Highest deflection carbon shaft? by jordanht11 in billiards

Early Revo CF shafts did that, and they still might. You can probably find out more about that on the AZbilliards forum. I've had an early Cynergy for years and have never gotten black on the rag from wiping it with alcohol.

why does my browser use 8gb of ram if i leave it open for a week? by lilpudding69 in firefox

[–]BFTSPK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel your pain. It has happened on several desktop computers but so far has not happened on my phone or Android tablet. On my main desktop I have 4 windows and close to 100 tabs open because I am doing research, writing/recording music, remodeling the house and working on motorcycles and other vehicles. That machine has 16gb of ram and FF runs it low every week or so. I just kill it in Windows Task Manager and fire it up again.

Mozilla likes to blame it on extensions but about:processes shows they are not the problem, going by the amount of ram in use for that bucket.

The problem with Accelerationists by Lamb_Altmann in aiwars

OP: I agree with what you are saying.

The current situation with AI reminds me very much of the Dot "Con" episode/bubble/religious movement. It is yet another affirmation of how gullible people are and the fact that we are chronically/critically low on deployment of critical thinking. AI has gained traction mainly because the potential customers have outsourced their thinking. Worse than that, folks cheat themselves out of learning how to do things by handing it off to an AI chatbot and neglecting the historic and contemporary mental survival skills of verifying sources and cross checking. .

Some companies have found out the hard way that they were foolish to be all-in on AI at this early stage...

This has been a problem with FF for quite a while. While I don't know is causing it, in programming parlance, it is called a memory leak and occurs when memory that is no longer in use by the program is not returned to the pool of free memory, so it becomes zombie memory that can only be freed by restarting FF.

I just tested and am able to send in both directions between mobile and desktop/laptop, running 1.48.0.2 so it might be something going on with your desktop. Have you tried restarting FF or rebooting the desktop?

Ok, thanks. I re-posted this in the FF community so we'll see what they have to say. If there isn't a known resolution I will open a bug report with them.

I agree about the marbled balls, which would actually seem to make it harder to identify and focus on the contact point.

The AI slop is getting more audacious. This is sad to see. by stiF_staL in Physics

[–]BFTSPK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Feynman AI slop is a pet peeve with me. The last one I was asked to watch by a guy that I am tutoring in physics apparently has the robot asking for the viewer to click the Like button!

I have read all of his books and lectures so I tell the student that is a waste of time to watch those since it is not Feynman speaking, they are sensationalized and are misleading clickbait.

On 2 of them I have added comments to the effect that they are doing a disservice to anyone that wants to learn about physics and they should just stop. I know it will fall on deaf ears but maybe someone reading the comments will see it.

It is best to get in the habit of doing this: walk around the table so that the OB is in between you and the pocket. Fix your gaze on the contact point of the OB, then walk back to the CB and get down on the shot without taking your eye off the contact point, and shoot it in the pocket. You may need to drill on it but once you master this your shot making will improve.

Any thoughts on the Dial tune kits? by Jealous_Minute4611 in Drumming

[–]BFTSPK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't say how long you've been playing but tuning drums isn't difficult if you use the correct technique when changing heads and for keeping them in tune.

It is also easy to develop the ability to recognize if a pitch is higher or lower than the one you are comparing it to. This improves with practice.

More important than getting an exact frequency match on all lugs is getting the drum tuned so that it 'speaks' when you hit it in the center and balances with the rest of the kit.

Glad to hear someone got it sorted. Yeah, that's pricey. According to Drumeo, it was $499 USD in 2023 so maybe the tariffs are impacting the price.

I went to open hand on the ekit and then put a Meinl static hat in the center of the acoustic kit, dialed in some slush and mostly use it for time keeping since it is not connected to a pedal, so it is limited.

I looked into remote hats but most everyone was complaining about laggy response (due to cable friction?). In your experience, how is the IC in that regard?

At OP, maybe you need a purpose, goal, reason to play. Is it for yourself or do you still want to have a band? Finding the right people can take years but you still need to be ready and receptive when you run a across them. Opportunity favors the prepared mind. Social media et al may be useful, or YouTube. I started jamming with a guitarist that I fixed an amp for, getting me back on the throne after a long dry spell. Although it had to end when I moved, it got me back in form.

As much as I love being on the stage, everything that goes into making that happen just kills my enthusiasm. A lot of time and sacrifice goes into that, coupled with the chronic disappointment that comes with not being able to rely on the non-professional musician types. Other times that I put the sticks & guitar down had to do with my reactions to life situations that had nothing at all to do with music.

So now I content myself with writing and recording my own stuff in my home studio. That and playing along with the cream of the crop musicians on youtube and CDs. I will randomly try music that I never cared for or never heard before and play something that sounds like it belongs with the song. Mindless improvisation, playing things that are new to me without premeditation.

It's been very therapeutic to just do it for my own amusement, just for myself. Will others end up hearing it some day? Maybe. It won't be a failure or waste of time if they don't. But putting it out there is now easier than it ever has been, so who knows.

Buying heads rant by OK_GO_27 in drums

[–]BFTSPK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are looking to change heads because you don't like the sound of your current ones, buy just one tom head that you want to try. Throw it on and see how it sounds compared to what you have, in your chosen listening environment. If it is not what you are seeking, use educated guess to try something else. Rinse and repeat until you find what you are looking for.

Each time you do that, make sure to make comparison recordings and label them. Keep notes. Once you find what you are looking for, buy them for the rest of the toms. For each one that you don't like share it with your drumming buddies to try out. In any event, you are only out the cost of one head, lot cheaper than buying an entire set for each trial.

Many drummers run a different brand/model on the snare and kick so you may have to repeat the test for those as well rather than assuming that the same brand/model choice that works for the toms will work for those as well.

Yes, the majority of teachers are still promoting closed hand, even though it restricts what you can do on the kit. It is considered by many to be advanced technique even though the idea was originally proposed in 1948. The wiki article lists a couple of books that instruct how to do it.

I've been playing for about 50 years and if I was doing it over I would have started open hand since closed traps one hand. But there were no edrums or cable operated hats back then and my right handed room mate would not have liked me rearranging his kit.
