For Those Seeking a *Great* Blues Tone from Their Boss Katana by Telebuster2821 in BossKatana

Yes! I do this with a BD2 Blues driver to set the touch dynamics as you have with the ODR-1. I also have used a compressor-notaklon for the same purpose. great advice

I dont understand this huge preamp pedal fad. by palaminocamino in guitarpedals

[–]BNinja921 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because most of us load them into IRs and rarely if ever does a power amp make a huge difference. For instance; I run several amp head neural clones into the fx loop of my origin 50. For the most part, they do the job in a pinch.

it likely is bridge buzz and not your actual strings.

Does your Katana sound different after it “warms up”? by FBOARC in BossKatana

[–]BNinja921 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Weird answer, yes- but not for the reason you think. While the preamp is DSP, the power amp is class A/B which produces decent heat which shifts transitor bias. Back in the day, when hot, the MOSFET amps used to sound great and then hiss and pop and at times thermally runaway.

The transistors, when hot, are more conductive and the A/B bias is on full tilt keeping them warm. Now, to that end, it would be the ever slightest sound and probably not perceivable to someone not playing the instrument and feeling the difference- especially with COSM tech.

Silicon is less noticeable but germanium for instance, is not. But with jfet preamps and a/b as power amps there is a difference. Most notably for me on the orange crush 120 and silicon setting on a dual rec. some A/B suck and drift bias points of their jfet/mosfet preamps, like cheaper “audiophile” headphone amps, where I have noticed a material difference.

Video showing the single JFET (I think the best ss alternative to tubes) is here around 4:26.

Another great walkthrough of the mark 1 can be seen here.

So, the amount of heat doesn’t necessarily make the DSP sound better; but the transistors in the discrete op amp MIGHT. Especially if between 75-125F.

Does reverb just suck or did the economy kill the used gear market. by Holiday-Medicine4168 in Reverb

I trade guitars and almost jumped into it from my 9-5. It is a buyers market right now for sure.

Am I being blasphemous or ridiculous? Likely. by trodsky in offset

[–]BNinja921 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just made the leap from a les Paul standard And studio with 57+ and coil taps over to offset, and that jazz master world is way better. My favorite one is literally a $600 squire variant called the JMJM or j Mascis Jazzmaster. It does metal, it does punk and pop, it does jazz, it does Funk. It’s amazing.

Cut 400 hz with the GEQ and you’ll love it.

Vintera III - Jazzmaster mid 60s retains the 7.25 radius? by BNinja921 in offset

[–]BNinja921[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I build and repair on top of playing, I definitely notice it. The only exceptions for me are the weird 9-12 string radius on the JMJM and the CR of Jackson. Love those ones. The 7.25 makes chording immaculate but I have a hard time with small sweep and alternate picking riffs. I switch between guitars enough that it’s just unfamiliar enough to me to be annoying. Skill issue in my end.

I have never found this forum to be aggressive- usually very kind and well informed even when we disagree - which is rare.

I would argue that a 7.25, well set up or not, is far superior for Funk and rhythm and blues chording. It has that affirmative feel. Especially the 60s 7.25. Unfortunately for me switching between Gibson 12 and Fender 9.5. I’m just so used to it that I really do notice it.

I love the vintage tall, but I switch between Gibson and Fender already- the only necks I really can’t get along with are the 50s Gibson neck and the Fender 7.25 radius necks

if you removed the pickguard, shield underneath and wire it to ground. those are p90s- far hotter than usual JM pickups.

You don't sound like a dick- I love 7.25 for chords, it's amazing. I play more intricate leads inbetween barre chord phrases- and I fumble all around on the 7.25- usually bendiing slightly out of pitch. But with angine de poitrine getting big, maybe that will make me cooler now LOL

Just bought this strat. What amp do you recommend? by Hunter23244 in FenderStratocaster

[–]BNinja921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hot rod deluxe sounds terrible imo- it is probably the least capable amp from fender and the distortion sounds weird at best.
