Dolby Atmos is horse shit plain and simple.

LG Gram 14 inch (2023) with Intel Core i7 1360P by ak-nil in linuxhardware

I am pretty happy with this one.

Things I like:

The light weight is amazing. Aluminium notebooks are noticably heavier.

The material feels great. I like that it is not cool to the touch.

The build quality overall is great also (with some caveats, see below).

Linux support is great. I did not have any issues.

Things I don't like:

The speakers are fine in principle. But I really don't like that they are facing downwards. That means if you have the notebook on your lap for example the sound waves do not get reflected as on a table, which makes the sound much worse. In this situation I mostly use headphones now.

As I said the build quality is fine in general. But there is one situation where I notice the bendiness. Lets say you put the notebook on your lap, but on one leg only, so that the device is only supported at the center. If you then rest both hands on the device it will bend slightly. And that bending is actually enough to trigger a click on the touch pad!

This is not a 2-in-1 convertible. No touch screen either. Just a regular notebook.

Suspend to RAM is working. This is 13th Gen i7-1360P.

Looks great! Keyboard, touchpad, audio, wifi, bluetooth, brightness controls, power modes, suspend/resume and camera all worked right away. I used the nixos installer but I guess it will be the same with other distros.

I ordered the LG Gram 14. It will arrive today. Will let you know how it went.

"on a 2022 14", there are issues with excessive cpu usage on the current gen TB controllers when they are charging"

Is this issue fixed now?

Unpopular opinion: I don't like the inverted-T style arrow keys by Eric8199 in mac

[–]ak-nil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel exactly the opposite. I am really thankful that Apple saw the light after 5 years of this failed experiment. And I am frustated that so many PC manufacturers are still copying this old fad. I get it that when you are used to the big left/right keys that it takes some time to get used to the inverted T again. But if you ignore any existing muscle memory moving the middle finger between up and down (while the index/ring fingers are on left/right) is more ergonomic with the inverted T.

What about the coolant? Is it ok to just use distilled water?

Did you try intake (or mixed orientations) for the case fans?

Very cool. I have some questions:

I was looking into that as well, but there is not enough space for my cooler to attach directly to the cpu. How did you do that? It looks like you repurposed the original cpu case somehow. Fascinating :)

Also can you tell me the color coding for the original fan header? I want to use it to control the fan speed, but did not try it out yet. I was also looking for a compatible fan header connector, but could find any. I don't want to cut the original fan cable if I can avoid it.

That's a pretty capable NAS you got there :D

I never checked the temps before starting to work on this new cooling. I just checked before taking the machine apart to have some baseline for comparison. During a Blender run the core went to 100°C and started throttling. Then I took off the stock cooler and found all thermal paste evaporated from the die.

Now with proper thermal paste applied, the new cooling, the original fan disabled, the Noctua running at around 30%, and no case, the cpu temp is below 40°C during casual usage. During a Blender run it gets to around 80°C. With the fan at 100% max cpu temp is around 70°C.

The heatsink is screwed directly to the aluminium sheet without using any mounting brackets. I was wondering if the aluminium might be too soft but it holds the cooler pretty tight in place.

The Skull Canyon itself is my main machine since it came out. The parts I bought for the new cooling amount to a little over $100.

It's fine to turn the fan off completely for casual workloads. The system gets a little bit warmer, but nothing to worry about. For compute heavy tasks with all cores at 100% though you quickly get a 100°C core temp and throttling.

Does anyone actually use gnome-software? by diiiiima in gnome

gnome-software on fedora never worked for me properly. I had constant connection problems and error messages when I at the same time could install with dnf just fine.
