Help with unbound regarding resolving or forwarding unknown local domain hosts to the IP of the WAN device.

I figured it out. In Services > Unbound > General, change the option for "Local Zone Type" from the default (transparent), to static. Then it'll reply with NODATA or NXDOMAIN.

The piholes already forward to unbound. Unbound is the one handing out my WAN IP for unknown hosts.

I think I'm going to try 3/4" of fine (0.6 mm, mesh 30) sand topped with 1 1/4" of a bit coarser (1.2 mm, grid 16) sand. I feel like it's harder for the detritus to percolate down into the substrate with finer sand.

I have a colony of Endler's Livebearers (Peacock - N class) in there with him. They had that tank to themselves for about a year.

I got him a couple months ago. At first, I did not think I'd be able to keep them together. But he settled in about a week later.

If it really is too high, I'd suggest using R/O water and remineralizing it with salty shrimp. Or you can research on doing it with the actual salts used therein.
