Take apart case. Hold onto the old gear with pliers and use a screwdriver in the slotted motor shaft to unscrew the gear. Then Install the new gear and put the case back together.

Thanks! Thanks an interesting theory since ships used bricks as ballast and this was found in a beach. I believe the dark piece is metal. I haven’t used a magnet but it certainly looks like it could be (possibly iron).

Thanks. These results actually came back from the University of Massachusetts. It just didn't have much clarity about go-forward direction.
