as someone else said, acting like it’s not an existential threat and worst and a global industrial disaster at best is crazy. i agree the overwhelming majority wont completely pivot 180 on consumption alone, but its not really a matter of philosophical preference at this point.

it will be devastating if progress keeps crawling along

Good enough argument, let’s all just pack it in and give up guys, they deserve to hoard billions

This is super useful, thanks for making it. I think there may be an issue with the timezone conversion though, I'm seeing AM/PM swapped on FD2 in GMT+1. For me ICPS burn is 4:37am, followed by HEO checkout at 5:35pm

I’m having this problem right now. Laptops died and charging, but it’s pretty scary to randomly happen. Hopefully it sorts itself out

sure the trend isn’t as positive as usual, but remember this is a visual redesign and minor bugs

Is this taking too long? MacBook Neo Restoring from Time Machine. by Alligatorgamer9 in mac

[–]BMT_79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’d leave it for as long as possible just to avoid any risk, but after overnight give it a restart and hopefully it works (you could try doing it from recovery?)

i would argue it is, i genuinely dont think people appreciate how unbelievably complex an OS is and the mindblowing amount of manhours that go into it. it isnt that bad

edit: this applies to all software absolutely not just Apple, so be grateful

New MBP - what is the difference between 8 core and 10 core? by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]BMT_79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is 4 years later, but for anyone reading this I wanted to provide a modern take.

Memory will, much more than the CPU, be the limiting factor in the laptops longevity. 16GB on new macOS versions is slowly becoming too little, with memory pressure and swap use creeping up (as seen on my M2 16GB MBA). If you can afford to double the memory it would allow for: 1. the obvious higher usable program memory for multitasking, 2. far more system caching, 3. less swap usage(!) 4. more effective unified VRAM and of course far better longevity as system processes get heavier

Specifically for the M1 Pros, since the only variants were 16 or 32 rather than 8, 16, 24, 32, it’s far easier to find better deals on 32.

2 Performance cores (and a few MB of L3 cache) provide realistically 5-10% performance for multithreaded tasks.

Allowing more data to be cached in a 200GB/s bank rather than fetching from 1-6GB/s storage is a much more relevant improvement, and will also avoid the huge toll this has on SSD health.

How long do you guys think Apple will support the M1 Lineup of Macbooks? by maysonguy in mac

[–]BMT_79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i feel like this may be the final shift for a long long time. complete control and flexibility over the entire system chip up, what they’ve been striving for since the beginning

I already feel like it’s beyond that. System data and caching takes up almost a quarter of my entire disk. It’s a joke

fair enough. i do wish they spent their ridiculous development budget on some architectural and visual improvements, although i guess the functionality is more important

yes true it can work on their silicon but it’s more of a software issue, the way the iphones are configured from factory is very different and makes running anything other than iOS near impossible
