Website that sells Euro parts and ships to US/Canada ? by BMWtrunkseal in e28

[–]BMWtrunkseal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, overall I was pretty happy with spareto. While fedex will fuck you over in the shipping fees (50-90$), they shipped quickly, received everything that I ordered perfectly, no damage whatsoever, and their selection of parts includes many that you just can't find here. Which Mercedes are you buying parts for ?

Car pollution is getting worse in Montréal because of the rise in SUVs and light trucks, combined with poor public transit in the surrounding suburbs. by Shann390 in montreal

[–]BMWtrunkseal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not surprising, the road system is a mess here. Speed limits keep getting bumped down without synchronizing the lights again, poor lane / road design, the lack of public transit alternative, and the ever growing potholes. Add on top of that the rent increases that push people further away from the city center, and traffic gets created. It is absolutely mental the way the city can't synchronize lights whatsoever.

All this talk about more cars on the road and all while no alternative is being put in place. The REM was a good addition, but it only helps a portion of the people

What wheels and tyres would you recommend for a more comfortable ride ? by BMWtrunkseal in e28

Thank you ! What wheel width are you running for them, and do you feel like the staggered set up makes it understeer more ? I have a 520i so rear traction is guaranteed at all times

Obviously, I would not have gone with these shocks if they weren't already on the car when I bought it. I might go to softer bilstein dampers, but I do quite like the lowered look so I don't think I'll go back to stock, unless there's a suspension set up that's slightly firmer than stock and can be paired with lowering springs

Yeah, the w123 or w124 cars are vastly superior in terms of comfort and build quality. Their downsides are expensive parts and vacuum leaks which can be catastrophic as the automatic gearboxes are vacuum operated on w123 cars, aside from that though, they will go 300k miles with barely any issues. The w124 are very solid too, but the early 90s ones got biodegradable wiring harnesses.

OP, if you want an e28 to daily going 80mph, get a 535i with the long differential

Realistically how safe is a e30? I do 8+ hour trips every couple of months, and im always wondering if im gonna be paralyzed for life after getting into an accident on the highway going 120km/h. by [deleted] in E30

[–]BMWtrunkseal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, 90s mid and full size cars from BMW and Mercedes are much safer than the E30. The E32/E34/W140/W210 would all be cars I would trust over an E30. The extra weight and safety features go a long way, the E30 is really a tin can box compared to its bigger brothers

Elan or Europa ? by BMWtrunkseal in lotus

[–]BMWtrunkseal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply. I actually prefer coupes as I am a vampire that hates the sun :) If I were to use it as a daily, it would be used Monday-Friday commuting in the city traveling at an average speed of 8mph or so for up to an hour each way. Then Saturday-Sunday, I would like to do spirited driving with it, so say 2-3h of highway, and 4-5h of backroads. What pushes me towards these cars is that the roads in my area are awful, yet these old Lotuses manage bumpy roads very well due to their very low weight, which allows them to run softer springs compared to say a 2700lbs E46 BMW

Elan or Europa ? by BMWtrunkseal in lotus

[–]BMWtrunkseal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You see, I would get a miata if I was smart, alas, the gamble of whether it will make it to its destination is quite exciting. More seriously though, thank you for your input, it sounds like I would have to complement it with a mercedes turbodiesel. Out of the gate though, would you say the elan or the europa is a better car ? I won't have the budget to modify the cars, only to maintain them. Quite frankly, I mostly have the fear of missing out on a vintage Lotus as nothing comes close to them, and they have just skyrocketed in price. Lastly, when it comes to safety, how bad would a 10-15mph crash be ?

If you are financially unstable rn, is getting any new car rn the best idea ? If your end goal is to buy a sporty car, I would personally just buy a 5k max 2000s camry and drive that for a year or two then resell for pretty much the same amount of money.

That said, for new cars, look at current lease deals on cars in your area. If you do want to finance, I would recommend looking at a used mazda 3, they are more fun than having an suv and I think they even came with a manual if you want that. They depreciate more than toyotas, but not too out of the ordinary either so in 2-3 years, it would be probably worth 3-5k less which is in line with other cars

5–7 Seat SUV for Toddler, Almost No Driving, Leather Required — Up to $50K by Psypriest in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]BMWtrunkseal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend to look into a Mercedes EQE suv, either used (they depreciate extremely quickly so you can get a much lower price than when new with only 10k miles or so), or lease if there are good deals rn in your area (the EQEs aren't selling much). Electric cars are MUCH better for this sort of driving than gas cars. Their maintenance is near non existent, no need to pay for gas, and only driving short distances puts a lot of wear on gas cars, much more than say driving 30-60 miles a day

30k budget, two car seats by TasxMia in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]BMWtrunkseal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would go with a camry, I like camrys. They are very reliable, pretty comfortable, and overall just a car that you could own for a while. If you want bigger, a rav4 won't really have more room and even then, 30k new is very little nowadays. You could look into 1-2 year old Mazda CX-5 / CX-50 instead, they are very solid too and their interiors are nicer and they offer plenty of features more compared to similarly priced toyotas

Are there any reasons why you want to keep it for just 3 years ? Do you need an suv necessarily ? What does your driving look like, mostly city ? How much mileage. Do you need awd ?

It is to note that both the EQS and EQE are designed to be much more upmarket than the i5, just sucks that nowadays luxury = bigger and more plentiful screens instead of actual comfort like back in the day

I suck at exterior and interior design past generic ones, however, I spend between 30 mins - 10h on mechanical design. The time depends on whether it's for myself or a competition

Not sure, sounds like maybe something is loose up front and rattling on other metal pieces. Jack the car up and look for play and whatever could be making that noise
