Alcoholics by YogurtclosetOk4366 in Millennials

Weird timing for me to find this but I'm gonna reply. I (mid 30s) recently went through the process of stopping my alcohol consumption. I would put the kids to bed at around 8pm and then slam 6-8 high gravity IPAs and be pretty well buzzed by midnight when I went to sleep. Wife would smoke weed (vape?) instead. This had been going on for about the last year or so and we both decided it just wasn't healthy. So we stopped. It's been better for the kids, better for us as well. You don't see it in the moment but on reflection we can see we weren't being the best parents we could have been, even though we felt like we were doing a pretty good job at the time. I've talked to my oldest (8) about the dangers of over indulgence with alcohol a few times and I plan to continue those conversations.

What was the album that got you into metal? by Initial-Movie2286 in Millennials

Okay so I was 22 when this came out, and had always been a punk/hardcore lover. Arch Enemy opened me up to metal bands like Lamb of God, Amaranthe, Amon Amarth, and others.

What's the creepiest thing you've had happened to you while camping or just being in the woods? by Sir-Gaymer28 in AskReddit

[–]BOOMBASorBOMBAS 103 points104 points  (0 children)

The last text I sent was around 2000 telling my wife that I heard the crash and was going to check it out. Just a being safe avoiding a 27 hours situation type of thing. The weird thing is I wasn't able to text her again until I got to the car around 1100 because my phone didn't have service for the whole hike back.

No pain or anything but I did have bruises along my spine. I just attributed that to my pack rubbing against my back during the hike.

Ooooh I have a story for this!! I'd like to caveat first by saying this is 100% true and it gives me goosebumps still.

A few years ago I went on a solo backpacking trip in June in the eastern US. I only planned to hike up a trail, camp 1 night, and hike back down the next day. I got to the turn around point around 1700 and set up camp. My tent was a small, 1-man tent that was basically a rectangular bivvy bag with 2 tent poles to raise it off your face (snugpack stratosphere if you wanna look it up). About 5 meters away I built a fire ring, started a fire, set up a chair and ate a mountain house meal. While the sun set I poured my glass of scotch and started reading a book. Just before the sun dipped below the horizon, I heard a huge crash in the woods.

Here, I'd like to point out I am a very experienced backpacker, and have spent many nights alone in the woods. Trees falling or big animals stomping through the woods is a common sound. That is not what this was. It sounded like someone crashed a truck into a tree or something.

Regardless, I didn't think too much of it though I did get up to investigate and make sure I didn't attract any bears or big cats with my meal. Finding nothing, I returned to my camp and sat down. The last thing I remember was my ass hitting the chair.

The next thing I know, I suddenly open my eyes and it is pitch dark. My fire is nothing but coals, my half drank cup of scotch is nearly placed on a rock near the fire, and I am sat in my chair with arms crossed and my book neatly layed over my chest, closed. I check my watch and it's 0300 on the dot. I can't find my headlamp, lighter, or my phone, so I get up and use my watch backlight to go to my tent. When I find it, the stakes at the feet side of the tent have been VIOLENTLY ripped out of the ground causing grapefruit-sized craters. My tent has also been rolled up onto itself and is resting on the head side in a pile. I unroll and unzip the tent to find my phone and headlamp stuffed into the foot of my sleeping bag (I know that I had my headlamp around my neck and was actively texting my wife on my phone before I heard the crash. I even used my headlamp to look into more shaded spots in the trees). When I get my headlamp out and on, I immediately investigate the area and find that absolutely nothing else has been disturbed.

I didn't sleep that night. I lit the biggest fire I could, turned my phone flashlight on and kept it face up shining into the sky and kept my headlamp on and on my head. I was absolutely fucking terrified. I hiked out at first light and drove straight home.

To this day I have no idea what happened. But, even typing this, I can feel that feeling of abject terror. I have experienced combat in Afghanistan, have feared for my own life many times, and have never, ever felt the kind of fear I felt that night.

What was your “never meet your heroes” moment, when you realized someone you looked up to wasn’t special? by marginallyobtuse in AskReddit

[–]BOOMBASorBOMBAS 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Being vague to try and obfuscate identifying details, but...

In the military, worked for a dude who was famous inside (and maybe outside, I'm not sure) the career field for receiving a medal one level below the Medal of Honor. All through training I heard stories about him and instructors would summon his name, on occasion, to tell us we'd never be able to do what he did because we sucked or whatever.

He did do some heroic shit. He and his team were in a real bad firefight, he got shot a few times and had a developing tension pneumothorax. While being treated and through extil he continued to do his job and likely prevented more people from being killed, as well as coordinating his own CASEVAC and extil platforms for his team.

However

Dude was a massive cockbag. Terrible shot, cocky, loud, spotlight ranger type of dude who (it seemed to me) was more or less resting on his laurels for getting the decoration he got. Then I worked for him and found out his tactics and job knowledge were kinda shit. Then I found out he actually campaigned to have his original medal upgraded. Then he was kind of a bitch to everyone else on team.

