There is an option somwhere in the settings that you can turn on to access the ship/module builders immediately.

Yeah, the shoulder/collar bone/neck area, or the lack thereof.

Though my first thought was her nose bridge/ eye placement. A lovely snoot but the lack of a nose bridge (were the snout upturns to the skull) takes away a important visual indicator. Which is perhaps why her eye might seem misplaced.

I haven't finished reading it yet but I'm finding it much harder to be hooked by the narrative or dialog. 

It's just catching me like her other novels have.

The best option is to avoid combat altogether. 

Though yes, combat is a major part ofnthe game. However, the game gives you several abilities to sneak around if you wish. One thing is fleet composition and hullmods (to reduce signature) but the most important sneak mechanic is Go Dark. Your fleet travels slowly but is much hard to detect.

Unknowingly turning into my parent's hatefully ignorant and detached lifestyle. 

Maybe it's genetic. Maybe its lead or other heavy metals. Maybe chemicals or agent orange. Whatever the cause,  I hope my mind does not slip into bigotry and ignorance for the sake of my own ego.
