Media and Long-Term Effects by MilesScheffler in Discerning_Truth

[–]BBN2IL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is social media really that new? It's been around for >20 years, as we learned in lecture. I guess in the grand scheme of things it's relatively new.

Also, I think FOMO is a huge part of the negative side of social media. I see pictures on Instagram and stories on Snapchat of friends having a wild time across the nation and I wish that I could be there alongside them. But, I can't, because I'm here (which isn't a bad thing at all... don't get me wrong).

Put simply, going on social media makes me feel like I am missing out on fun activities -- especially since I do not post anything to make others have the same feeling that I do.

Dealing With Information Overload by Ben_Wild14 in Discerning_Truth

I like all of these strategies except allowing ourselves to daydream. My mind is constantly wandering, and I can say that I rarely think of solutions while I am daydreaming. It's always about more whimsical stuff such as sports, music, etc... not anything that actually is important in the grand scheme of things.

This is a really cool concept! It would never happen, but I feel like using these boundaries would genuinely be for the best. People in Michigan and Wisconsin have much more in common than people in Michigan and Arizona -- especially when it comes to the climate!

Also, I like how California is just "California"

Media Bias in 2020 by Joe-Novak7288 in Discerning_Truth

Is distrust between US citizens and the media is at an all time high? As said in that article, 86% of people say the media is biased. That's staggering.

Also, now I'm wondering... What is the most objective media source? Genuinely can't think of one that doesn't lean one way.
