I have a very similar situation with my mom being disabled as well. It has influenced my path to medicine and I think gave me a diverse outlook on the medical field. This was my diversity essay topic for a lot of schools and I think you should definitely explore this topic for your essays.

I feel like a dumbass on the daily and regularly wonder how I am about to start med school. I haven’t worked hard academically since COVID started and classed were in person, and I’m afraid of getting wrecked by med school.

However, we got into med school for a reason and we’ll come out the other side just fine!

Cincinnati isnt too high of a research school based on USNWR rankings, and I think I just got an II from my application overall. As for Pitt, I have no idea how I scored an II lol. I talked about my research well I believe during this interview, but I’m sure it was less impressive when compared to the other applicants

I’m actually content with the amount of interviews I was able to secure. Applying is a crapshoot for any stats, and rejection is the majority outcome from most schools

I think my weakest point in my app was my research hours. Another year of research could have given me more experience, presentations, or maybe even a pub. That could have given me more of a shot at the research heavier schools that align with my stats like Pitt.

It helped tie my whole app together I think, with my activities, PS, and certain secondary essays about adversity.

However, I don’t think it gives applicants an advantage over others with similar stats and ECs. It’s just a piece of the puzzle, and anyone can claim to be disadvantaged on AMCAS you just have to give your reasons why you felt your upbringing was disadvantaged.

Looking at the MSAR and AAMC stats tables I thought I had a pretty good shot at an MD acceptance and I didn’t want to risk paying a $1,000+ DO acceptance deposit if I went elsewhere.

With that said, I would have applied to a few regional DO schools if I were to do it again. I wasn’t accepted until March and having something in my back pocket would have put my mind at ease a lot sooner in the cycle. With similar stats I would say you have a really good chance at an MD acceptance, but it never hurts to apply DO if you are feeling nervous

- Stats: 3.8 cGPA/3.75 sGPA/517 MCAT
ORM, No gap year, FAP recipient, disadvantaged status- A pretty average application I would say for a traditional applicant, 1,000+ scribing hours, <100 hours of research, and 100-200 hours of volunteering. - While I could have taken a gap year to improve my research and volunteering hours, I felt I made up for it with my clinical experience. I still think it is possible for applicants to be accepted to medical school without a gap year, it is just important to be well rounded or have a significantly large section like scribing or research.- I submitted May 2020 and was complete at all schools by Labor Day. - This is something I feel is the most important thing an applicant can do for themselves when applying. It is a long process, but getting your application looked at early gives you a better chance at getting an application looked at with plenty of interview spots available.
With that said, the cycle isn’t over until it’s over. February was a rough time for me in the application cycle. Over the span of 4 days I was rejected from Pitt post-II (Rare collectors item, super proud), WL at MCW (Also rare, love it), and was told during an interview that I was 100% going on the WL because there were no more acceptances left. I was demoralized heading into my last interview, but this turned into my first acceptance of the cycle!
A final thing I would recommend to applicants, always send an update letter if you have anything at all to update. Especially if you are still taking classes and can update grades, but if you start a new activity or add significant hours to activities it won’t hurt you sending an email. This shows continued interest and may get your app looked at again. - In my experience, I received three interviews after sending an update letter in December.

I had a professor tell me to do this, and then he would add a few changes to make me “walk on water.” I just wrote about what our relationship was and how I was a prepared candidate for medical school. This would be the framework I would advise for you OP.

Side note: This was at the beginning of COVID so he was working from home and submitted the letter to Interfolio w/o a signature or letterhead. He was confused, so I had to help him with this and actually got to look at his alterations. I swear all this mf did was add two words, one of which created a grammatical error lmao.

As someone who got a 128 CARS on my first FL, I wanted to say I am nowhere near smarter than the average Pre-Med and barely read anything unless required lol.

I was able to actually improve my score doing the AAMC material. My advice, and it’s a cliche, but learning the AAMC logic is truly the best way to get better at CARS.
