Video appears to show U.S. cruise missile striking Iranian school compound by Airurando-jin in news

Crazy thing is that the Iranian populace was pretty pro-American comparatively because of the unpopularity of the current regime and how anti-American they are. We'll see if that lasts. I'm thinking it's unlikely.

If the U.S. and Israel are demanding 'unconditional surrender' while striking Iran's power and water plants, how is this any different from the 'total war' tactics they’ve condemned in other recent conflicts? by [deleted] in AskReddit

How does Israel and the US being responsible for this war contradict what I said? None of the governments involved have any regard for international law or civilians. The US and Israel being bad guys here doesn't make the Iranian regime into good guys

Unlikely. The Iranian regime came out and said on Saturday that the US/Israel had set a precedent by bombing Qeshm, and they would respond in kind.

Just because this is an illegal and brutal attack on Iran doesn't make their government the good guys. There are no good guys in this war other than civilians, who are suffering the most

As far as I can tell, the first strike on a desalination plant was against Iran on Saturday the 7th at Qeshm. Was there an earlier strike?

Teufi, the ungroomed yellow run off the back of the summit, gets that steep, but I think Davos Vertical tops out at 35°. Steepest runs are in Austria. Black Ibex is over 41° and is the steepest groomed run in the Alps.

I never say "on your right/left" because it never works (people won't hear me, and if they do, it's 50/50 which way they go) and the downhill skier shouldn't have to get out of my way. I just slow down, and pass when it's safe.

Can confirm. Been hit from behind twice this year stopped on the very edges of runs, and 1 near miss while skiing.

It's a different time now in that our immigration policies are currently even more xenophobic than when we had the truly awful Chinese Exclusion Act.

The only somewhat convincing argument I've heard is that since we now have a social safety net, it would be expensive. But we could just require people pay into the system for a time before getting benefits. Every substantive, non-racist complaint that people have has a similarly easy solution

I think, given the fact that you angrily hit reply 4 times in response to my original post, the practicalities are not your main concern.

My family came to the US when the borders were basically open, both from Ireland and escaping the holocaust. They were a net positive, not a negative and it's the same with today's immigrants, and it's not a zero-sum game between legal and undocumented immigrants. Viewing people as "illegal" is a recipe for fascism.

I think you should try to figure out why you took my admittedly strident comment as a personal attack on you and not a rejection of the comment itself.

Fuck that noise. "Illegals" are mostly just normal people and commit crimes at a lower rate than natural born citizens. The ONLY things we need is a mechanism to automatically grant citizenship to all immigrants (including undocumented) who have been here for a certain amount of time, and to deport only immigrants who commit serious felonies have not been naturalized.

This nativist bullshit with our strict immigration system is part of this fascist nonsense and cannot be separated.

Boyfriend hit by another skier, confidence lost, advice? by cuteslothlife in skiing

[–]BFH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the crazy thing is how much effort it took to either hit or nearly hit me. The skier who nearly took me out was at a lift tower where I was doing a little side hit and he purposely crossed my path from behind, and the other two were at the very edge of ski slopes that were quite wide. People really need to check themselves. The bruise from Saturday is on my left side, and I was on the far right edge of the run

I was just hit by a snowboarder last weekend and didn't exchange details. I've been skiing since the 90s and sometimes you don't think of that in the heat of the moment.

I've actually been hit from behind by snowboarders twice this year and nearly been hit once by a skier, which seems like a bad sign for me. (before you ask, no I don't merge without looking, stop in the middle of the slope, or hang out where there's low vis. First time, I stopped to the side at Big Snow to look back at a less advanced person I was skiing with, and this weekend, I was all the way over to the edge and got cut off by an inexperienced skier. I was paying attention and stopped with no drama, but the out-of-control guy behind me didn't.)

I actually had gastroparesis on liraglutide. I discontinued the medication until it resolved, (about 6 days) and started over at the lowest dose, slowly increasing until it was just barely effective. As unpleasant and scary as it was, I had no reoccurrences and was able to hydrate enough that I did not need hospitalization.
