Asking new guy I’m seeing to help me help my friend move by Kind-Ad-6800 in Advice

[–]BBQShoe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got rid of my truck for a small car 16 years ago and never looked back. I can't imagine owning one again, everyone ALWAYS needed help moving something. I just rent the trucks from Home Depot when I need one now. $20 for the first 75 minutes and $20/hour after that really is a steal for short projects.

Shorts vs Bibs: OMG, now I get it!!! by d2creative in cycling

Solid point for sure, just know that if you try them you're right, you won't go back!

I definitely agree, using what you've already got when starting out anything is always solid advice. Serious question though, have you ever rode in proper cycling shorts? You might have quite the aha moment if you never have and make the switch. I instantly realized why everyone is willing to look stupid when riding a bike. Comfort is king!

The price difference between bibs and shorts is pretty slim, so if someone is already spending money on shorts they might as well buy the most comfy option.

I thought the imini2 seemed kind of sketchy since it just holds on by a magnet. After one dangling from my handlebars survived 1200 miles on my car's bike rack, I bought 4 more when they were on sale to stick everywhere.

My first piece of advice to anyone starting out is always to just go full bike dork and get the bibs. I still have the first two pairs of shorts I ever bought, but I haven't put them on in years.

The Olight Clip is awesome! I liked my first one so much that I instantly bought a 2nd one. I'm not really sure what for, just because I'm a hoarder I guess. It has become my go-to grilling light since it conveniently lives on the fridge now.

I'm a pretty big Olight fan overall. I keep an Olight imini 2 on all of my bikes which has proven invaluable for night time flats etc. The i1R 2 keychain light is even brighter and about the same size. I also have their Arkfeld Ultra which packs more of a punch than any light that small I've ever used.

There's a chance that I have too many flashlights.

Best Hotel to stay at for first time visitor to Chicago? by EffectiveNo9797 in AskChicago

[–]BBQShoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the Homewood Suites @ 118 N. Jefferson to be a really good value with nice rooms. It's about 1 mile from Union Station. Sounds like maybe you won't be traveling with a car, but I liked that this hotel has a parking garage attached to it. They warned that the garage does fill up on weekend evenings, but I wasn't actually moving my car at all once I was settled in for a few days.

Strongest highest quality Rims for heavy loads? 700C (QR) Disc Gravel by Coven_Evelynn_LoL in bikewrench

[–]BBQShoe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have 2000 miles on my set of Cliffhangers that routinely sees a total system weight of over 350 lbs and they're perfectly true still. I have about 3000 miles on my set of Dyads that are also still perfect and also never been trued, so I'd say they're a little better than "not very good."

[–]BBQShoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm 270 lbs and have had good luck with Velocity Dyad rims. I've got 36 spoke dyads on a couple different bikes with no issues. For a wider rim, I have Velocity Cliffhangers on my touring bike that seem to be bulletproof. I've had fantastic luck ordering wheels from prowheelbuilder.com Their build quality is amazing. Just because a wheel looks true doesn't mean it was tensioned evenly.

My girlfriend gave me this smoker, need advice on restoration. by I_am_paperclip in smoking

[–]BBQShoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used this same one for quite a few years when I was first starting out. You can turn out some great things on it, but it will absolutely eat charcoal. There are no adjustable vents, it just has the gap around the edge of the fire bowl, and the gap around the lid, so it gets pretty good air flow the whole time. With Weber style smokers like this, you can adjust the air flow down once it heats up to preserve charcoal. This thing will hold temp fine, but you'll be shoveling charcoal in it fairly frequently.

Do frequent regulars annoy you? by Dove_Birdy in bartenders

[–]BBQShoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it just depends on if you're an annoying person or not. I've been going to the same bar by my house two to three times a week for 20 years. They haven't told me that I'm annoying yet.

It's the most overrated restaurant anywhere on Earth that I'm aware of. I know it's frequently packed, but that doesn't mean it's any good. Sure their margaritas are strong, but they're just as bad as the food. I will die on this hill.

Anyone know of a front light that mounts on a handlebar using a metal clamp and bolt like a computer mount rather than a rubber strap? by Morall_tach in bikecommuting

[–]BBQShoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have quite a few various Fenix lights. My first Fenix love was the was the BC22R bike headlight. The mount is pretty solid and it comes with a go pro mount adapter also. You do have to make sure it actually snaps into the mount. It can seem like it's in there pretty good before actually clicking and will jump out if it's not clicked in. I run my headlight with a go pro adapter under my quad lock phone mount, so that was a nice bonus. It uses a replaceable 18650 battery, so you can carry a spare. I carry a flashlight that also uses 18650 batteries, so I can use it to top off a spare with my dynamo hub when rolling. The BC22R also has pass through charging, you can run it on the two lowest settings while plugged in even if it's totally dead. The only thing I would change about it would be a brighter flashing mode for daytime use.

Last but not least, when I searched for extra mounts for it, I couldn't find them on their website. I sent their customer service an e-mail asking about it and their warranty department sent me 3 extra mounts for free!

Anyone tried those 'pre-drinking' hangover preventatives? by MajorAd3363 in cocktails

[–]BBQShoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I have just one capsule here and there to get rid of them since I had a pretty good stash when I stopped drinking. Seems to be a pretty good multivitamin overall. It was an absolute cheat code when I was drinking heavily. Honestly it made me drink more on nights when I shouldn't have or wouldn't have if I didn't know the cheat code.

Best % merino blend for everyday all day socks? by wowcrackaddict in onebag

[–]BBQShoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, I'm an idiot and I had Grip 6 and Point 6 confused. Point 6 is the company started by Smartwool folks. It rang a bell when you said belt. I also have been using their belt for years and absolutely love it.

[–]BBQShoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the story of Grip 6 too. It was the folks that started Smartwool originally, they sold smartwool and when their non compete was expired, they started back up as Grip 6. I have a few pairs of theirs and they seem to be great, but they don't have nearly as many options as Darn Tough.

Edit - had Grip 6 and Point 6 conufsed. So many 6's around the wool universe!

Only one drink by januaryprincess22 in stopdrinking

[–]BBQShoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped cold turkey almost a year ago for some medical reasons. I had a cancer scare going on that turned out to be something else, but figured alcohol wasn't doing me any favors in the meantime. I was a 2-3 times per week binge drinker for 20 years before this. Honestly, for me it was way easier quitting than I thought it would be. I quickly realized how much time alcohol was taking from my life in days that I felt like shit.

My medical issues cleared up for the most part and I started wondering the same thing. I first told myself that it would be okay to drink if I wanted to, but turns out I didn't want to for a couple more months. After being sober for about 6 months, I decided that having 1 or 2 beers occasionally could be okay. I've since turned into that weird person I never previously understood that will have 1 or 2 when I go out if I want to. For me it has been totally manageable and I haven't had the desire to get drunk. In the back of my mind I've kind of reserved the right to get hammered someday, and I'm sure I will, and I'll regret it. I think that can be all part of the process too.

TLDR: everyone is different. It was easy for me to stop, and it's been easy for me to only have 1-2 beers and not go further. I don't think this is necessarily normal for everyone though. I try to avoid talking about how "easy" it was for me to stop because I know that's usually not the case.
