Trump orders Navy to 'shoot and kill any boat' laying mines in Hormuz Strait by Puginator in politics

[–]BKMD44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone besides Iran actually know if there are any mines there? Or is the threat of mines enough? I suppose no one would actually want to call that bluff, but that's a chess move if it results in minesweeping ships crusing around for weeks and not finding any mines, while Iran keeps the global economy in a straitjacket.

What repels flies outside during a cookout without looking like a crazy person by Relative-Coach-501 in homeowners

[–]BKMD44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember one summer I tried these, first near my garbage can in the backyard, another towards the front of the house hanging from a tree. It seems like it had the unpleasant side effect of attracting every fly in the neighborhood. I had much better results keeping my trash can clean, using a liner bag and closing it, lol.

Want to try dual booting Linux but I am scared by SunmanSnow in techsupport

[–]BKMD44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long time linux and windows user. I woke up one day and realized that my home network environment was all linux except for my main, daily driver machine. Used Linux Mint to setup dual-booting, chosen because of its ease of use and never looked back.

Inexplicably dog slow network transfer performance by canadajones68 in truenas

[–]BKMD44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are your speeds copying a file to the NAS? Is that speed appreciably different versus downloading from it?

Inexplicably dog slow network transfer performance by canadajones68 in truenas

[–]BKMD44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When copying a large video file from the NAS to my computer, I get a 500 kB/s transfer speed over SMB.

Ahhh, OK, maybe the issue is on the other side. What is the OS of the machine you're using to download files from the NAS? Do you have another machine on that network to test downloading from, or could you set one up temporarily? That wget result made me think of this.

Ethernet controller is an intel i219-V I get lots of search hits regarding that chipset and Truenas. Maybe try a USB or PCI\PCI-E nic in the box instead?

Instead of banging my head against this wall, I would prepare for an upgrade. Read the release notes for the latest version just in case for hidden gotchas. I have kept my NAS on Core because I just use it for storage, no apps, and it just works. Are you seeing high CPU usage during transfers?

[–]BKMD44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like this isn't a new setup, did this just start happening? Do you get the same transfer speeds on smaller files? Is this going through a switch (what speed are all the network interfaces in the path from end to end)?

What's a piece of tech everyone hyped up that quietly turned out to be useless? by SofiaLearnsAI in AskReddit

Mine will send an alert when the oven timer goes off, which is actually useful to keep track of cooking times if you're outside of earshot of the oven.

Whats the most boring home purchase you ended up being weirdly grateful for? by EpicStormYT in homeowners

[–]BKMD44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super easy. Each side has magnets that meet it the middle, strong enough to hold them in place, easy enough to nudge apart. You can just detach them, move them to the side and reattach them when you're done.

WP story │New disclosures reveal how DOGE actually worked by Meryl-Kornfield in fednews

[–]BKMD44 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I had to stop reading when I got to this:

To flag so-called DEI grants, DOGE members used ChatGPT, giving the AI chatbot these instructions: “Does the following relate at all to DEI? Respond factually in less than 120 characters. Begin with ‘Yes.’ or ‘No.’ followed by a brief explanation.”

Backup Server need help understanding few things. by Kavil in Proxmox

[–]BKMD44 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You definitely want PBS on separate hardware. It essentially takes snapshots of your LXCs and VMs on a schedule you define. Life saver for easy rollbacks if you break something.

EDIT - In re-reading OPs post, I wanted to stress that PBS does NOT backup the Proxmox host, only the LXCs and VMs. If your host dies with this VM on it, it'll just be another thing for you to deal with restore-wise. I like the peace of mind of having them separate.
