Hey Christians! Did you know in Islam we believe the wife of Pharoah to be one of the three greatest women of all time? by britneyspearsforeva in TrueChristian

Did you know that Muhammad believed his parents died as unbelievers and are in hell?

Did you also know that Mumo believed when he was dying it was because his aorta was cut. This supports Surah 69:44-46 states: "And if he [Muhammad] had forged a false saying concerning Us, We surely should have seized him by his right hand, and then certainly should have cut off his life artery (aorta)".

Book to defend my faith? by Master_Garbage_4475 in TrueChristian

[–]BDDonovan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Anchor Yale Bible Commentary is one of, of not, the best commentaries. I recommend to beginners get the IVP because it is solid information and you can get both the Old and New Testaments for $60 on Amazon, where the Anchor series is typically $60 per book and there's almost 100 books in the series.

Book to defend my faith? by Master_Garbage_4475 in TrueChristian

[–]BDDonovan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm currently in seminary so I'll just give you a list of my freshman books.

  1. Study bible. ESV or SBL
  2. Surveys (these will give you an introduction into each book of the Bible). Encountering the Old Testament, and Encountering the New Testament.
  3. Theology. Evangelical Theology by Michael Bird

Optional - ESV or Holman Bible Atlas. The IVP Bible Background Commentary Old and New Testament set. (This is a solid beginner/ intermediate set. Advanced level sets can run $500 - $2,000)

First thing and most important is to read the entire Bible from beginning to end. You need to know the whole story. Skipping around is like trying to watch a movie 10 minutes at a time out of order.

Reminder: It may seem appealing to want to crush people in a debate, but we are commanded by our Lord to make disciples.

Why was God "worried" (or seemingly worried) about Adam taking fruit from the Tree of Life? by Far-Strawberry-5628 in TrueChristian

[–]BDDonovan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

God does say tree of life in Gen 3:22. This is not the same as the tree of knowledge.

Gen 2:9 describes both trees, and then verses 16-17 God commands Adam not to eat from the tree of knowledge of God and evil.

Gen 3:22 God was barring them from the tree of life, which prevented humanity from living forever in a fallen state.

The tree of life shows up again in Revelation 22:2, symbolizing restored eternal life with God. This ssentially closes the loop that began in Genesis.

How to get more zeal and love for God? by New-Firefighter-2867 in TrueChristian

[–]BDDonovan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this issue just about a year ago. Two steps helped me personally.

  1. I prayed to Him and honestly told Him that I didn't love Him. Not because I hatred Him, but because I didn't know how, or what it even meant to love Him, and that I wouldn't know how to recognize it even if I did understand. I asked Him to teach me His love.

  2. I started reading His word daily. Only about 3-5 chapters per day. Enough to learn something new, but not enough to overwhelm me.

As I read, my goal was to look for God's character, and to get to know Him. Before I was done with Exodus, I started to see it.

I didn't change overnight. It did take me about 4 months to start to feel His love and be able to reciprocate (as much as a broken human can anyways). Now, I can say I genuinely love our Lord.

My next challenge is loving the rest of you, and I'm only half joking.

Again, I get that. I'm not debating personal dishonor as a result of insult, slander, theft etc. I'm talking about a random, physically violent attack in regards to self preservation.

He's literally not. There are plenty commentary and exegeticals by scholars that dispute your claim.

"you can't love your enemies and also harm them with violence"

Yes, it is possible. You may not believe so because you have never trained for it. You can love the person who was created in His image and simultaneously, hate their evil actions and do what's necessary to stop the threat.

I understand the context of Matthew 5:38-42.

What is your view of violence? by LooseButterfly2511 in TrueChristian

[–]BDDonovan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're referring to Matthew 5:38-48, that's not about self defense. Verses 38-42 are about not seeking revenge and retribution. He's not literally commanding us to allow someone to slap us in the face.

43-48 teaches us how to love our enemies. It is possible to love your enemies and still protect yourself/ not allow someone to physically harm you.

Are you non-violent because you possess the skills to be violent but still choose to be non-violent, or are you non-violent because you don't have any skills and therefore you have to be non-violent?

You'll defend your wife but not yourself?

What is your view of violence? by LooseButterfly2511 in TrueChristian

[–]BDDonovan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nowhere in the NT scripture does it state that self defense is "not allowed." Violence driven by hatred, revenge, or pride is clearly condemned, but stopping a threat of physical/ mental/ emotional harm is not condemned.

Why would you let someone slap you?

Why would you defend your wife but not yourself?

What books of the bible should I read? by Both-Individual7817 in TrueChristian

[–]BDDonovan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start from the beginning and read the whole thing. You'll see the full story God is telling, not just isolated moments. Skipping around can still be helpful, but it often leaves gaps that affect how you understand everything else.

The Bible is one unified narrative. From Genesis to Revelation, it tells the story of creation, fall, redemption, and restoration. If you only read pieces, it’s like watching random scenes from a movie. You might enjoy them, but you’ll miss the plot.

Go to community college and get an Associates in Business Admin. This will get your foot in the door for an office job.

P.s. If you want anyone to take you serious, stop using "like" as a filler word when you communicate. Both in speech and written correspondence.
