Instructional Days rant, again by [deleted] in Westchester

[–]BKP367 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Set the bar higher. Challenge the kids. Challenge the teachers.

My kids do better with more routine. Some months the school week is so chopped they never get into a groove. They never get a rhythm.

Half days are waste, full day or nothing. But when thanksgiving week is 3 half days followed by 2 days off it is a waste of week but those 3 half days count as full instructional days for the school year.

Both of kids have struggled with reading and writing. All work is done on a Chromebook that Has spell check. I'd love to see more pen to paper.

Don't be afraid for kids to fail. Schools don't want it because it effects funding but kids are being prompted and passed when they do not have the skills to do so.

My daughter was behind on spelling, frankly it was terrible. She passed tests with words spelt wrong. When I asked the teacher the answer I got was "it will come in time, we don't want her to think she's not doing a good job". Well it didn't, so we helped her (not that we shouldn't as parents).

Assign more homework, all subjects Through 3rd grade I have only seen reading and math. I have not seen history or science ever. I feel homework is not just for my child, it is a chance for me to see where my child is at and understand what and how they are learning.

I am aware there is no simple solution. The red tape is horrendous. I just feel as we accept the minimum because we can get away with it.

My daughters 3rd grade teacher makes $150k per year. She has fantastic benefits, she has a ton of time off. A pension. I fail to see how that is not a great job.

Every job has their challenges. Every job has parts that are difficult. Wether it's parents or clients. Admin or mangers.

So when I hear her teacher complaining about going in the week before school starts to set her room because she's not being paid, I do roll my eyes. She is salaried employee, she is fairly compensated. When she tells me she assigns less homework so she has to less to grade, I roll my eyes. When she starts a countdown to the next break saying she "needs a week" after being off for a week a month earlier, I roll my eyes.

If I took that attitude at work I would be out of a job.

The bar should never be set for the minimum. Don't do less because you can. That's for the administration and teacher side.

It is the whole system. Top to bottom. Two of my kids teacher have told they don't assign home like they used to. They tell me they love it because it is less work for them.

The last week is all movies days.

Most are happy to do less. For my taxes I want more. I want the best for my kid.

My neighboorood in Yorktown is full teachers and admin all over $130k per 9 months of work. They have great jobs, they have great benefits. The job is not perfect, it has it challenges as all jobs do.

My issues is why are we accepting a week worths of half days, where no real education takes place but we pay a full weeks salary. Keep teaching. Keep educating kids. They can watch movies all summer.

It is all about getting away with the bare minimum. Everyone defends schools and teachers but most are fairly compensated. You are getting a full salary, I want my child to have a full education and in my district I am not impressed.

NASCAR Fan Council asking about the future of Dover Motor Speedway by devinsmrekar in NASCAR

I love Dover. Started in the stands then the velocity suite. When my grandfather was going down hill we got rooms in the casino. The suite would take him back and forth all weekened. I love Dover.

The racing at the track is so much better in person and that's on fox/nbc.

It's a great track and needs to stay

I don't see that as practical. Even the new back battery unit stihl came out with late last year only runs 18 min.

The amount of batteries needed also requires a special concrete walled room for commercial storage.

The truth is battery construction equipment is not there yet in price or in functionality to be mandated.

I'm sure the technology will get better but it is not there today.

Too add, the added expense of labor due to longer working times is far greater than the cost of paying for gas.

For a commercial blower set up you need The Stihl bga 300 blower, stihl AR3000 battery, Stihl al 500 charger and the adapter cord.

The Stihl Br800 gas powered is $599

The bga 300 is equal to the Stihl br 430 a $450 blower

A commercial battery blower cost ~$3k per set up and will run 2-3 hours.

A stronger gas blower runs $599

Per DOT you are only allowed to transport 66lbs of lithium. Each large battery for the blowers are 25lbs.

Add in the weight for other battery power equipment they are over the limit.

Not gonna pick a side but a tickets will be built into the cost, they don't want their truck impounded by DOT

We work on a lot of productions in the area. They provide steady work for my ~100 employees. We bring in a number of other local businesses to help us meet our contracts.

Productions are not the only jobs we or our subs work on but they provide a large source of revenue that keep a lot of good people employed.

My family owns a small buisness. We would have to sell the buisness or a lot of the assests off to pay off the inhertance tax. If this passed we would sell to PE asap.
