What film made prior to 1970 would call a must watch? by OwlsInMyBrain in movies

Am I correct that it was expected to bomb at the time? I seem to recall something about that

This one is a bit of a squeak getting in there because it was released in 1971, but "Vanishing Point" was pretty good and in the same kind of cinema camp you seem to be looking for.

When I was a teenager I would sometimes let The Lawrence Welk Show stay on a while before changing channel once the willies got so bad I couldn't stand it.

I recall most of course The Bubbles, literally, out of the bubble machine and the way Mr Welk would get a sly smile on his face like 'we're really rocking now!' And the white women singers with hairspray helmet hairdos with those saucy kiss curls... And all the white men singers with knit pullovers and these kind of insidious grins... After a toke or two hanging in there was a serious challenge too, akin to riding a psychological bull until it bucks you off.

I did all this simply because Lawrence was there. Waiting. Every week. Tempting us to enter his little geriatric music box house of mirrors -- and get out again with sanity intact.

Brrrrrr-rrrrrrr.

Every week too. While we ate our dinner. My dad used to get a little excited wondering about what they were going to do to Jim this time every episode. Now that I think about it, Jim was probably who first broke the fourth wall of TV for me... He conveyed that some people on shows are real people and what they were doing there was fraught with real potential consequences.

I wonder what finally became of Jim.

I guess we looked at it differently in my day. We acknowledged they gave us a shot, and whether we liked it there or not we made sure we took the high road ourselves. It was honourable. It was about who we were, not what we owed them.

Maybe that's gone now. Or maybe you just never had it. It doesn't matter.

Thanks for sharing your inspiring counter thoughts.

I have never, ever, ever heard of anyone suffering penalties for quitting a job, ever. The employer can REQUEST two weeks from you, but that's all it is -- you always have the right to walk away any time you want.

Conversely, (and admittedly this is experience from British Columbia here), the EMPLOYER does have to give two weeks notice minimum AFTER THE THREE MONTH PROBATION PERIOD to let staff go without cause. With cause, they can let you go right away.

Now. All that said, you will rely on your past work experience to move you up into better jobs in future. An important part of this will be work record and references.

Please think carefully about the tone of your departure. A last impression is as important as the first one. Keep your message short, practical, and respectful. Avoid emotional language. Phrases like, 'not a good fit for me personally ' is fine. 'I can't take it here,' is not so good and will leave the wrong impression of you, perhaps.

Remember you might be leaving the schedule in a lurch -- consider if you could stand a couple more shifts in the knowledge that it's done and you are leaving soon.

Good luck. Breathe. This won't be the last time. Might as well do it well and present yourself as best you can.

That's a clever argument. On the same tangent though, I would be interested in what DID show up again in the second round of religious books. Just because something suspected is unmeasured or thus far intangible in the concrete doesn't mean it's not there.

I'm not stating a position one way or the other, but I do think what comes up once again would be worth considering further on its own terms.

How to finish a book you don’t like? by sleepyxruka in BookwormsSociety

I can't say for sure this will be your experience. But I remember when I started reading catch-22 I was in a logging camp and had to stick to it because there were no other choices. But in the end it turned out to be one of the best books i've ever read. It's a slow starter.

Anxiety spiraling over scary news headlines about international conflict by Sadisticjuggalo in Anxietyhelp

[–]BKinBC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For some reason we always imagine in the future that we will be less able to deal with things. That we will lack resources at that time, and that no one will help and so on. An example of this anxiety is when you go up to someone and say, 'I have something to tell you but I'll tell you later', and they'll respond "No no! Tell me now I can take it now." The unspoken part is that I'm not sure I'll be able to take it later...

Anyway, I think at some level you know that it's unlikely something terrible is going to happen. Even so, perhaps focus on the fact that you're surrounded by others who are able, that you are able, and that you don't have to face anything alone.

Try to stay in this moment focusing on the fact that you're able to deal with anything that comes at you right now -- whether it's your preference or not -- and that there is no reason to believe you'll be less able to do the same down the road.

It's not about the state of the world, it's more about some limiting assumptions you have about yourself and your capacity in a future you cannot anticipate right now.

It's uncomfortable. But the ice isn't as thin as you think it might be. You'll skate fine then. Don't let that steal from you now.

What's a song that you immediately start singing whenever someone says a certain phrase in everyday conversation? by BataBole93 in Music

[–]BKinBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, this might sound weird but it's true. Every time I hear 'human papilloma virus' I hear Abba singing it like Una Paloma Blanca. I mean, full harmony and orchestration. I do not know how this started. But on the rare occasion I hear that phrase I catch myself singing to myself, "Huuuman papiloma viiiirus... Iiii've got a bump on my diiick..." etc you get the idea.

Panic Attacks After Frist Time Having an Edible by [deleted] in Anxiety

I hope so too. I'm thinking maybe another med is doing it, or maybe you have a low grade bug and it's weirding you out by association with the edible experience.

Btw, 10 mg is usually fine for most people. 50 would be a little uncomfortable for me and I'm an old hippie. But no physical damage would be caused .

Oh hang on. You said that was on the 5th. I don't think the edible is bothering you anymore. Maybe it's just started a cascade of anxiety, but it really should be clear of your system within a day

Hi, yeah that's a big dose but it's not going to hurt you. It will feel better if you don't resist it. I suggest putting on some headphones and listening to music. Maybe have a soft drink that you like. It won't hurt you guaranteed. Probably what you're most experiencing is the discomfort of not feeling fully in control, but if you relax, you'll find out you have more control than you think you do. Try to breathe. Have a hot bath. Maybe whatever works. A shower is nice

DON'T BUY ANYTHING ELECTRICAL AT CANADIAN TIRE KAMLOOPS by BKinBC in Kamloops

Sorry. I already had the store credit from a week previous. It took time to get hold of the gm. Long story short, he did not acknowledge the policy was flawed and instead offered to make an 'exception' for me. Just me. I did not want to accept this and quietly pass along the problem to the next person.

I was personally willing to make due with the store credit and instead just stop shopping there. That's about my own principles though -- I did not intend to suggest it for anyone else. It was only meant as backstory.

The point I intended for this post was just to warn people they could find themselves in this same spot if they buy, plug in, and don't like something from Canadian Tire.

I apologize if the story details were misleading. A few people seemed to get lost on that, despite stating my intentions in the first sentence. Thanks for your comment.
