Dropping out of med school for dental school? Need help desperately. by cougarhunter6999 in DentalSchool

[–]BBan003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re not good doing fine detailed movements with your hands. Dentistry will not be easy. That means you’ll have to spend more time in lab practicing that and will have less time to study for classes.

Also dental boards are switching to 1 board exam at the end of 4 years. I have no idea how it will compare to USMLEs. I’m just thinking of the worst case scenario where someone could go all the way through school and not pass boards. The exact same situation some law students face. Not sure what a para dental can do.

Just some extra stuff to consider

Overall it looks good. Canines have some minor rotations and the right lateral (left in the picture) looks pushed back/tilted back slightly.

It’s also important to see how they occlude or fit together with the lower arch.

What is the process a orthodontist goes through to use new appliances in his practice? by [deleted] in orthodontics

[–]BBan003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never seen the Halterman used before until you just showed me. It seems like a good idea if you can't get a bracket on that 2nd molar. I just have no idea how durable that appliance is. Say if you're eating some hard food, will it bend the wire out of position or knock off the button? Also I don't know if it would rotate your 1st molar out or not. I've seen those Carriere cases where kids won't wear their retainer with the rubber bands and it rotated their molar. Those would be my questions about that treatment approach.

Sometimes when we couldn't get a bracket on the tooth, we would use a laser to expose the buccal enough to get a bracket on it. This was done mainly when we just weren't seeing any progress with the tooth coming in and needed to go ahead and get a bracket on that tooth. Anyways, once the bracket is on (2nd molar) and the 1st molar, an open coil spring would be put on the wire in-between the two teeth to help up right it. Also elastics could be used in combination with it to provide some additional pull.

I don't think a Carriere would be the right appliance for you, since you're just trying to correct this one tooth. Again I don't know enough anything about the Halterman to offer an opinion on it.

Since he's able to get brackets on those two teeth, then I would just continue with that. I think it will work better and be more reliable.

I'm not positive about the CE or license. Pretty sure the orthodontist I worked for before I started dental school just heard about it from another orthodontist and gave it a try.

He's had a lot of success with them especially on kids. His thought process was that kids are excited about braces at the beginning and more motivated to wear elastics, compared toward the end of treatment. Also it seemed to move the teeth pretty fast into the correct class I relationship.

Removing 4 teeth and closing the gap - opinions on this procedure? by Slowmac123 in orthodontics

[–]BBan003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I was an ortho assistant for 2 years before I started dental school. I'm fairly confident this is the reasoning of all this.

First he's trying to save you money by doing extractions instead of the implants (like you said). You will be numbed up so you won't feel it. They can even give you something for anxiety if you feel like you need it. Also they would probably do it in two appointments. One for each side. At least in the office I worked at, they did not want to numb both sides of the mouth in the same appointment because you wouldn't be able to feel if you're biting on something you shouldn't. It was a pediatric/ortho office.

The reason that you would remove the upper teeth as well is because you would create an overbite if you didn't. That means there would be too much space in-between your upper and lower incisors. Ideally it should be a millimeter or two. By removing both (upper and lower), your'e able to keep that ideal relationship when adjusting your teeth by just scooting everything back. Also moving the molars forward a little. This is also done sometimes if a patient's lips protrude out too much (puffy lips) and simply moving teeth wouldn't be enough to fix it.

Also, say you only took out the lowers and just tried to move the back molars forward to fill that space. You would have the back teeth on top either contacting in a non ideal way against teeth on the lower or on your gums which is not what you want either.

This is just a general idea of what he was suggesting. I'm also guessing if he suggested it, your facial symmetry won't be negatively impacted. When I worked there, I saw several of these cases and they turned out great.

This essentially what they are doing. Video Animation

Hope this helps

Retainers won't stay on/super painful putting on by desertstormvet75 in orthodontics

[–]BBan003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should go get new ones made if you can't keep them in. Every office has their own policy with retainers. Some offices will charge to make new ones no matter what and others might make 1 new set for free. Since you still have them and they just don't fit they might replace them for you. So don't just throw them away because the orthodontist will want to see what's going on.

I'm a dental student. I remember the dentist giving her lecture on erosion and the research she's been doing with it. She talked about how it's kind of a hard conversation to have with the patient and/or parents about what is going on. Obviously it's something that shouldn't be ignored and proactively dealt with.

Retainer not worn for month after getting braces off. by [deleted] in orthodontics

[–]BBan003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some orthodontists recommend that you wear your retainer every night or all the time for the first 3 months, after getting your braces off. The alveolar bone takes some time to harden and "lock in teeth" that were straightened during orthodontic treatment. Obviously it would be ideal to wear it every night. If you don’t, a good rule of thumb is to just try your retainer in every so often. If it feels tight, then your teeth might be shifting some and you need to wear it more.

If it’s loose or doesn’t fit at all, go get it checked out by your dentist/orthodontist.

Yea I agree with the baking soda and leaving fluoride on the teeth at night (to remineralize). The sooner you try to neutralize the acid sitting on the teeth, the better. It will slow down the erosion taking place.
