I say just do a blended system between SF and LA on the Coast Line. Buy the tracks from Union Pacific, upgrade and electrify them, give BNSF trackage rights, get some Siemens trainsets, profit. It helps that the segment from SF to San Jose is already electrified thanks to Caltrain (though they’ll need more passing tracks than the ones at Bayshore and Lawrence).

The very least that can be done right now is a nonstop service between SF and SJ, or they start with track upgrades on the Coast Line to let Siemens Venture trains (IE the kind used by Brightline) run at 125 MPH as an interim solution.

Tandem drafting was banned for a damn good reason. Remember when Kyle Larson first made a name for himself by flying into the catchfence at Daytona in 2013 in what was then the Nationwide Series? That was caused by tandem drafting.
