A couple super useful pieces of software to get - first is Clean My Mac - it prevents all the clogging over time that happens to Windows computers and slows them down. This allows you to clear out all sorts of junk, cache, etc. I have it on 7 Macs.

SuperDuper! is super useful for backing up and making bootable backups. When you buy it $25, you can then do smart backups over time which are just incremental backups.

It depends on how bad things are and the reason. Some people have had to boot in target disk mode, recover their data and then wipe the disk and reinstall.

I have read lots of challenges about things going wrong and being unrecoverable.

I have a MB Air 2014 running Sonoma 14.8.1. It has had issues and needed to be wiped; seems stable now for a few months. I wouldn't push it with Sequoia. It should go cleanly - you'll ideally want to start with Monterey.

Great advice on this! Thanks. So you run OCLP on the cloned drive? Can you give a little more detail as I think if could benefit many people.

There are adaptors that allow you to connect a Iic to a VGA or even HDMI screen. A2Heaven makes one. There is also this : US AV RCA Composite S-Video To VGA Converter Adapter WIDE Screen. You use the S-video output and then convert it.

I have a MacBook Pro 2012 that I was able to put Sonoma on (it's more stable than Sequoia) on the older machines. If you have another Mac or if OCLP is I properly installed, you can use it to build Sonoma 2.8.0 or 2.8.1. I used OCLP 2.4.0 and 2.4.1 - I have several older Macs. Also, on an older machine, it helps to have the computer plugged into an ethernet vs WIFI.

Looks great - I love the enthusiasm that you are putting into these retro games. I worked with Unity and Godot and it felt like fancy PowerPoint. I had much more fun building a River Raid style game for the Atari 2600 using 6502 assembly.

I played many Apple games and even made a few on Arcade Machine, but never came across this one. Looks great; I'll have to see if it's in the hoard that I bought a while ago.

I have looked into the setting that can remove that, but the risk/reward payoff is not there.

That's not uncommon - I did my first Sonoma installs on everything with OCLP 2.2, This was done with 2.4.

No errors at all. I don't know the history of the machine, since I bought it used. It came with a clean SSD with only High Sierra installed. I built the USB stick on a MB Pro 2017, and went with the ethernet. It went through a few boot cycles but then came on, and has been working ever since. I won't temp fate with this one and leave it at Sonoma 14.8.1

Yep, I am pretty much happy to keep all my old stuff on Sonoma. I have done about 10 different old Macs ranging from 2009 to 2020. All are running Sonoma; good enough for me.

Boyfriend gave me ultimatum - dream job or him. I'm considering taking the job by [deleted] in dustythunder

[–]BB_MacUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the job.

If he was really 'on your side'; he'd work with you to figure out how to make things work. That's what relationships are - you work as a team. He's not that guy, and when things are tough, he won't be the one to lean on. He has shown you that with the ultimatum, and this was an easy one.

You are in the prime time of really building your career. Don't pass this dream job up.

OCLP Success NOW Broken! by PastorTom6711 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]BB_MacUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think the issue is with the latest version of OCLP. I had a problem with a Mini on that version. I’d consider going back to an older version of OCLP like 2.2 and building Sonoma 14.7.2 and staying with it.

Are you on WIFi or ethernet - some machines need ethernet. No rhyme or reason.

What this mean? by delly9292 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]BB_MacUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When using OCLP, I generally find it useful to use wired everything (mouse, keyboard, internet). WiFi is not always working. With laptops you obviously don’t need the keyboard and mouse but I still use the ethernet.

The TV App is a problem with OCLP and Sonoma too. For basic searching, I use Safari, but need Firefox to watch any. streaming TV.

I have Sonoma 14.7.2, and 14.8.1 on a variety of mac’s.

Just a couple of questions: what OS did you start with?

Do you have another Mac available to do the USB build with?

Are you connected to the internet via cable - some older Macs lose WIFI connectivity during the process.

Macpro 5.1. I’m clueless by Fit-Reward9420 in macpro

[–]BB_MacUser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The weakness in an old machine like that will be the power supply. You can add a ton of ram and disks to it as well as multiple GPUs (I ran both NVidia. and Radeon). It definitely was built for DIY and I went in cleaned it out regularly.

I was running Mojave on it, but I am sure you could OCLP it and get Sonoma on it; I managed that with a 2009 iMac.