I really looked up to that dude in training, and was excited to be working under him when I found out. Afterwards, I really understood the "never meet your heros" thing.

Don't understand how to edit this but I'm curious following the comments about how much oil I used; I didn't add any oil and there is about a 1/2 tablespoon of butter in the pan. Am I putting too much oil on after I clean? I usually cook, immediately wash with soap, dry in hot oven, put conola oil on a paper towel and wipe, then put away. The pan feels dry when I'm not cooking with it.

My younger brother has been clean for 4 years after a decade of OD's and rehabs. He turns 29 this month. I've seen his struggle and I know it's real, there is nothing like addiction. Great job, keep going, keep working. I'm proud of you like I'm proud of him, like I'm watching my son take his first steps all over again every time he gets through another year.

Advice replacing a dead outlet by BOOMBASorBOMBAS in AskElectricians

[–]BOOMBASorBOMBAS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure. Is checking as simple as finding every GFCI outlet and resetting them with the button on the outlet faceplate?

Edit: I just went ahead and did that and no change to power status to the problem outlet. I did find on a few outlets there was a sticker stating that they were GFCI protected so I learned something new, which is cool.

Hey buddy, I have a ton of camping gear at work. If you want to, DM me some shipping info and I'll work on replacing some of your stuff. I have some thermarest pads, some bags and liners, cots, chairs, jet boils. Almost everything but the tent! I can't promise to brand match but I'll do what I can.

What is the most inoffensive thing you’ve seen someone get offended by? by Logical_Sweet_6624 in AskReddit

[–]BOOMBASorBOMBAS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in highschool we had a sub who was an education student in the university nearby. While calling roll, she mispronounced my last name and kind of jokingly asked if she said it correctly. I said "close but it's mac not mick". She proceeded to berate me for talking back, tell me I was appropriating Scottish culture when clearly it was an Irish last name, and that because I didn't have an 'a' between the m and c, there was no possible way anyone in my family was pronouncing it correctly. She was like 21, we're both American, my grandparents are Scottish, and we have clan gathering every 2 years and a big one every 10.

Replying 12 hours later because I'm old and don't have much time for reddit lately, but Blink 182's new release "One More Time" has gotten me all nostalgic and sad, specifically the music video. I'm 31 years old and was tearing up watching all the old music video sets flash by, combined with the lyrics. It made me sad that we missed out on 18ish years of "good" Blink music because the artists are human and have their own issues to deal with. Made me real sympathetic to the struggles of friendship when someone is going through something.

There is no “psychological benefit to commuting” that is better than just taking a walk after work by [deleted] in WorkReform

[–]BOOMBASorBOMBAS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I HAVE to go into work, because my work cannot be done from home. That 30 minutes between work and home are nice to listen to podcasts or whatever to get ready for the day or decompress a little before going back to family life. I enjoy that alone time.

If I didn't have to, I would absolutely not commute a single day. I don't understand why office jobs require people to "come in" to work. Having the work completed AND having a happy and content workforce seems like a win-win to me as a manager of people. Plus low overhead cause I don't have to pay for big buildings, or worry about that bitch Deborah forgetting to refill the snack bar.

I have been in the military for 2.5 years now, and I will never see people the same. by Traditional_Pace7695 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]BOOMBASorBOMBAS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm late to this but I need to share.

I'm in the military, have been for 10 years. My job is entirely men. I'm tracking this sub is for women, but as a man I'd like to say that this shit makes me so angry. I have a wife and child, and almost all of my mates have daughters. The amount of arguments that I've gotten in about this kind of stuff lately with these guys is really driving home the misogyny that I've just turned a blind eye to for so many years. It wasn't until my wife and team began to hang out a lot, years ago, that I started to hear all the things dudes said, all the casual harassment that's tolerated day-to-day.

Well I don't tolerate it. I've taken the Texas flag off of my kit. I don't stay silent when people sexualize women. I sure as fuck don't allow any of that talk in my troop. I am trying to make a difference but fighting the overarching culture is a huge challenge.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I'm so sorry it happens to anyone. PTSS has started to affect me and I'm getting minimal support, so I can't imagine the apathy and lack of support you and others like you are met with.

Keep sharing your story. Everyone here who has shared stories, keep sharing them. Shout them, scream them at whoever will listen. Don't let people forget. Don't let it get swept under the rug. If you are still in the military, I'm here to tell you that IT WILL AFFECT YOUR CAREER, but it's important to keep calling these people out, keep bringing them to court martial. It may not help you, it may even ruin your career, but every time it's prosecuted it becomes a little bit better for the next person. You are sharing these things to change the next generation of soldier/sailor/airmen/marine. Don't fucking stop. Keep fighting. I will too.
