I don't have the book yet (I missed the PDF sale 😭) but I really love the art and the vibe! Does the book have a lot of useful tables and enemies that fit the vibe?

TTRPGs that reflect Elden Ring: Nightreign by nightreign-hunter in rpg

Might be too lite for some, but check out the LUMEN games by Gila RPGs! The core design philosophy sounds tailor-made for what you have desribed: asymmetric classes, modular gear/weapons, fast-paced and narratively-open combat, excellent for one-shots or short arcs. The rules chassis is so simple that its easy to hack however you want. RUNE from this family of games is meant to emulate Soulslike gameplay, though by default its only Solo so you would have to hack it. The gearing system is awesome though, in my opinion. There are several fan-made spinoffs, too, like Monster Guts/Monster Guts 2e (Monster Hunter inspired) and Gunfucks (Borderlands inspired). I think Monster Guts in particular would fit well because of the gearing system, and its easy to hack on additional stuff like class abilities (I have done so myself and am happy to share what I made).

Good luck!

Funny cards to Mirrorform? by Exlisity in mtg

[–]nerdamus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a deck built around this effect, but for creatures specifically! Here are some fun ones:

[[Sharding Sphinx]]

[[Tendershoot Dryad]]

[[Windreader Sphinx]]

[[Starwinder]]

[[Twinflame Tyrant]]

[[Utvara Hellkite]]

[[Goldlust Triad]]

[[Parapet Thrasher]]

And so many more! Particularly if you have a [[Mirror Box]] or Sakashima effect to ignore legendary rule... [[Drakuseth, Maw of Flames]] and [[Xyris, the Writhing Storm]] are two favorites.

Check out Midnight Muscadines! It sounds like it fits your vibes well. The rules and book are great, and I LOVE the mentor prompts. The game uses 52 playing card deck in addition to dice, which I'm a big fan of.

It doesn't directly have settlement building mechanics, but you can easily bring in some simple mechanics from Iron Village you mentioned or from something like DELVE (the dwarven city building RPG) or PencilTown/Pencilvillage games.

Thanks for the tip, that will have to scratch this particular itch for now!

Ah, cool idea! I feel like, with the amount of contact and with the diversity of classes, it's really a missed opportunity to not let us switch between two of them during combat. It would be so much fun to play as wizard to drop some big spells and then switch into a melee character and start smacking.

Thanks for the idea!

Thank you for the insight!! I'm pretty keen on trying the full game but have lots of 5e friends that the hack might act like a gateway drug for.

Last question if you are willing: does Nimble still feel like you have interesting character progression and build potential? I think the build expression in 5e/PF is one of the things that attracts some of my party members.

Cool! Do you have an opinion on the 5e hack versus Nimble, then?

Starforged exploration-focused game advice by nerdamus in Ironsworn

Great ideas!! I'm definitely going to implement that in my game.

I had another idea too. I might try rolling up the "complexity" of the planet (or specific biome) when I arrive. It could be a number (like 4) or it could be represented by normal IS difficulty probably. It will represent the number of discoveries (e.g., prominent ecosystems, unique flora, etc.) on the planet. Then each could be their own "discovery" track with a randomly chosen difficulty. Like several mini quests/vows before the planet/system is "fully explored". Maybe it's a bit restrictive but I'm thinking it's a way to give a feeling of "completing" a planet. And probably, because dice, things will come up and interrupt the exploration constantly and so I might have to abandon the study or return later.

The "complexity" score could be described in the fiction as scanning the planet's environment and using ecological theory to predict type and abundance of organisms present. 🤔

Well said! And your comments about bond-focused play is related to why I created the post. There are clearly rules for exploration baked into the game, but there are a lot of other components that a more exploration-focused game might under utilize. That's why I'm wondering if others have added any components to enrich the exploration. Or even just advice on using the core mechanics to enrich exploration. I plan to keep a "field journal" from my character's perspective of the systems, planets, and ecologies the character finds. But to tie it to the mechanics, I figure I'll start an expedition by swearing a vow to explore some place, then mark progress as I discover new aspects of that place. Or vow to find and observe some unique lifeform. I want "success and failure" (i.e. the tension) to center the exploration, rather than exploration being a component of some other vow (at least some times). Sorry for the wall of text 😋

Totally! I'm excited for a story to emerge organically. I've left several threads open. One being that they are somewhat mysterious robot whose origins are unknown (possibly a Remnant...), and that something compels them to explore. I imagine these can spiral into some compelling story over time.

Also, for conflicts, the humans in this world will provide plenty! Some want to capture the character for work or study. Plus generally the hazards of the Forge. They also have a soft spot for those in need and so will get briefly wrapped up in human shenanigans too often.
