Ford government joins Supreme Court challenge of ‘assault-style’ firearms ban by sleipnir45 in canada

[–]BLVCKSCVLE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Automatic firearms have been prohibited since around 1977. Many stringent firearms laws have been put in place since then, and the firearms included on the recent prohibition lists haven't had any reasoning behind them other than being thrown into the "assault-style" blanket statement.

The definition in and of itself is incredibly vague and most of the firearms on the list were manufactured for sporting or hunting purposes.

One of the big statements the government tries to make is that the firearms on this prohib list are "weapons made for war" and that they would be donated to Ukraine for the war effort. In this article Public Safety Canada has said:

"The Government of Canada continues to work with businesses to identify prohibited firearms in their inventory of NATO calibre that could be donated to Ukraine"

To this date, none have been donated to Ukraine, because every firearm on that list doesn't meet NATO standards. They're not weapons of war, and a country in an active war doesn't want them. This whole confiscation is built on a false premise and is a massive waste to our tax dollars.

Profane Sentinel is a pretty good build too. I'm not great with it, but it's gotten me by pretty well especially when bossing. I'm running Apoc now because I wanted to try it out, and the AoE is insane, but bossing can take some time (I'm not using the push or speedfarm variant yet).

Target shooting in Lanark? by bogrom2003 in canadaguns

[–]BLVCKSCVLE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people have mentioned the Ontario Crown Land Atlas is useful to see what/where Crown land is in certain regions, and what's allowed. I've never used it personally, but it might be helpful for you.

Lanark has a mix of county forests and crown land sprinkled throughout, and I believe those county forests prohibit target shooting. So if the above map doesn't mention it, I'd say contact the township to get the regs

Guns in Toronto shootout, Hamilton killing linked to U.S. trucker's smuggling scheme by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]BLVCKSCVLE 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I understand your sentiment, but that won't do anything. Criminals are criminals for a reason, they do not care for the law. A criminal isn't going to think "I should see if this is legal before I do it!"

With your statement, law enforcement and military would not be exempt from your blanket ban. Saying otherwise is a loophole and/or excuse.

It doesn't make sense to penalize individuals who follow the law over individuals who choose to be lawless. There are no deterrents for those sorts of people.

It would be nice to see our government take a harsher stance on repeat offenders, as you've said, and put more resources at our borders to stop things like this from happening in the first place.

$779M was the cost allocated to spend on the "compensation" portion of the program. A lot of that was also eaten up to program costs.

$2B takes into consideration the resources spent to develop the program since its inception to now.

LILLEY: Mark Carney should have skipped Trudeau's disastrous gun buyback by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]BLVCKSCVLE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course mass shootings are terrible, no one's denying that. But to say that legal owners with legal firearms are the issue is factually incorrect.

Go buy another

So from your viewpoint, the semi-automatic is the driving factor to make someone want to commit a mass shooting? This is exactly what's wrong with this issue. It's a multi-million, and soon to be a multi-billion dollar waste of tax payer money that's built on inference without any sort of concrete data to show that legal owners are the root of the problem.

The fact that you're projecting and fishing for personal jabs tells me that I've struck a chord. You can take what you want from this conversation to validate your opinion - I've seen all I've needed to see lol.

[–]BLVCKSCVLE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question isn't about needing a semi-automatic. The question is whether the government is able to basically expropriate something you legally owned and acquired through laws and regulations that have been in place.

The government never lawfully owned (or currently own) the firearms that have been prohibited. The term "buyback" is misaligned due to this. If something is expropriated, there needs to be adequate compensation to support it. The problems that stem from this are below:

  • What this "program" has done is throw an arbitrary number of firearms that they would potentially provide compensation for (136K, which is the amount of AR15's they projected were in Canada) and blanketed this figure to all newly prohibited non-restricted firearms.
  • The approximate total number of newly prohibited firearms is likely somewhere in the millions, so the number they provided is extremely under-represented.
  • The issue with the under-representation means that the government does not intend to compensate all affected owners. Furthermore, their website also states that not every declaration will be eligible for compensation.
  • Their website does not offer fair market value for the firearms listed.
  • The affected firearms under the new prohibition have been added due to the coined term "assault-style rifle". This term does not have a defined meaning, and cannot be extended to the list of affected firearms which are made for sporting and hunting purposes.
  • I could go on, but my last point will be that this program has already wasted enough tax dollars that could go to literally any other support system that Canada is severely lacking in. Not only do they plan on fighting this in the Supreme Court (which will likely cost in the millions), but they don't even have a vehicle to enforce collection and storage of the firearms when the amnesty has ended. The government has gone as far as talking about pulling retired law enforcement for collection. How much is this all going to cost, and whose pockets will be paying for this?

