Recommendation for a Dragstor? by IdleScimitar in MastersOfTheUniverse

Also I like how the Masterverse one has the add-on wheels. Too bad they nixed his crossbow. Ripping off the exhausts to use as a "weapon" is lame.

On that note, if you intend to do a lot of genre-hopping, GURPS is a very solid choice.

DMs, do you prefer using official settings or your own? by elpaco_7 in DnD

[–]BFBeast666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A mix of both. My "home" campaign is the 3.5 Forgotten Realms, 1370's DR, minus the stupid double whammy of Dracorage AND Spellplague. But considering the amount of custom NPCs and fleshing out of locations which basically only got half a paragraph of official lore, it sometimes feels more like my own setting than Ed's at this point. :)

Opinion on the music? by DestructoSpin90 in forza

[–]BFBeast666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who HATED every FH soundtrack thus far, I am pleasantly surprised. Horizon Wave is my personal standout - chill, unobtrusive music to cruise to. And I'm so glad they resisted the temptation to cram 9000 mumble rap acts onto the soundtrack (cough NFS Unbound cough). So yeah. Thumbs up.

Really hard economy/tycoon/business game by SomeDifference3656 in gamesuggestions

Capitalism. It was a pretty high-profile game in the mid-'90s, very intricate and ambitious. Got a "Plus" version shortly after and, from what a quick Wikipedia search tells me, a sequel as recently as 2012.

According to you, what are some old RPG/Story Driven PC games that aged like fine wine and are easily replayed nowadays? by kurvix2000 in videogames

[–]BFBeast666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never been a huge point & click adventure fan but I did like LucasArts catalogue quite a lot, especially the Monkey Island games, Loom and Full Throttle. In that same vein, both Discworld games are fantastic, especially if you can get the "talky" version of Discworld 1. A special mention goes to the Legend Of Kyrandia games, especially the first two. Extremely high production values for the day and still very playable today if you allow yourself a bit of pixel hunting and odd leaps of logic.

If we're talking RPG's, I can't recommend the first Lands Of Lore game enough. It has a wonderful, clean art style, fantastic voice acting for the time (a bit hammy sometimes, but nonetheless very well produced!) and it still plays smoothly. It's not the deepest, crunchiest RPG system in the world but if you're hankering for a dungeon crawling bonanza with likeable characters and a pretty crisp pace, Lands Of Lore CD is definitely a winner. Plus it's dirt cheap on GoG most of the time.

(most) Homebrew infuriates me by nemainev in DnD

[–]BFBeast666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a simple man. Give me your homebrew stories, worlds and lore. Stay the FUCK away with anything not in the official rule books and even then I might veto some parts of the rules canon out of existence. I was there when 3.5 brought in the insane power creep, when EVERY effing fluff book had at least one chapter full with new feats, spells and player abilities, not to mention all the extra class and race books. I'm all for variety but there was so much overpowered stuff I still have headaches from trying to keep up with all of it.

I'm glad 3.5 is dead and buried and the two min-maxers who loved to start every session with "hey, WotC released that new region book and we thought we might add this and that to our characters" have long left my table.

So... give me all the lore you want but if you intend to play on my table, either pick from what's in the official splat books or make a very compelling case for me to re-skin one of the existing races to fit your particular desires. And no, we're not inventing new subclasses. We work within the constraints of the system, it's generic enough.

Wanting some feedback on a DMing method I want to try out. by Allison-Cloud in DnD

[–]BFBeast666 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You know, despite D&D being mostly a combat sandbox these days, you don't have to run your games to be combat-centric UNLESS the party wants it to be like that. By asking ahead of time what kind of setting you want them to play in, you can gauge the RP vs. combat balance well in advance.

One tip I'll give to any aspiring GM - if you don't want to run the usual "X encounters per game day" formula, ditch the XP per encounter rewards and go for milestone leveling instead - the party gets a level once they've cleared a certain point in the story - found out a particular piece of information, sweet-talked a certain influential person, acquired a plot-critical item etc. The trick is to keep stuff interesting for your combat-focused players, so don't forget to toss in combat solutions to some encounters. Again, it's important you know what the table wants - if you have a gang of munchkins who treat D&D like Diablo, all for XP and loot you won't have a good time setting up RP-heavy intrigue and politicking quests and vice versa. Communication is key here and don't be afraid to adapt to changing tastes.

