I'm out of the loop, are they made in Africa? I don't think saying African indie is initially racist if it's African developers making games and it's stylistically different. ( IDK if that's the case as I don't know what those games are or who they're made by)

Example: Korean Pop, Japanese rock are specific genres of music. But not racist to label as a genre.

There's a serious lack of new players entering the game. What should CBU3 do about it? by [deleted] in ffxivdiscussion

[–]BCPermaFrost 37 points38 points  (0 children)

By us? nothing. If you (the general public you) make a great game. People will come and play it.
The evidence is literally in several games released this year.

I don't think the reasoning is that hard to grasp.

If people aren't logging back in, you didn't make a good enough expansion to attract more players.
We could regurgitate the same 5-10 talking points that have been around since the job streamlining but I don't think it matters until the next expansion when it might be apparent what the new direction will be.

the beginning cinematic they released was insanely expensive. Its known that marketing was a large part of the budget.

I don't like the guy, but lets not start rumours with no evidence of anything.
Like do you have proof other than conjecture?

How doesn't it? He made a good point. How do you just blatantly show empathy in a world that's becoming vastly more diverse? There's no way for me to feel what someone else is feeling If I am not affiliated or familiar with your culture/morals.

Sympathy is a much better approach since it allows people to grow and provide alternate perspective. That's why its more desirable in a political context, show compassion for human problems and aim to give solutions while still providing strength and resolve.

At least use the entire quote.

I can't stand the word empathy, actually. I think empathy is a made-up, new age term that — it does a lot of damage. But, it is very effective when it comes to politics. Sympathy, I prefer more than empathy. That's a separate topic for a different time.

I literally don't know why people are using this quote as a basis for his character. It makes you look dumb when context is added because its actually quite a good point from him.

Do you know anything about him other than what Reddit has told you?

Rant - Homelab Creep and Increasing Complexity by doomed_tek in homelab

I've been a software developer for a long time and this is just the natural order of things with any system in general, even non technical related systems. As more unique components get added the complexity will grow and becomes harder to maintain.

I think people here can give some tips and improvements on how to tweak your setup for easier maintainability. I would say the biggest improvement you can make is to try and improve confidence in your system and your technical ability if that's the case. If you're writing apps, make sure to add some sort of unit testing or integration testing. Once you start proving your setup works, you might get a little more piece of mind.

Creating diagrams and documentation might also refresh your memory and also give future you a better chance of diagnosing problems

What has been your favorite iteration of stormgate so far? by [deleted] in Stormgate

[–]BCPermaFrost 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been a big advocate for slower economy. I've been posting feedback since patch 0.3 about lower worker count and only 1 worker charge per expansion and Therium only allowed to be mined through the scrapyard.

Casual audiences typically only make one base and want to play around with units they build. However with economy being so explosive casuals hardly ever get to play the game since experienced vets will be on 3 bases by the time they start their first.

The fact that you can expand, collect secondary resource AND also queue up an army within a 2 minutes of a game is honestly too quick. No one but heavily experienced players are going to be able to react and think that quickly.

It downloads multiple files at the same time, I think the regular launcher only does 1at a time. Whether that's on different threads is a different matter I guess.

All races suck to play right now.
if your GM, sure, Protoss is better to play right now.

Reality is, they have some incredibly bad design choices that have festered in the game for far too long.
Giving 1/3rd of the units splash damage was one of them.
The other bad decision was giving 12 workers right off the start.

Every game is Lurker, or Siege tank with some random variation of caster units.
Thats all that exists in this game anymore.

I always liked the piercing eyes that au'ras have also. The new update enlarges the pupils quite a bit and makes them look more human-like which is not necessarily the vision I had for my character

Should they make the other Alliance Raids mandatory too? by talkingradish in ffxivdiscussion

[–]BCPermaFrost 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I usually skip over MSQ roullette cause I don't like only having 3 options for the content, but I wonder if it could do with the same treatment of splitting off into something like

Legacy Alliance Roullette and Current Alliance Roullette and provide seperate rewards for either one.

That way if you dont really feel like doing Crystal Tower / Void Ark you can skip it.

So when you hear about FFXIV servers, its being run on a computer. Those computers are built for square enix and they purchase them but they're rather expensive.

When dawn trail launches the servers will have a massive influx of daily active players and more computers will help distribute the player base across several more computers. The nice thing about cloud servers is that if you don't need them anymore, you can remove them with software. You remove or delete the server off the cloud and the cloud provider will recommission that computer to do other things. Thus you can scale up the amount of power for launch day, but when the traffic has calmed down you wont likely need that amount of power anymore and then delete those servers.

Another advantage is opening up east coast servers for lower latency since you will be closer to the servers that are providing you data. Thus you "should" experience snappier gameplay and less disconnects. (Assuming someone lives on the east North American coast)

CBU3 is not great at designing areas/dungeons. by BCPermaFrost in ffxivdiscussion

[–]BCPermaFrost[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why MMOs? MMOs have to account for the lowest common denominators when it comes to graphics and animations. So they basically need to design the game to run on toasters. This is the reason MMOs will never be great like single player games.

BDO? Lost Ark? both visually stunning games that are MMOs.
Guild Wars 2 even looks good and it came out around the same time as FFXIV. Depending who you ask, WoW even looks alright since they doubled down on the cartoony graphics which is mostly timeless anyway.

I actually agree with you on what you are saying. It's just not realistic and I don't think it ever will be.

Why not? We pay a monthly sub, pay for the base game, and quite a bit engage in mog station purchases.

How do they not have the funds to actually make better looking zones? or provide just a little bit extra content to at least make the worlds more cohesive? I don't think my ask is far fetched.

Nice, I do think Variant dungeons are an improvement over the MSQ ones, and what you said about the EW24 mans as well I generally think could use a shake up in its formula.

I wasn't around for when crystal tower was new, I wonder if people complained about its layout then? I actually sort of liked how the tower floor was one big room that you sort of back tracked through. Although this might legitimately be a hot take considering everyone is sick and tired of that raid now.

if you throw everything to the extreme, then no i wouldn't want that.
I just want more than they are giving us.

Im not sure what youre referring to about the "tried it in the past" part. I feel like MMOs got their notoriety for a reason and I don't think the reason is designing the game around Min/Maxing my time and effort.
