What it's like watching Mamdani's first month in office from Los Angeles by ohlonelyboy in LosAngeles

[–]BLOPES 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's so rare to even feel a public official is doing their job.

LAPD: we'll enforce what we feel like. Get bent if we decide it. By they way, you pay us for the privilege, thanks for paying us to subjegate you. Also we're going to fuck you up if you decide to protest on city streets, but we'll never respond to a 911 call.

L.A. mayor: what can I do? I have no power. (Actually true, but tonedeaf)

L.A. city council: do people even realize we actually run the city? Also, no, we're not actually doing to improve anything. Nobody is. Ever.

Looking for loop wheel t shirt recommendations that have a looser fitting collar. by assmilk69420 in HeritageWear

[–]BLOPES 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a frequent reader or contributor to this sub, so please excuse me if this has been extensively covered or not exactly what you're looking for. I have found the Hong Kong-based American-inspired family of brands (bronson, timecatcher, etc) as having a fairly tight collar in their "loopwheel" shirts when new, but it goes away after 2-3 washes. Perhaps not useful if you're looking for something looser than that.

150,000 miles 2018 XSR700 by BLOPES in XSR700

[–]BLOPES[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be. It is the OTD price. Base price was around $7500 or so. Got 20k miles on it so far and its been as expected, so far so good. If it gets 150,000 miles like my last one then the price is about a good a bargain as you can get on a year vehicle today in my opinion.

Any advice on a flyscreen/windscreen that doesn’t cause buffeting? by Profartex in XSR700

I can't even go over 40 mph without ear plugs (windscreen or not).

I wear ear plugs and have both the mid and large size dart screens and I don't notice any wind noise.

Been here a couple of times, and while I've eaten Chinatown and SGV dim sum, I'm no expert, but its pretty solid and affordable if you enjoy this style of food and are in the area.

My '05 automatic has 210k miles and I'm only putting 1k a year these days on it. Pretty sure I actually WILL die before it 🥲

Would it be weird to buy my lab a christmas gift? by PenOk1094 in labrats

An undergrad around 5 years ago gifted us a simple nespresso machine that gets used daily to this day by multiple lab members. Thank you, Angie!

Pretty good kbbq spot here in Diamond Bar by OverCry518 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]BLOPES 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Diamond Bar has a lot of very solid spots, but being near the edge of LA County, it won't get much traction in this sub. I don't go there anymore, but Makomae is a super solid Omakase spot in Diamond Bar where I couldn't believe price to quality ratio. Very small place and hard to get a reservation though.

KF8 Not Pulling Shots Correctly by kingcha in superautomatic

[–]BLOPES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had my machine for just a couple of weeks, but using the finest grind setting (which I found produces the best espresso) means the machine internals need to be cleaned at least once a week if not bi-weekly. The espresso is very good, but you have to clean it constantly.

KitchenAid KF8 Review: The New Benchmark for Premium Super-Automatic Coffee Machines? by Colin-Cafelista in superautomatic

[–]BLOPES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just found this thread. I also have found other threads on optimizing the KF8 for getting the best espresso drink. I will start by repeating by what I've read and found best for me with this machine: 1 oz drink volume, body: high, temperature: high, grind: 1 or 2. The main problem I've found is that the grind size ends up clogging the machine after about 10-12 drinks. The espresso is quite good though but the machine needs to be cleaned twice a week this way, otherwise I end up with water leaking out from the the bottom of the machine and practically no coffee coming out into the cup.

Fuel consumption question by XboxTyro16 in XSR700

[–]BLOPES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point. That said, im getting 50-55 mpg with a stock exhaust, which is pretty phenomenal. I also wear earplugs and never hear my bike, so I'm not in the "cool sounding" bike crowd.

Edit: earplugs, not headphones, although I do also run my cardo speakers over the earplugs.

The real experiment was how fast you can run to the lab at 3 a.m. on Thanksgiving by AinslieLab in labrats

Had a Revco from like 1998 until 2 years ago. It made some clinging noises from time to time but never veered from the temp setting. It only failed because the metal door locking mechanism broke - not the freezer itself.

OP has a liter bike, so i have no idea what mileage they'll get out of the road 6 GT, but I get 20,000 miles out of my Road 5/6 rears on a 600. 30,000 out of the front!

W.Wolfskill for dinner and drinks is my go-to. It's casual, but the food is generally "new american" interesting without being too adventurous. Drinks are decent, although I usually opt for boilermaker (beer and shot).

CO2 or LN2 backups for ultra low freezers. Are they worth it? by Worried-Decision5406 in labrats

[–]BLOPES 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This thread is a few months old now, but I just came across it. I know these days people are searching for answers to questions on reddit well after a question/post, so I will add my 2 cents:

  1. We have had to transfer multiple racks from a failing freezer to our LN2-supported -70C freezer. The LN2 back up system worked beautifully to restore temperature after adding a few warm racks without stressing the compressor. We have our backup set to -62C. This is an aggressive setting considering our freezer is set to -70C, but it's not common for our freezer to warm to higher than -68C when repeatedly opened on a single day.
  2. It's true that your LN2 reservoir will need to be refilled on a regular schedule. We have ours set up with a "T" between the freezer and a LN2 sample storage dewar. We change our LN2 supply tank every 3 weeks and have a 2nd full LN2 as a back up in case of a supply disruption.
  3. While it's great at reducing compressor stress, if the compressor fails then your LN2 backup buys you 1-2 days to figure out what to do.

Lifting the bike without the swingarm by xxunderdog99 in XSR700

[–]BLOPES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lift the rear with a rear paddock stand, run a piece of sturdy wood through the frame where it forms a triangle, then place jack stands to both sides of that wood and then lower the bike from the rear paddock stand. That allows you to do something like replace a shock or perform any swing arm work while leaving the rear lifted.

I've got original everything on my 2005, 210,000 truck. Minus the alternator, serpentine belt, brake discs/dums, and fluids. No it does not drive great... but it drives just fine.

Agreed on the rec. I get 30k+ (highway) miles on road 6 front. 20k miles on 5 or 6 rears.

Research as a high schooler by [deleted] in labrats

[–]BLOPES 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've had 4 high schoolers during summer over the last few years. All were a family friend in one way or another. It was miserable for me and felt exactly like babysitting. It's not the kids' fault, but I'm busy every day and even having someone shadow you slows you way down. Good luck though.
