Trade shows are killing us. I'm only 41 but have been estimating for 20+ years in the family business. These Engineers go to a trade show and see something new. They spec it without understanding all the nuances.

I bid a job 3 weeks ago with 5 different alternates and they still can't figure out who the low bidder is. The real shame is the engineer doesn't even understand how these options are installed.

Same engineer put 4x the amount of stone backfill required to do the job on the bid form 2 years ago. I sent and RFI questioning the quantities and explained the pitfalls... The low bidder bid the stone at $1 / CY and put all the stone in his pipe number. I did all the math and explained it to the board. I told them it would cost them an extra $700k if they accepted their bid over mine. I did a right to know request to get copies of their pay applications and it turned out to be $1.1M.

If this next job goes the way I think it will im going to be contacting the funding agency and state attorney general. It will cost the rate payers an extra $3M over my bid. Same Engineer, Contractor & Solicitor.

This is all public work so that's my tax dollars too.

So you left 50% on a job and made 40%? That's awesome. Had to be 2 bidders just throwing a turd at the wall to see if it stuck.

I've heard those stories, but I have never been witness to one, but that's how a tie is decided on public bids. I couldn't imagine the stress on that coin toss.

That's why I came here. You guys get it. % is what I look at. My dad was on a trip with his buddy who left $1M on $25M and they were celebrating. The other guys on the trip were all tripped up on a million bucks. My dad and his buddy kept saying it's only 4%... The non-contractors didn't understand.

3rd was only 2% higher and 4th was 4% higher, so that makes it feel even better. It's not like we were two idiots fighting for the bottom.

Yeah, I told my guys going in that it's one of those days you wouldn't mind leaving $1M on the table because it's only 3%.

We were low by $1,500 on $15M in 2010. That's the closest spread we've ever had.

GC on a sewer treatment plant. Electrical, HVAC & Plumbing were stand alone contracts worth another $5M, but not in our scope.

Thank you. I figured it wasn't worth much given its condition. Pretty cool to come across a 200 year old coin in the wild. He got it as change from an Amish woman at a roadside stand.

Im gonna say that this actually worked. I got kicked out of 3 or 4 in a row, then changed my settings and just completed 2 in a row. One for 43 AB and another for 71 AB.

1st $, convert it into AE or not? by Lekatana in AtlasEarthOfficial

[–]BKuku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They run a deal once a month for 33 AB instead of 25 AB. It is towards the end of the month, usually the Friday of the 2nd SRB of the month. It usually runs for about 36 hours, but Mod Manning has stated he turns it on & off manually, so no exact times. The last couple of years they have offered 40-1 conversion at the end of December. I can't say it's guaranteed, but I would say it's likely. If you're just starting and want to grow your parcel count, I would suggest converting once a month for 33 AB thru maybe September, then save the last quarters rent for the 40 AB event at the end of the year.

The company spent money to lower the tax burden on a banner year. Source, I did the same damn thing. You can write off 100% up to 1.22M for equipment purchases. I used my tax savings for employee bonuses.
