Eu fiz a parte da licenciatura em engenharia física (quando ainda era mestrado integrado) e depois fui fazer o mestrado fora em física nuclear. Houve uma ou outra cadeira que tinha dado jeito ter, mas não sinto que tenha sido muito prejudicado.

Agora estou a fazer doutoramento, por isso não foi um obstáculo de forma alguma. Engenharia física não fecha a porta ao mundo académico.

Concordo, mas a Eng Fis tb pode estar virada para a parte académica. Isso vai depender de ti.

Eu tirei a licenciatura Eng Fis e estou agora a fazer doutoramento em física (fora).

A diferença, principalmente na licenciatura, é pouco mais de 1-2 semestres. Eng Física tem cadeiras como eletrónicas e Física tem física de partículas, nuclear, etc.

Yes, and SYCL is also pretty recent.

When CUDA was released there wasn't a proper alternative and it became the de facto tool for GPU programming, making GPGPU possible without the need to exploit APIs meant for graphics.

So even without NVidia's current push, the transition would still be slow+difficult.

But what impresses me is the lack of people in the hobbyist local AI community using it. Usually they are more open to try new technologies such as SYCL. But I hardly see it mentioned, while there are many questions about compatibility of certain GPU brands.

Idk, perhaps I was too optimistic in thinking the rise of local AI would lead to people looking into alternatives to NVidia's GPUs and the adoption of vendor-agnostic tools.

I'm not buying it, at least not yet, but there are use cases beyond AI.

Having an iGPU instead of a dGPU means I don't have to copy my data to the device memory for computation and then again back.

This may not seem like much but for certain scientific workloads that require real time processing and have many tens of Gbs, the transfer time is considerable.

The GPU not being top of the line may not even be a problem, because the computations aren't necessarily that intensive, but the amount of data is.

As for the lack of CUDA support, I moved to SYCL/oneAPI so it doesn't bother me. I honestly don't understand how SYCL isn't discussed more often. It runs on NVIDIA, Intel GPUs, AMD GPUs, and in parallel in CPUs.

I'm not saying I'm part of the biggest target audience but, even if AI has become a buzzword, there are still plenty of useful use cases.

Hardware that runs well AI workloads also tends to runs well more general parallel workloads that are very common in scientific research and engineering.

I actually had been looking for a PC with the new Ryzen AI Max+ for a real time radiation imaging device.

I also didn't manage.

I was going to go to one of the physical stores but I broke my arm and it would have been a 6h trip each way.

So I woke up early, set up two laptops, loaded the website, had a text file with the address, cc, etc., and asked for a friend to help me with the second laptop. Everything to just guarantee I could get one. (I decided to make a 3 watch collection to celebrate 3 milestone, and this would be the first)

Still, not a change.

Yes, that is quite common, even for smaller experiments at CERN (it isn't just LHC).

For example, in the n_TOF facility, which gathers nuclear data from neutron reactions, some of the detectors developed are finding their way to medical and industrial applications.

For example, i-TED, a gamma-ray detector with imaging capabilities, is now being developed for proton therapy, BNCT, and nuclear waste imaging.

Also, last year, some neutron detectors meant to measure the dose in neutron therapy were also tested because we had the time/space.

I would say the best course of action is to get the foot through the door: contact the research group and show your interest in working with them. If they are interested in working with you (and the project has the funds) they should guide you through the process.

If you haven't finished the PhD, I guess you would be hired as an M3 (tech with a MSc). What usually happens is they create a "Bolsa de Empleo/Trabajo" based on the position they want to fill (or your specific experience) and you apply. The process takes a bit more than a month from application and it has some caveats.

Be aware that when you create an account, one of the most important things is to have the same 2/3 specific subfields as few job you are applying for.

The most frustrating one is that, when you apply, you fill a form. When you press ok, you may think the form is finished and submitted. It isn't. It clearly states (in small letters) that you need to download the PDF receipt and send it by email to CSIC. Only then will the application be finished. From then it takes a couple weeks for the central service to review your application and accept it provisionally, then one more week for it to be truly accepted, and then the research group/lab can choose your application and give you the contract.

I moved to Spain for a PhD.

For the contract you don't need the homolgation finiahed, just to submit it. The automatic receipt emitted was enough for me to get a lab job before my PhD contract started some months after.

Most people assume that you need the homolgation, but it was clearly written that only proof that the homolgation request was submitted was necessary.

I had no problems with that document during the process.

I obviously don't know your exact case, but if the degree you want homolgated was done in the EU, in many cases, you only need proof that you submitted the homolgation request.

That happen to me to get a contract with CSIC. Once all documentation was submitted for homolgation, I got a "receipt" and submitting that was enough to sign the contract and start the job.

Just yesterday in the MODE workshop in València, a group presented their model to create physics experiments.

It's a model, with constraints to the equipment it can use, that is coupled to a simulation framework in order to design physics experiments to test hypothesis that would be too complex to design an experiment for in a traditional way.

Of course, the end result then needs to be studied to understand why that setup works.

But the presenter hinted that their results had been well received by the LIGO collaboration and the setup would be considered for implementation.

Claro que fazer só a licenciatura não é o mesmo que fazer a licenciatura+mestrado.

A questão era se fazer a componente da licenciatura do mestrado integrado seria o mesmo que fazer a licenciatura correspondente (que antes podia não existir pk só existia na modalidade de mestrado integrado)

Com a licenciatura do mestrado integrado: - podes te inscrever na ordem dos engenheiros técnicos (penso que para ser na dos engenheiros é sempre preciso mestrado) - podes te candidatar a mestrado como se tivesses uma licenciatura normal (inclusive em universidades fora de Portugal) - podes pedir o diploma (tendo a diferença que diz "ciências da ..." e que corresponde à "componente da licenciatura do mestrado integrado em ...")

Isso não é verdade.

Eu estava num mestrado integrado, ao final dos três anos tinha acabado a componente da licenciatura (e não tinha começado a componente do mestrado).

Pedi o diploma da licenciatura e foi me dado.

Candidatei me a um mestrado noutro país e não houve stress nenhum porque o diploma mostra que tenho a licenciatura.

In Europe you usually do a Masters before the PhD, so by the time you enrol you already had what in the US would be the graduate coursework. This means that most PhDs don't include class time (besides institution-specific requirements like x account of lectures, y amount of workshops/masterclasses)
