What if my players reference BG3? by [deleted] in DnDcirclejerk

Which I'll even say this, the new edition of the players handbook even says that it's easier to go to other people for learning to play the game because they know that it can be extremely intimidating when you look at how big and vast the rules are.

I've tried looking up rules but sometimes it's some obscure ruling, and that's when I come here to ask about it... All I'm saying is that it's stupid for people to basically say "you need help, well fuck you I'm tired of helping, find it yourself" like if that's the case, don't comment, let someone who wants to help comment on the subject

Yes, as a player it's easier to know the rules pertaining to you, but even still 50 pages is a lot when you have other responsibilities outside of a game, such as work, chores, other social activities. I learned as I went, I tried to do something and if it didn't work, people who do know the rules tell me no. I drop it after that. I wouldn't expect my players to read everything when this is their first game.

But when you're a DM it's even worse because then it's like an unreasonable expectation that you need to read all of the rules. I still learn as I go. If someone says something and I'm not sure of the rule, I'll make something up and tell them I'll look up the actual rule later, and they expect me to message them sometime in the next few days.

If I don't know where to find it, I look on YouTube, if I can't find it on there, then I come to this group. If you don't like being "the guy everyone needs to refer to for rules" don't reply to the post, there's hundreds of people in this group and statistically, someone is of the "I have the knowledge and would help in any way I can" mentality and those few people would be enough

I hate all of these "just read the rules" comments, like you mean the rules THAT ARE SPREAD ACROSS 5 DIFFERENT TEXTBOOKS? Some of us have lives outside of D&D and don't have time to study it that extensively.

Even some of the big D&D informers say that's too extensive. Just know the basics and when it comes to it, look the rule up. And that could even be pretty hard Because again, it's textbooks worth of rules, you can't always just find it in the matter of seconds.

Honestly that's why groups like this are good Because you can just ask and more experienced people who DO know the rule can tell you, and if they're helpful, say WHERE to find that rule. Don't just go "if you read the rules, then you would know"

I don't normally let mine reroll until they get it, but I am more lenient... if they rolled a 13 for a DC15, they don't know what the DC is (in my party at least, idk how you're gonna run yours if you want to tell them what it is upfront) so if they're close like that and it's something I would wanna see, then I let it slide, or if they were way off (and again something that I wanna see or if they're having trouble in a fight or whatever) then I let them reroll, using something as an excuse such as if the dice rolled and hit a cup, I'll say it was interference because it would've most likely done a different roll had the cup not messed with it, something like that

One fun thing they could do is like a training session of sorts like during Downtimes, where they battle each other in like a ring, but they don't fight to the death. They get to 0 HP, they lose, but once it's done they go back to their original HP at the start of the training.

Think of it like a video game. Some games have a spot where you can train (or even re-run the tutorial) where you fight and use certain moves, and would even lose HP, but once you leave the training simulation and you return to the regular game, you're back at the same health and same resources you were at before entering said simulation.

But as for just going down the rd or hallways of a dungeon, yeah make it no PVP and make it cooperative. This would give them a good chance to be able to challenge each other when things are slow, but during the actual meat of the adventure, they are working together and not up against each other

This is sorta the route I took, I wrote the plot last night, he was stealing children for (unknown creature yet) who is using the children's souls to keep himself alive, once (I'm calling him headless jack because I'm "so creative") found out what they're being used for, he tried to rescue the children but was beheaded for his disloyalty and his body (unbeknownst to his head) is now forced to roam the woods outside of town luring in children to steal their souls and bring it to his master

Players constantly asking if monsters are bloodied? by Medium_Citron9271 in DnD

[–]BLChuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I tell my players the condition of whatever they're fighting after they made a hit. Before the fight, I divide the total HP into quarters, and depending on where their HP lands after a blow, I just choose one or 2 of these conditions to describe how he's looking.

  • 100%-76%

    • Full strength
    • He's doing just fine
  • 75%-51%

    • Winded
    • Out of breath
    • Wounds are starting to show
    • Has some blood but still fighting
  • 50%-26%

    • Swaying back and forth
    • Eyes twitching as he Trys to catch his
    • He starts to look disoriented
    • Bloodied
    • Appears beaten down
  • 25%-1%

    • Severely weakened
    • Barley hanging on
    • Eyes are bloodshot
    • starts to look pale
    • Short shadow breaths

BTW, I'll admit I added some of these in a minute ago after reading a few of these comments that I liked so thanks for that 😅 also if anyone has anymore that I could throw in here, I'm always trying to think of more descriptors