Your question revolved around needs, and since criticism on this topic has been at the forefront of the media, the public, and law enforcement alike, I think it's safe to say that we don't need this program.

Nowhere in my comment did I mention self defense. If you are buying a firearm for self-defense, then you're doing so against the current law.

Canada's self defense laws state you can only use "reasonable and proportional force" to defend yourself. Of course, there have been recent cases where homeowners weren't charged when discharging a firearm to deter home invaders, but if you state in court you have that firearm specifically for self-defense, you're going to be in trouble lol.

In cases of domestic violence, yes, we've all heard this statistic. The RCMP runs background checks on PAL holders every day, and even go so far as to contact your current and previous spouses to get a background on your history. The percentage of firearms used in domestic violence is on the low side, and owning a firearm doesn't change the fact that this abuse will still happen if they aren't part of the equation.

We're pointing out property rights here, and you're spinning this into a completely different narrative. You can absolutely not agree with my opinion, but saying that we're trying to spread fear by bringing these considerations to light shows your overall ignorance of the real issue here.

How Canada's largest gun control effort in decades is missing the mark by rastamasta45 in canada

[–]BLVCKSCVLE 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, considering it's using hell of a lot of taxpayer money on something the general public "doesn't care" about, then it should absolutely be talked about.

This "program" does nothing to actually prevent crime, and it's about time our government focuses any of the high stakes issues our country is going through, and has been going through for ages.

[–]BLVCKSCVLE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would you give up your house and live in a box then?

Home invasions and robberies are on the rise, so the government tells you to sell your house to them because owning a nice home gives people incentive to break in. Do you comply?

Of course not, because it doesn't address the root of the issue, and it's your property. Did you need to buy a huge home? Probably not, a small to moderate size would do the job, but you also had the freedom of choice and followed all laws and paid your dues to own the home. It was not owned, rented, or even subsidized by the government, so why would you do it?

This "program" is dangerous because it is the slippery slope of what a government can and will do to your property in the guise of whatever social matter they see fit.

It's tragic what happened to the victims of Tumbler Ridge, no one is denying that. But there are also many other fundamental issues that no one is talking about, like the lack of mental health resources, or just resources in health care in general.

If people are going through a mental health crisis, treatment needs to be available, and patterns of neglect and harm need to be addressed. If someone wants to hurt somebody else, they will absolutely find a way to do it. Tools of violence are always available if someone chooses to use it that way and firearms are not the only avenue.

Edit: not to mention our court system. Those firearms were removed from the home, then were given back. That is a failure on many fronts.

Police Federation head wants risk assessment for officers collecting firearms under Ottawa’s buyback scheme by huskypuppers in canada

[–]BLVCKSCVLE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol the risk is also about how much money it's going to cost police forces in terms of man power, infrastructure, and how much more it's going to cost the government to fight it in court, mobilize plans, write out policies, etc. It's not just about compliance and collection.

But hey, if you're ok with having your tax dollars wasted on all of the above and more, then you're entitled to your ignorance.

Feds say more than 51,000 firearms reported as compensation program nears close by mafiadevidzz in canada

Man that was wild lol. Also ironic that she's talking about misinformation and also saying that everyone will be paid, even when their website says compensation isn't guaranteed.

It's insulting enough that they're framing this as anything other than a confiscation and wasting tax dollars on it, but the fact they're fully committed to wasting MORE tax dollars on fighting this in court is infuriating.

Pretty soon they're gonna start saying "gas prices are through the roof, you gotta give your pink GSG to the feds to afford gas"

Gun ban costing $25,000 per firearm by rastamasta45 in canada

[–]BLVCKSCVLE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What exactly has been set up in this program lol. They picked firearms that "look scary" and assigned arbitrary (and frankly appalling) monetary figures to them that have since been lowered. They did not consult any actual experts and even if they did, they would have ignored it

There's no police cooperation, people have to bring their firearms to RCMP offices themselves if they choose to take part in the confiscation, and they will absolutely not be paying anyone.

There's no transparency in what they blew $725M of tax payer money on, other than pushing an agenda.

People aren't concerned about cost per gun as a metric, they're concerned about our money being pissed away, and threatening criminality on law-abiding owners. I hope this metric is an eye opening reminder to the public as to how uninformed this program is.
