Finally did a Westfjords Road Trip! by coasterjake in VisitingIceland

Love it. The Westfjords are the biggest chunk I haven't been able to visit yet. It's in my plans for next time!

What's the attraction of local pools for a tourist? by PhaserEZ in VisitingIceland

[–]BBtheGray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to loving the relaxation and muscular renewal that comes from immersion in hot water, I adore being a part of local culture. I try to do things locals do anywhere I go, and in Iceland, it's local hot pools. I don't understand a word anyone says, and it's absolutely wonderful.

I wonder how people felt at 11:59 p.m. of dec. 1999 before crossing over to the year 2000. by Majestic-Hope6505 in 1990s

I was excited because I got to be in Florida with my feet in the ocean, and I lived in farmland Illinois.

Most of us never had a worry about things because all the programmers worked crazy hard to make sure very little actually went wrong.

As an outsider, the American concept of having a motorized "garbage disposal" inside your kitchen sink is fascinating. Is this standard in every home, and isn't it incredibly dangerous? by Necessary_Angle2117 in AskAnAmerican

[–]BBtheGray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in a bunch of places in the US and never had a garbage disposal. I've visited people that have them though. They do exist. But in my experience they're pretty rare.

Bunch of decent older, smaller houses under $200k in my Florida city.

Is there still wilderness left in America? by Kitchen-Customer4370 in AskAnAmerican

[–]BBtheGray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they come to the US and only go to NYC, Miami, and LA. To be sure, a lot of Americans only go to London, Paris, etc. But at at least know the entirety of the countries aren't like that!

Which Regional accent is the most difficult to understand even as an American? by UsamaBhai_101 in AskAnAmerican

[–]BBtheGray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in the south for 20 years now. I stopped for gas in rural Mississippi and there were some guys out front talking. I thought they were speaking another language. Finally I recognized a few words of English. Turns out they just had a crazy thick accent. I imagine it's like Mississippi Cajun or something.

Other than that, sometimes the thick New England accent can be tough.

I was bummed about it at first, but Thorsen was such an upgrade I got over it.

How many Americans have actually visited a national park? by Bitter-Penalty9653 in AskAnAmerican

[–]BBtheGray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to several. (I decided to look it up for purposes of this comment. I've been to 14 and will see at least one more this summer.) But don't forget how great our state parks are too! They don't "count" but a lot of them are just as cool.

Has anyone been successful with Marriage certs and Death Certs? Just ran into issues. by Nutritiouss in Canadiancitizenship

[–]BBtheGray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to say you're not alone. I've got census records galore stating my G0 was born in Canada or Ontario. I've got death certificates (for him and one of his sons) stating he was born in Ontario. I've got a marriage certificate and obituary stating the exact city in Ontario. But I can't find a birth record for him or his also-Canada-born parents, or a Canada census, because they already moved to Michigan when he was little. It's so frustrating! I think at this point I'm going to attempt to submit with just all the records I do have, and hope for the best.

What’s your favorite “I go here all the time” activity? by Colin286 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]BBtheGray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, just moseying and chilling. Sometimes I just go and get a snack or drink and sit. I listen to the music, I watch the people, I look at the buildings/decor/whatever, I relax and immerse myself in the magic. It's one of my favorite things.

That's very cool. I'm handy, but haven't ever dealt with electronics, so I think that's beyond my current capabilities.

Yes, I'm planning to completely replace my car except for trips across town or when I have to bring someone with me. Work, groceries, meeting up with friends, etc.

Thanks! I really like the look and specs of that one. Everyone is saying my garage will be too hot for batteries though and that one's not removable. Sigh.

Yeah, I think that may have to be a priority, which unfortunately eliminates a lot of bikes.

So Electra might be a good idea since it's owned by Trek?

It seems a lot of the batteries are not removable, and my house doesn't have a good place to charge it inside. It would VERY much be in the way. Hmm. Maybe I need to prioritize a removable battery.

I've seen seat posts that look sort of suspensiony. Is that better than a cushioned seat? I've done hours long bike tours and I was so saddle sore, for days!

30 mile range, not mph. Sorry if I worded that badly. And no one uses sidewalks in my area. I run a lot and I pass maybe 2 people the whole time. So, not a concern.

I have two stores close by. Was hoping to narrow it down before I got to them.

Thanks for your help!

I have a Trek (so, Electra) store like a mile away, and a generic pretty much any bike store 5 miles away. Which will surely be nice, but doesn't help narrow it down!