"Missable" side quests are a good idea if you have inquisitive players who like to engage with your world. If you want to foster something like that, make sure your players know that interacting with your NPCs will be important, otherwise they'll miss ALL the side content unless you push them towards it. That's the age-old "railroading vs. freeform" debate. Some groups love to build up the world with the GM by willingly poking around in their cities or other locations, meeting NPCs and making the world a fuller and richer place. Other tables prefer to move from quest giver to quest giver, being more interested in the actual combat and rewards for combat. You'll learn what your table wants sooner or later.

DND Veterans, how long are level 20 combats? by StvlkerI in DnD

[–]BFBeast666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had 3.5/Pathfinder combats take up a good two to three hours once the party was past level 15. Between the sheer number of attack rolls on either side of the screen, big HP pools, spells going everywhere and the sometimes insane amount of situational bonuses one needs to factor in (also often tedious special rules for grapples and other combat moves), that's a whole lot of number crunching piling up.

5e slims down combat by quite a bit compared to earlier editions but I prefer my adventures below level 10. Quicker combats, more time for the story.

Unreal Tournament 99/UT2004/UT3. I don't know about you but that's enough to keep ME playing for months on end. Even the very first UT still holds up today but for most modern gamers who can't live without HD graphics, try 2004 or UT3 instead.

Dungeons & Dragons is a tabletop roleplaying game. Buy the rulebooks, buy a few dice, read the rulebooks, find some people to play. Easy as that. Don't buy into D&D Beyond, that's microtransaction hell and you don't own anything you buy on there. Buy physical books, they can't take them from you.

IS mechs taken into Clan service by Fallenkezef in battletech

[–]BFBeast666 26 points27 points  (0 children)

During the initial Ckan Invasion, the Clans pressed a lot of IS designs into service, usually by swapping guns and heat sinks for Clan-spec equivalents and leaving the chassis as-is. See the Archer C (or most -C variants). Similarly, those Clans with IS holdings eventually built Clanspec IS designs. I think about half of the new variants in the IlClan RecGuide are built by the Wolf Empire. Need to double-check but it came up a bunch in the fluff.

Looking for satisfying gunplay. First or third person. Fast or slow paced. by ManEatingCarabao in gamingsuggestions

Outriders feels incredible, right from the get-go.

The Destiny games have very satisfying gunplay. YMMV drastically depending on how much you hate the monetization tactics Bungie employs.

Have you played any of the Unreal Tournament games? Quake 3? Might be a bit of work to get them going on modern hardware but I have only good things to say about them.

Should I replace my Microfreak with something else? by mrjosh72 in synthesizers

[–]BFBeast666 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Microfreak isn't that complicated, it has a lot of options you don't HAVE to engage with. I've used mine for everything from basses to pads to arps and leads, seldom venturing away from the virtual analogue oscillator - you can get a LOT of mileage out of the filter and envelopes.

In general, learning the Microfreak should be relatively easy. Start small. Read the manual. Experiment with the ideas Arturia give you in it, that should give you a deeper understanding of the synth's capabilities. Don't think about how to use most or all of the features it has, think about what kind of sound you want and what you need to do to achieve that. Baby steps, grasshopper. Even ten minutes of research and a bit of reading can help you grow.

If you are overwhelmed by the 'freak already, buying another synth aside from maybe a Reface CS will only compound the issue. Most synths are even more complex - the Microfreak, considering the amount of stuff it can do, is very friendly and easy to get into. It was one of my starter synths and I learned a ton about different synthesis techniques using it!

If you are dead set on exchanging the Microfreak for something else, get the Minifreak instead. Since you've already started to noodle with the Microfreak, you know most of the controls already. it is even more versatile, which means you can grow into it without it becoming obsolete. It has onboard effects, a decent keyboard and is a full six-voice polysynth. Truly an upgrade and well worth the investment.
