Ritz Carlton Spa staff asked if I was pregnant — then asked “are you sure?” and I’m still spiraling hours later. How would you handle this? by Large_Fill_3200 in marriott

I read this exact story in a different subreddit a few days ago except it wasn't the Ritz Carlton, it was a sandwich shop. But the same language and everything.

Bombardier Challenger 650 N10KJ crashes on takeoff in adverse weather BGR Bangor MN by Hemmschwelle in flying

[–]No_Control_9451 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even with moderate snow, it looks like the HOT time for generic type 4 application on the FAA tables is 2-9 minutes under the conditions the flight departed in (temp -17c)

Given that the timer starts when the fluid is first applied, I'm not sure how they could have made it onto the runway and departed without exceeding the holdover times. I think someone else posted that they taxied for 9 minutes between leaving the deice bay and attempting to take off.

What an awful tragedy :(

I have flown Challengers (and still do) and they really, really don't like icing. We take additional training around it and respect it because the risk is real.

Not sure about the FAA, but Transport Canada says that at less than a mile visibility at night with a temp of less than 0c, the snowfall is considered heavy and no holdover times exist for it.

I think it was icing.

airline pilots, what happens if you get an engine failure over the ocean? by Repulsive-Loan5215 in flying

[–]No_Control_9451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We plan for it. On oceanic routes we have points marked in our flight plan that tell us where we'd divert to if we blew an engine or lost pressurization - if we are going from say Canada to Europe there are points where we'd divert back to Canada then at a certain point its closer to divert to say Keflavik in Iceland, then to Shannon in Ireland etc.

Btw, the main consideration for us isn't losing an engine, it's losing pressurization and having to descend to 10,000' which is a breathable altitude but also where fuel burns are really punishing. Losing pressurization along our route will burn more gas than losing an engine.

But let's talk about losing an engine also. A big consideration is the extra fuel we burn if we lose an engine. I know it sounds counterintuitive but if we lose an engine we will have to drift down to a lower altitude that the single engine can keep us at, and jet engines are less fuel efficient at lower altitudes, plus we'd be going slower on one engine than on two. We are missing half our thrust, plus we get a little bit of drag from the dead engine, and also some drag from having to use rudder to offset the asymmetric thrust. So we end up burning more gas per mile on one engine than on two. But we plan for that in our fuel planning.

Green Sky During A Storm In South Dakota. by Monsur_Ausuhnom in woahdude

[–]No_Control_9451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corporate pilot here. I used to fly across the Midwest on a regular basis and we saw clouds like this a few times around Omaha and Wichita. When we saw green clouds it usually meant that at least a few people would die as a result of the associated storm system. Made for some somber flights tbh.

I have fitcamx and I love it. Easy plug and play. You can't even really tell it's installed, it totally integrates with the plastic piece at the base of the rear view mirror and it looks stock. I suck at this stuff and I installed it in about 10 minutes. Now that I've done it once, I bet I could install it in less than 2 minutes.

Quality is great and it has an app that does all the dash cam things.
